Parsons, Gram - Drug Store Truck Drivin' Man Lyrics

He's a drug store truck drivin' man
He's the head of the Ku Klux Klan
When summer rolls around
He'll be lucky if he's not in town

Well, he's got him a house on the hill
He plays country records till you've had your fill
He's a fireman's friend he's an all night DJ
But he sure does think different from the records he plays

He's a drug store truck drivin' man
He's the head of the Ku Klux Klan
When summer rolls around
He'll be lucky if he's not in town

Well, he don't like the young folks I know
He told me one night on his radio show
He's got him a medal he won in the War
It weighs five-hundred pounds and it sleeps on his floor

He's a drug store truck drivin' man
He's the head of the Ku Klux Klan
When summer rolls around
He'll be lucky if he's not in town

He's been like a father to me
He's the only DJ you can hear after three
I'm an all night musician in a rock and roll band
And why he don't like me I can't understand

He's a drug store truck drivin' man
He's the head of the Ku Klux Klan
When summer rolls around
He'll be lucky if he's not in town
When summer rolls around
He'll be lucky if he's not in town

Anyone know what the line means "he's got him a medal he won in the war weighs 500 pounds and sleeps on the floor"?

"he's got him a medal that he won in the war / weighs 500 pounds and it sleeps by the door " -- all entitled to their own interpretation -- for me it is simply the remembrances of two tours of duty in Vietnam --- good/bad/indifferent -- my faithful companion

Gram Parsons was only 26 years old when his life ended at Joshua Tree. He, born in November '46, Emmylou Harris was the same age, born just five months later in April '47. Hard to believe it's now been more than 45 years and Emmylou will soon be 72.

Parsons, that funny, talented, charismatic, musical genius as#hole blew a hole in the heart of the gentle, sweet beauty with his reckless behavior that has added a sorrowful dimension to her life and music ever since. The very definition of feminine beauty and elegance for the baby boomer generation was reflected in whatever Emmylou happened to look like at any particular moment in time.

This song captured the lightheartedness of her life before the loss of Gram Parsons. "Boulder to Birmingham" shares the tragedy and rawness of the loss of Parsons and the course of her life thereafter. Her great gift to us and highest tribute to Parsons' memory was that she carried on in his absence.

Thank you Miss Emmylou. What a legacy you have given us! 02.16.19

Barreltapper, methinks thou paintest with a strange, broad brush.....American soldiers are sorely underpaid for
what's often a righteous fight. Real killers find way more profitable ways to perform their dastardly deeds...
Sorry, just gotta call you out on your obnoxious ignorance. Just dig the beautiful music, dude:)

I was under the impression that this song was a critique of Ronald Reagan, during his term as Governor of California. His treatment of the returning Veterans was no different from that of Obama's, apart that is from the fact that in Vietnam it was a conscripted Army, youngsters were given no choice, unlike now when all the uniformed killers are in it for the salary, whether with a real army or with Blackwater, it makes no difference to them. Sometimes you can't pin all the blame on Politicians, who love Professional soldiers until they need help that is.

    b.... ....

+wavygr Well thanks for that. I've listened to this track dozens of times and I could never figure out what the connection with Reagan was. It was something that I heard somewhere and just accepted. It was probably a know all Hippie who mislead me.

    b.... ....

+barreltapper At Woodstock Joan Baez said something like here is a song about the governor of California Ronald Reagen Zap. This is where the Reagen story came from. If you look other things up you will see it was the Republican House who refused to pass bills to help veterans but i don't want to fight about politics. I was in USAF during the Vietnam war.

  22. S.... A....

I love it ,, just great, now this is country music

  23. b.... ....

BBellew3 - No offense, man, but I don't think that's it.  I'm a Vietnam Era vet and I know a lot of guys who just can't let go of the war.  There's some like John Kerry who threw their medals away, and others who parade them around like they're more significant now than when they got them.  I think Gram was saying that this guy is in the latter group:  his medal has taken on a life of its own and follows him around like a faithful dog.  Some guys who never even served are obsessed with the whole period and the searing emotions that it raised.  Some wear fatigues or field jackets that they bought in a surplus store and live on the streets using drugs.  Pathetic.

    b.... ....

exactly, thank you for clarifying, I don't know what BBellew3 is smoking...

    b.... ....

IMO the worst are the ones who are the first to shed crocodile tears and proclaim how much they appreciate "the service you gave to the country". Many of those people never served or dodged the draft (I'm talking about Vietnam-era) by hooking up in a reserve unit. Hell awaits them.

  24. B.... ....

Wavgr -- love that line and always wondered myself.  "He won him a medal he won in the war.  Weighs 500 pounds"   -- obviously talking about a war veteran who won a medal for duty in combat and whatever he did to in combat to win that medal was horrific and the memory of it will be with him forever.

"and it sleeps on his floor" -- I'm guessing that it means the mental scars of carrying that war memory has turned him into an alcoholic or junkie that needs to use heavily just so he can pass out to get sleep.

    B.... ....

+BBellew3 I don't think Ralph Emery was ever in combat.

    B.... ....

+wavygr Remember that scene in "The Deerhunter"? Where DeNiro comes home; and, at some point in time; sinks to the floor holding the place he was injured? Thats the 500 lb medal.....

    B.... ....

    @SPOTLIGHTONE
I still don't get it song was written way before movie.

  25. w.... ....

Anyone know what line means? He's got him a medal he won in the war weighs 500 pounds and it sleeps on the floor?

    w.... ....

I think it's the weight of war. Also known as shellshock and post traumatic stress disorder.

    w.... ....

Baloney. It's in reference to Ralph Emery's ego.

  26. d.... b....

Gram was a genius and my passion in music, discovered him late in life and never looked back......

  27. H.... ....

it dont get any better than this,, how does 90 percent of people never heard of gram parsons? just great listen to that pedal steel
