Palmer, Amanda - Mother Lyrics

Mother, do you think they'll drop the bomb?
Mother, do you think they'll like this song?
Mother, do you think they'll try to break my balls?
Ooh ah
Mother, should I build the wall?
Mother, should I run for president?
Mother, should I trust the government?
Mother, will they put me in the firing line?
Ooh, ah, is it just a waste of time?

Hush now baby, baby, don't you cry
Mamma's gonna make all of your nightmares come true
Mamma's gonna put all of her fears into you
Mamma's gonna keep you right here, under her wing
She won't let you fly, but she might let you sing
Mamma's gonna keep baby cosy and warm
Oooh babe, oooh babe, oooh babe
Of course Mamma's gonna help build the wall

Mother, do you think she's good enough, for me?
Mother, do you think she's dangerous, to me?
Mother, will she tear your little boy apart?
Ooh ah
Mother, will she break my heart?

Hush now baby, baby, don't you cry
Mamma's going to check out all your girlfriends for you
Mamma won't let anyone dirty get through
Mamma's gonna wait up until you get in
Mamma will always find out where you've been
Mamma's gonna keep baby healthy and clean
Oooh babe, oooh babe, oooh baby
You'll always be baby to me

Mother, did it need to be so high?

Palmer, Amanda Mother Comments
  1. Senior Zolo

Mother do you think they'll try to break my balls? Mother....should I build the wall?

    Senior Zolo

I had no idea this vid would ape my predilection.

  2. Guitalele Oeuvre

Trump said the other day his tremendous wall is being built in Colorado! (THAT should teach them damn NEW Mexicans from being new!) /s lol!

  3. Christopher Turner

Why do I hope they all live together in a utopian farm colony, exploring the farthest reaches of emotion and art? If I am right, where do I join?

  4. Barfy Fox

How timely! And appropriate! Love the strings arrangement. Thank you Zoe Keating for a beautiful performance of one of my favorite David Gilmour guitar solos.

  5. Brian Bouchard

Sinead O'Connor did it way better and less pretentious.

  6. CountOrlok22

This was so unexpected. As both a Pink Floyd and Amanda Palmer fan, I wouldn't have guessed what this would be like, but it's beautiful.

  7. Travis Gardner

I see people in the comments say that the video says we should be more understanding of the administration, but I feel like it means more to jest at them.

Like its saying that the actions are more childlike rather than the cold adittude that it looks like on the surface.

I still don't think a person doing bad by being childlike should draw sympathy.

  8. kevin mcmonagle

yay know, for as much as I love Amanda and what she does...I just remembered she was the first person to raise > $1M on Kickstart. and what did she do with the funds? She commissioned artist after artist to paint her portrait or a portrait based on her songs. Artists including the likes of Fairy Shepard, etc. Took it on tour. Imagine all the people that could have been helped by her raising $1M on GoFundMe or whichever it was. Instead, she built a Wall to idolize her which was erected in the shadow of her own ego. Looking back, it's a hard pill to swallow now. Make good Amanda.

  9. Tayez Kelyana

Ruined a perfectly great song, what a stupid video . a bit too artsy fartsy

  10. hookybricks hooky

„Mother“ becomes more and more Amanda’s song. Sorry Roger.

  11. Silly Green Fairy

Gross. She is so full of herself.

    L. Alexandra

How? Be specific instead of vague and spiteful. The only people I see full of themselves between the video and the comments are those who are criticizing her without substance and calling herself important without example or actually understanding what went into the creation of this. Commenting on a video when you dislike someone after watching it knowing that you dislike them is about as egotistical and pretentious as it gets while also being mean-spirited.

  15. Kelso Pendragon

Ugh.. I like the cover and song, but this video is dumb.

    Chauncey Slánský-Dubček

    It's about Israel

    Silly Green Fairy

Chauncey Slánský-Dubček knowing that doesn't make it better...

  16. MonkeyDS

5:12 That guy is really enjoying the show lol

  17. Helterz Skelterz

    Is that Melissa?

  18. Ronald Florio

    Opus 40 saugerties ny

  19. Mal Hultgren

    It gooesebumped me to death

  20. klaatu baradaNIKTO

this is so full of peace and love. that's what we really need - - had our dumbass of a president and others in power been brought up to see things differently, perhaps had a mother or motherly (as in compassionate) force to show them true empathy and consideration, things wouldn't be so bad. this hits home HARD. <3 love you amanda

  21. Hestia Deanne

Opus 40, what a Great Place!

  22. Who AreYou

I adore this so much. But the cello...just fantastic <3 <3

  23. Swamp Lady

Never has a piece of art moved me to create more than this. Thank you

  24. David Mitchell

Holy goodness I am a huge Floyd fan and thought it would be another cover I would click off of after 10 seconds, after my third time watching this all I know that is left to say is it is truly captivating. I can't explain it other than it grabs every sense of the spirit from beginning to end WOW! great cover.

  25. fremenchips

You do realize that the mother character in the Wall is suppose to be a smothering over protective nanny. Not exactly an apt metaphor for the Trump administration. Swing and a miss.

Yeah, Trump is more the neglectful kind of bastard.

    Marylyn T.

You do realize that she covered this with their approval and she on purpose flipped the meaning of this because-artistic interpretation. It's really a thing, look it up.

    Chris Bryan

this is (as far as i've seen) the only worthwhile comment on this video, thank you!!!

    Barfy Fox

Artistic interpretation is absolutely correct Marylyn T. And wasn't Mother his actual Mother, not his nanny? If there's a swing and a miss, fremenchips, it is your comment😊

    Sandy T

The mother referred to in the original version was Pink’s actual mother. Roger Water’s wrote it loosely based on his own mother who became very protective of him after his father was killed in World War 2. In the future, please make sure you do your research before you comment. When you make a critical comment but get key facts wrong, it makes you look not so very bright.

  26. Dumbo

Thank you so much, truly. You have inspired me since my formative years. You inspire me to realize so many things. You bring me to a point at which I am aware of the struggle of human life. Thank you. You have always been such an inspiration to me, sometimes so strongly that I turn away. When I come back I realize the importance of your mission and emotion. Thank you.

  31. TheCheesecakedeath

    Melissa auf der maur <3

  32. It's me

So intricate, love you and appreciate you Amanda

  33. pekolucky

Courageous, compassionate, reminds us who we truly are.

  34. xFlloyd

I profoundly dislike this. Ugh, she is soooooo self important, self indulgent and pretentious. The original song, and other covers of it are great. This one is garbage.

Pssst... Roger Waters hates Trump too,. You should probably return your Pink Floyd fan club membership card.

    Mi Amore

you obviously don't have any appreciation for good taste and art in music. id like to see your cover of this song.

With a heavy heart, I have to agree with you. I found it cringeworthy and definitely attention seeking.

    Raven Devino

legitreviews1 Would you prefer art that doesn't draw attention? I feel that wouldn't be interesting.

    Silly Green Fairy

I love the dresden dolls, what the fuck is this.
Expected so much better when i sought out this video

  35. Tim Judd

    Thanks kiddo!

  36. Bob Bobson

This song reminds me of trump.

  37. Jan Deelstra

    LOVE THIS. Brilliant.

  38. Pálma Szücs

Does anyone know what kind of flower is in her hair?

  39. Rev SeaWind

Goddammit, you've gone and hit me square in the feels. Just pure emotion in this! Please, Amanda Fucking Palmer, don't ever change!

  40. Justin Long

    Honest cover.

  41. Wizz Da Burrito Boy

What I take from this is that trump and his colleagues were not born evil. They were groomed to be by their parents due to an entire lack of neutering and love.

    Josh Reed

I might even go as far as saying most of society its programmed like that.

@Josh Reed exactly, we build these walls, first in our head, then in reality

I think you meant “nurturing,” but “neutering” would have been good too. 😂

  42. Richard Wyant

Avant-garde MTV, entertainment, money, nothing new here

    Bryan David

    Richard Wyant
Best cover A.P. has covered to date. Met her and saw her perform, "Who Killed Amanda Palmer" Good show, but the juxtaposition of the strings to her hunting voice in this track. It takes my breath away.

  43. Gnilrats

Once again, Amanda has left me profoundly moved. I'm still trying to process... And Jherek... an amazing arrangement as always.

  44. Mark Felps

At turns beautiful, desperate, compassionate, and heartbreaking. Thank you.

  45. MySerpentine

Thank you Neil Gaiman for posting this on your facebook. There will be no walls in my heart, for I do pity them.

  46. Eliott Moore

This is amazing and beautiful and you are amazing and beautiful!! I love it 💕

  47. Jack Sanders Jr

    Beautifully Done!!

  48. msjacksonnm

One of my favorite songs of all time rendered more powerful than ever before. Whispered gently and intentionally, building up to the moment we can all break down together as the music builds and remember our collective humanity. Everything about this is magic. THANK YOU for reminding me that each and every human being needs compassion.

  49. BirdsFlyingHigh

This is incredibly beautiful, Thank You for your Art, your Music, your Compassion

  50. Jani Taylor

Wow! Love it! The ending caught me off guard, but it carries a great message.

  51. David Faux

    Wonderful!! Bravo! Bravo!! ^_^

  52. Awkward Gay

crazy how a song released in 1979 can be so on point for what todays world is.. Amanda AND Jherek as always have created something of such beauty and compassion.

    Krzysztof Rumanowski

In my opinion it shows a genius of Roger Waters who wrote this lyrics.

    Awkward Gay

For sure! Although the original never quite captivated me like this version. But i may be biased

  53. Peter Austin

Great interpretation of the song and the film clip is amazing!
I think you should record something with Jonsi from Sigur Ros.

  54. Rani Piece

Thank you for this beautiful piece. And thank you for continuing to inspire. ❤️

  55. Jon Pressick

A piece of art as beautiful as it is important. These words and notes can change the world if we listen.

  56. Stacy Litwin

Lovely rendition, powerful video, wonderful job AFP

  57. Cassandra Bunk

Even as a long time fan I didn’t get it at first, but when I did, it hit me like a ton of bricks. Compassion for the current administration is not something I am sure I am capable of, and this video brought me to tears.

To be fair, being the baby of the Mother in that song is kind of a horrible fate.

    Barfy Fox

"Ton of bricks." Pun intended, or no?

  58. Jen Zaiger

Amanda Palmer you brilliant goddess!! Absolutely genius visual! ❤️❤️❤️❤️

  59. hodgybuttafuko

This is thought provoking and intensely beautiful. I’m overcome with joy at the appearance of MADM. This is just a perfect reworking of an already great song. And also, boobs.

  60. Deborah Karfs

Art shows us who we are and who we can be. Thank you, AFP, for reminding us compassion is truly the way forward.

  61. allie mcdonald

Art at its finest. Maybe Trump just needs some mother fucking love. Don't we all.

  62. Svetlana

This video is so important. I'm really trying to be more compassionate instead of just angry, and it's so hard... Thank you for this message.

I'd pity them and slit their throats. The two reactions aren't incompatible.

  63. Susan Kelly

Absolutely adore this amazing piece of work , stunning , visually, musically, spiritually, politically.
    Thank you Amanda 💖

  64. Kelli McGee

I love this video so very much, even how jarring of a message it is. It's so easy to be consumed with hate and anger. But to love someone like a mother? It's powerful.
