Parsons, Gram - Cash On The Barrelhead Lyrics

Alright
Oh, yeah

Got in a little trouble down at the county seat
Lord, they put me in the jailhouse for loafing on the street
When the judge read the verdict, I was a guilty man
Said forty-five dollars or forty days in the can

Said, that'll be cash on the barrelhead, son
You can take your choice if you're twenty-one
No money down, no credit plan
No time to chase you, 'cause I'm a busy man

Forty days in the jailhouse, four days on the road
I was feeling mighty hungry, my feet a heavy load
Saw a Greyhound coming, stuck out my thumb
Before I got to my seat, the driver caught my arm

Said, that'll be cash on the barrelhead, son
This old gray dog gets paid to run
When the engine starts and the wheels won't roll
Give me cash on the barrelhead, I'll take you down the road

Said, that'll be cash on the barrelhead, son
You can take your choice if you're twenty-one
No money down, no credit plan
No time to chase you, 'cause I'm a busy man
No time to chase you, 'cause I'm a busy man

Parsons, Gram Cash On The Barrelhead Comments
  1. T.... H....

    He was good looking

  2. P.... V....

    is this recording from altamont?

    P.... V....

No, it's later, during Gram's solo career with Emmylou Harris.

  3. D.... V....

Gram would have been so proud of the response the 50th anniversary tour of "The Sweetheart of the Rodeo" album received last year. They were booed off the Opry in 1968, but now folks get it and appreciate it for the great album it is!

  4. d.... ....

God Bless Gram!!! All others...cash on the barrel head!

  5. E.... L....

This is awesome GP in concert and the audience is pumped.. hearing the glass smash in between songs makes me chuckle.. what is this?? The Blues Brothers Rhythm and Blues Review and Rawhide?? ha ha

    E.... L....

it isn't really recorded live..it was done in a studio

    E.... L....

@inertia27 interesting.. didn't know that.. thought it was live

  6. C.... V....

I remember meeting him and Emmy lou. Genuine folk

  7. J.... G....

Them Louvin brothers could sure write some songs, Charlie is still around, I heard his new album, something like "Death ballads and disaster songs". You know comedy stuff. Pretty damn good.

    J.... G....

Hickory Wind is a Gram Parsons original, although there is some controversy about that.

    County Seat

    r.... s....

    County seat

  21. H.... C....

    sure could sing 💗🙌

  22. R.... R....

    Nothing like it ever!!

  23. N.... ....

What a wonderful album. These "live" tunes were completely constructed in the studio, with overdubs, etc.

    N.... ....

Yup, the bottle clank was the giveaway. Such crisp vocal and instruments with a crowd perfectly recorded, possible maybe, but clearly unlikely.

  24. 3.... 2....

This is the best version of this tune, all others are inferior. The band is hot, the groove is right, the tempo is perfect, and it kicks ass.

    3.... 2....

Gram Parsons would say "Wrong, the best version is the original by the Louvin Brothers"

    3.... 2....

One for both of you - JD Crowe’s version with Keith Whitley doing Gram

  25. P.... S....

    Pure awesomeness.

  26. J.... M....

    Hickory Wind is just precious!

    J.... M....

to the nines*..makes me feel better?

  27. y.... ....

i was barreling through northern Quebec in the middle of the night, and the AM broadcasted

Fermez les honkytonks! Fermez les portes!

And i almost wrecked the car. Gram is beloved en quebecoise!

  28. r.... ....

    And there's Emmylou singing backing.

  29. T.... L....

Louvin Grams Version of this one

    T.... L....

Louvin' the memories and the comment. Twenty thousand roads...🍻🎻♩🌳

  30. J.... H....

    Freakin' awesome!

  31. s.... ....

I have this album. I have no idea why i bought it way back in the 70's. I fell in love with it and went on my way listening to everyother type of music. Now, at the ripe ol age of 55...i love country...gee, i wonder why? lol

  32. M.... P....

the crowd noises were Gram's idea to simulate that live concert feel. Hickory Wind is unparalleled, thanks for posting!

    M.... P....

Mishy Park wow. I always thought this was live. thanks for the info.

    M.... P....

He was one brilliant guy. Just ask Emmy.

  33. D.... G....

A song/medley that makes me laugh and cry at the same time...when I first heard it (on a collection compiled by Elvis Costello) the liner notes said that the rapturous crowd noises were a dig at Gram's lack of commercial success. Then Hickory Wind just tears your heart out, even with the fake "down home" crowd whooping it up in the background (which is still hilarious). Happy Valentines Day Gram, wherever you are.

  34. H.... ....

real country people didnt except this back then well what would they think of the so called country today its complete garbage,,, gram was country and one of the best at it dont think i heard a better country song than hickory wind

  35. G.... "....

    RIP GRAM!

    G.... "....

  36. R.... ....

A masterpiece without comparison. Thank you Musicnessy.
