Parton, Dolly - In The Pines Lyrics

In the pines, in the pines, where the sun never shines
And you shiver when the cold wind blows
My love, my love, what have I done
To make you treat me so
You've caused me to weep, you've caused me to mourn
You've caused me to leave my home

In the pines, in the pines, where the sun never shines
And you shiver when the cold wind blows

The longest train I ever saw
Went down that Georgia Line
The engine passed at six o'clock
The caboose went by at nine

In the pines, in the pines, where the sun never shines
And you shiver when the cold wind blows

I asked my captain for the time of day
He said he throwed his watch away

In the pines, in the pines, where the sun never shines
And you shiver when the cold wind blows
Hoo-hoo, hoo-hoo, hoo-hoo

Parton, Dolly In The Pines Comments

  3. b.... s....

Emisunshine sings this with so much more soul out ways dolly parton anytime

  4. P.... P....

First time I heard this song was when I was watching the coal Miners Daughter.

  5. R.... D....

This song was popular during the 1870s in the Appalachians. Usually it's mixed with another song called The Longest Train. Didn't know Nirvana had done it. So many famous singers have recorded it. I love Dolly singing any song.

    R.... D....

Where did you sleep last night is Nirvana VERSION

  6. G.... C....

This haunting melody had had dozens of verses added to it. It's chilling and sad.

  7. R.... P....

I use to know her back in the 60s.

  8. V.... L....

    enjoyed this ....

  9. A.... D....

I like this version. And I really like the Nirvana version. It's the song that got me into the band. I also like how Dock Walsh, Darby and Tarlton, The Tenneva Ramblers, and Leadbelly sang it. This song can cross genres really well.

    A.... D....

+Audrey Dalton  A horrible effort at faking a Southern accent.  He says, "In the pons.''  Grates on my nerves.

    A.... D....

Lead Belly would have more of a cajun accent which can easily be heard in his music. Nirvana would never be able to duplicate that. All of the versions have some good parts but besides Lead Belly my favorite version would have to be Janel Drewis. It has that haunting feel to it kind of like Lead Belly.

    A.... D....

    I like Loretta Lynn's version.

  10. T.... U....

Just like all Dolly Parton songs, when play at 0.5 speed, they sound killer

  11. r.... d....

one of my favorite versions is that of Long John Baldry. on the album it ain't easy [1971] his is a fantastic rock version. with help on vocals from Rod Stewart and piano from Elton John [when they were poo butts]

  12. S.... ....

There are so many versions of this song because it is an old mountain song from the late 1800's. My great-granny used to sing it to me when I was little. I didn't even know that Nirvana or Dolly had covered it until today to be honest.

  13. f.... ....

    Lead Belly does it best!

  14. J.... M....

if that`s what you think, too bad, dave will never give up on rock and roll, so hate him! Nirvana`s version is way better! Dolly is awesome too, just not on this song!

  15. J.... M....

    nirvana version!!!!!!!

  16. R.... S....

I LOVE Dolly, but the version of this song that really sticks in my mind is the version by the Louvin Brothers. Very possibly because it was the first version I ever heard. It was probably done by the Louvin Brothers before Dolly was even born!
Have I dated myself?? Hell yes!

  17. S.... Y....

    LOVE DOLLY. <3
    LOVE NIRVANA. <3
    LOVE LEADBELLY. <3
    Problem?

  18. O.... B....

    @DeweyDuck420
Kurt was a faggy bitch who did us a service when he gave up music the most permanent way possible.

    O.... B....

    You're a bitch

  19. o.... e....

@DeweyDuck420 This is a traditional American Folk Song. Nirvana did a version and I think Doly Parton is allowed to as well.

  20. e.... ....

ok, just googled nirvana.. sounds like a has been group with a dead drug addict singer...NEXT!!!

  21. e.... ....

Dolly Parton is the most brillant singer and songwriter ever... haters are just jealous

  22. e.... ....

@TheSinReleased who are lead bellies and Nirvana... Never heard of them... but Dolly Parton is a legend and a brillant writer and singer.

  23. R.... C....

would have been nice if they were all in focus

  24. K.... G....

too bad she aged, she was a fuckin milf!!! and she could play guitar!

  25. c.... b....

    God bless Dolly Parton
God curse anyone who doesnt like her

  26. G.... B....

I don't see anything objectionable about this interpretation - it is just another Dolly interpretation and as always, she sounds fine.

  27. T.... M....

this is the Bill Monroe version. Also awesome.

  28. B.... ....

    @shankaboom

Well I think it came out of the Georgian apalachians and I think it may predate the civil war.

  29. y.... ....

a blind man could see that dolly parton is a great singer, songwriter, performer.... ARTIST!!!!

  30. J.... O....

Check out the Peter Roan version w/ the Whoooeeee-whoo-hooo. Outta this world

  31. T.... ....

dolly's voice is beautiful, but really this version is just...um, no...

  32. t.... ....

wow, nirvana's version is pretty different :-) dont take offense everyone, i'm NOT saying it's better, just that it's different!! (of course i do think it's better, but whatevaah...)

  33. a.... ....

@TennesseeNurselady Anyone with a decent taste in music.
Also they're not washed up you tasteless wench

  34. K.... M....

    holy crap this sucks!

    K.... M....

you have no taste and you SUCK..WHY DID YOU TYPE IN DOLLY PARTON IN THE PINES THEN?

  35. P.... B....

does anybody else just kept listening this bad version of where did u sleep lat night cause of this chick boobs?im a sick mf

  36. N.... K....

As has been pointed out by multiple posters below, this song has been covered many times in many ways. My personal favorite is the Louvin brothers, straight bluegrass but with really groundbreaking harmonies. And to all the haters, Dolly & Kurt really like each other's music, they were both true originals. BTW, bluegrass often puts a lift and a step to dark tales. Enjoy!

    N.... K....

Naomi Klayman I Loretta Lynn when she sings this song

  37. b.... ....

Am I wasting my time by pointing out that Dolly really liked Kurt's version?

  38. T.... B....

This reminds me of her + her mum + Dolly cryin i love this song

  39. P.... ....

@TheSinReleased but of coarse but a good job and great song by anyone

  40. W.... ....

Leadbelly did a cover of this song, but he was not the original.. its been around for well over 100 years

  41. R.... M....

Was his head found in a drivers wheel?

  42. G.... ....

Sorry, but this version completely turns the original intent of the song into a sappy singalong. The lyrics are not meant to convey a "waltz with me by the fireside" vibe, but rather an atmosphere of fear and dread. And I DO have respect and enjoy much of Dolly's music, but this is just rubbish.

  43. s.... ....

Leadbelly's was the best because it was the original

  44. B.... ....

    this version sucks

  45. b.... ....

No, My Daddy use to Sing this to Me...
    He's gone...But Mom's still Here!!!

  46. M.... ....

i am from rural iowa and therefore by birth raised listening to country. As a grew I formed my own opinions and grew to love music like nirvana and alice in chains. This rendition, though I prefer the Nirvana version, is a true testiment to the golden times of country when money, possessions, and bodonkadonks don't play any role. Are versions are beautiful in their own right.

  47. D.... ....

Pardon me, but one thing Dolly celebrates is the beauty of creativity - the fact that you can take a song and interpret it millions of different ways. This is also why she is so generous with her songs, as well.
Now, Dolly grew up with this song so this is true to her experience with the song. Kurt's is simply different. Artists are free to reinterpret music. The fact that you are all fighting about it is against Dolly's - and artists' - philosophy in general.

  48. H.... S....

All of yall are retarded. This song is originally by a blues singer named Lead Belly and Dolly does a great job I love country adn Dolly but it's not true to the original at all. Kurt is truer to the original. I like all versions oout there but LEADBELLY's is the best

  49. j.... ....

thank heavens not everyone that covers this shits it up and ruins what it's supposed to be. hah, all of these silly cobain comments. and personal comments about individuals doing it better....if that is true or to be believed, post it and work up as many views.
as rcarroll88 put it......Clowns, you are.

  50. v.... ....

and might I add my mom and I would blow kurt COBAIN outta the water with this song

  51. v.... ....

f u kurt suckssssssss I sang this with my mom when I was young with my mom singing the harmonies kurt the jerk sucks !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  52. v.... ....

    Thats some huge titties! 8:)

  53. Q.... ....

This song was used in the Loretta Lynn bio pic "Coal Miner's Daughter" as sung by Sissy Spacek.

  54. M.... ....

Not a country fan, but Dolly has an amazing voice and does this classic song great justice.

People who argue about Leadbelly and Nirvana and whoever miss the beauty of this version and it is their loss.

But what are you going to do?

    M.... ....

Dolly is great, but so was Kurt, two things can be true. Ive always respected Dolly as an amazing songwriter. Stop hating

  55. A.... ....

its a folk song of unknown origin from the late 1800's>
Ledbetter did the first known recording of it.

  56. P.... I....

This is a Huddie "Leadbelly" Ledbetter song from the early 1900s. This has probably been stated in previous posts.

  57. m.... ....

Did Dolly steal the Nirvana lyrics or what? Maybe Dolly is actually Courtney...hmmm?

  58. K.... ....

I am challenging you to prove Marlene Dietrich performed Puff the Magic Dragon in 1939. She performed it in the 60s along with Where have all the Flowers Gone. Pete Yarrow co-wrote Puff. Pete Seeger wrote Flowers. They were the original artists to perform them.

  59. K.... ....

5 artists did Corinne Corinna? Way more than 5. Probably been more than 5 in the last year alone.

  60. N.... F....

Hey stupid!! people sing songs differently....

  61. K.... ....

Why do people think Nirvana owns this song? Many artists have done it between the time Leadbelly recorded it until Cobain did his version. Cobain copied Mark Lanegan's. Dylan also does it. I do my own version with my own verse thrown in. Maybe I should post it and everyone will agree it is the worst version of all and stop bickering. Anyway, this is a perfectly good version. Dolly's been singing for how long now?

  62. s.... ....

    This song have 3 names:
    "in the pines",
"where did you sleep last night" or,
    "black girl"

This song is a traditional American folk song which dates back to at least the 1870s, and is believed to be Southern Appalachian in origin. The identity of the song's author is unknown, but it has been recorded by dozens of artists in numerous genres.

The most famous is the cover of Nirvana.

This version is just the half, is longer than that

Nirvana's version is almost all the song

    s.... ....

I've also seen it titled as 'Hey Girl' (Norma Tanega's recording of it)...

    s.... ....

I always figured it was a leadbelly song because I’ve never found an older version

  63. B.... S....

There are many, many versions of this song. All are valid . Dolly's is true to the earlier Bill Monroe version. listen to Leadbelly version and John Baldry's also. They are all great.

  64. D.... ....

you have no taste in music, listen to nirvana's version

  65. l.... ....

she's got 2 big things going 4 her

  66. t.... ....

    Why all the cussing.... :(

  67. s.... ....

    Bravo Dolly!

  68. a.... ....

I will forever think of her as the girl from "The Planet of the Enormous Hooters" Where she was treated like a second class citizen for having small boobs (Saturday Night Live)

  69. J.... C....

    hahahaha

  70. M.... O....

not her best--such a plodding procuction.

  71. S.... W....

I'm just guessing jake, but I don't think she'd ever let you get close enough. Dolly's a class act...she should be treated with respect.

  72. G.... C....

    Leadbelly would be proud

  73. d.... ....

    We all suck...

  74. l.... ....

I think Leadbelly might have liked this...well, he would have found a couple of things to appreciate about Dolly anyway

  75. M.... S....

This is a great rendition of an old time song!

  76. t.... ....

    I like song....:)

  77. H.... J....

Great song. Thanks for posting! Love the pictures too.

  78. J.... H....

Love the song, love the vid, love Dolly
