Pam Tillis - Maybe It Was Memphis Lyrics

Looking at you through a misty moonlight,
Katydid sing like a symphony.
Porch swing swaying like a Tennessee lullaby,
Melody blowing through the willow tree.

What was I s'posed to do,
Standing there looking at you?
Lonely boy far from home...

Maybe it was Memphis,
Maybe it was southern summer nights.
Maybe it was you, maybe it was me,
But it sure felt right.

Read about you in a Faulkner novel,
Met you once in a Williams' play.
Heard about you in a country love song,
Summer night beauty took my breath away.

What was I s'posed to do,
Standing there looking at you?
Lonely boy far from home.

Maybe it was Memphis,
Maybe it was southern summer nights.
Maybe it was you, maybe it was me,
But it sure felt right.

Maybe it was Memphis,
Maybe it was southern summer nights.
Maybe it was you, maybe it was me,
But it sure felt right.

Every night now since I been back home,
I lie awake drifting in my memory.
Think about you on your mama's front porch swing
Talking that way, so soft to me.

What was I s'posed to do,
Standing there looking at you?
Lonely boy far from home

Maybe it was Memphis,
Maybe it was southern summer nights.
Maybe it was you, maybe it was me,
But it sure felt right.

I was at work recently and my buddy is telling me about his new house on a secluded lake in mid Florida. He say's "Oh yeah my new place is great. My neighbors are all great. Do you know who Pam Tillis is? She's my neighbor. Sometimes she sings outside and you can hear her." I'm jealous.

They had such a great diversity of female country singers in the 90s. I can't name 5 good ones today. Carrie Underwood, Miranda Lambert and who else

  57. J.... W....

and maybe it wasn't anything but a great melody.

  58. R.... W....

Takes me back a lot of years to a chance encounter in Memphis when I was a lonely boy far from home.. Gotta love the references to Falkner and Tennessee Williams. Quintisentially southern.

    R.... W....

Thinking about the south now just makes me sad, knowing that all the women down there are sleeping with negroes. And the men are too broken to stand up and take them back. RIP DIXIE. I left after Katrina, doubt I'll ever be back.

    R.... W....

Good Lord, dude! I think we in the southland will survive somehow without your racist attitudes. I am proud of the progress we have made in my lifetime, though much remains to be done. I hope you come to understand and experience brotherhood in your life.

    R.... W....

@Rusty Williamson I'm just being honest rusty, there's nothing racist about honesty. I hope that you find a product that will decalcify your pineal gland so that you can see clearly through your great deception and see the world for what it really is.

  59. B.... L....

Love this country and it's music.

  60. J.... A....

Think something just clicked for me. The lines "lonely boy so far from home" and "standing on your moma's front porch" always confused me. How can you be far from home on your moma's porch. I know that the song Rodeo (Garth Brooks) was written from the perspective of the woman, and was originally sung by female artists. Is this one from the perspective of the man? Like, when it says "a lonely boy so far from home" is the "narrator" saying that /they/ are a lonely boy far from home standing there looking at the "subject" of the song? I mean, from that reading of the lyrics "summer night beauty" could be a reference either to the beauty of a Memphis summer night or a reference to the person being sung about. Or am I missing something else here?

  61. a.... j....

One of the all time great songs, a masterpiece , just listen to the guitar solo and of course the lovely singing by the legendary Pam Tillis, absolutely love this American classic

When I was 12 years old in 1992 my family for short time Live in Central Texas. Radio didn't have much other than country music and I wasn't the biggest country fan back then. One night this song came on the radio while I sat by myself in the car oh, and I fell in love with it.
