Parsons, Gram - November Nights Lyrics

You say that you're restless, you say that you know me too well
You've seen all my best and you've heard all the stories I tell
You think you've been taken for granted, you're probably right

Still I remember a November night
When the dawn on your doorway shone white with frost
And the soft love that always began with the touch of your hand
And recall the mornings that tossed your hair in the wind

Time's made it meaningless, I'm insecure, you can tell
But why am I leaving unless time had only meant well?
There's nothing left now to excite you, no reason to try

Still I remember a candlelit sky
And the summer surrounding the ground where you and I lay
And though we were always alone with our secrets known
We both were aware and afraid our closeness might end

My love's like a dancer, she weaves through the dangers complete
Her well rehearsed answers with rational reasons for feet
And if it decreases or ceases to always seem right

I'll just remember a November night
When the dawn on your doorway shone white with frost
And the soft love that always began with the touch of your hand
And recall the mornings that tossed your hair in the wind

    chords? anyone?
    amazing music really

    C.... d....

Sorry, Carlos, for responding so late with this. The guitar is in standard tuning with a capo at the 4th fret. (This is a must to play it properly and give the chords the correct tone and "ring."

Once you have that set-up, the opening chord is a "D" shape with pinky finger adding the 5th fret, first string, then the 3rd fret, first string, then a "D" without the pinky extensions. Next chord is a "C" shape, with the pinky extending to the 3rd fret first string and then the 3rd fret 2nd string. Next is "G," (folkie-style, using 2nd, 3rd and 4th fingers) with Gram changing the fingering on the 5th string: from frets 2 to 3 then reversing and finally playing the 5th string open before playing a normal "G."

During the verses, he plays with the "D" chord by occasionally removing his middle finger from the first string. When Gram sings, "You're probably right..." he plays a standard "D" shape, changing the time signature to 3/4, but adds his thumb first to the 6th string, 3rd fret, then the "D" with thumb over both the 5th and 6th strings at the 2nd fret, and finally a "D" shape with his thumb over the 6th string 2nd fret. Many of the figures I laid out are then repeated until he sings, "by the touch of your hand..." That chord there is a "Cmin" barre chord in the 3rd fret position. Then he returns to G, D, C, G shapes. When he sings "No reason to try" in the middle of the song, he clearly plays first a "C" shape, then alters it slightly by bringing the ring finger to the 2nd fret of the 5th string.

Everything above is used again in various combinations through the rest of the song, alternating between 3/4 and 4/4 time. He then closes the song with 3 chords for the coda, a standard "G" shape (This must be played without the index finger, folkie style), followed by a chord that, from 6th string to 1st, is played thus: 6th: 3 / 5th: 0 / 4th: 2 / 3rd: 0 / 2nd: 1 / 1st: 3, then ending with "G."

If you go through everything I wrote, it is exactly the way Gram plays it. For real precision, listen to all the subtle variations of the above and you see that he was quite an accomplished Folk guitarist very early on. Fantastic Gram demo! He truly was destined for greatness...
