Palmer, Amanda - In Harm's Way Lyrics

What I cannot see cannot be not untrue
Standing on the barrier of me and you are
Standing where the ocean meets the sand
We cross though we barely understand
The grass is always greener on the land

What we cannot say cannot be not our fault
Searching for a harbor where the sharks don't call
I'm waiting where the boats arrive at night
I see the ones before me disappearing into light

Why would you go when you could stay?
Why would you try when you could walk away?
Why should I care when you're not mine?
Why would I care when you're not even my kind?
Why would you stand when you could lie?
Why would you bother to find something kind to say?
Why would you bother to love your own neighbor?
And why would you bother to love your own brother?
And love's so expensive these days

What I cannot do cannot be not undone
Blinking at the reef collapsing in the sunrise
Shining from this pamphlet in my hand
We cross as many fingers as we can
The grass keeps looking grayer as we find no place to land

What I cannot see cannot be not unseen
Standing on the barrier of you and me
Are standing where the ocean meets the land
We cross even though we understand
We cross even though we see the child in the sand

Why would you go when you could stay?
Why would you try when you could pass away?
Why would I care when you're not mine?
Why would I care when you're not even my kind?
Why would you stand when you could lie?
Why would you bother to find something kind to say?
Why would you bother to save your own neighbor?
And why would you bother to save your own brother?

Why would you bother to save your own child?
Why would you bother with all of this bother?
And why would you bother with all of these others?
When there's always you you could save….
Why, what are you crazy?
Why would you stand in harm's way?

Palmer, Amanda In Harm's Way Comments
  1. Muhammed Yaseen

Yo Amanda.. came from your Ted talk.. really moved me.

Like literally too; from my couch! To stand up and applause! Lol

    Pubudu Senarathne

    Me too man. Me too

  2. Ana Larson

I believe God tests us in many ways, when a hurricane destroyed our valley, what you saw was humanity stopping no matter their social status and reaching out and being neighbors. How do we help our neighbor, when we do it for the least of them we do it for the love of God, real love. Amazing song.

Off topic a bit but feeling so hopelessly I am asking for help :
I'm sure I had the song 'Creepy Doll' on 'An Evening With Amanda Palmer and Neil Gaiman', listened to it zillion times and then it vanished from the album eg. downloaded from Apple Music. Anyone can help me to track it as a mp3 not a You Tube one?

  16. Ellen B

That poor baby. If only he didn't require this beautiful song. :(

So much bad news flies at us all day, each day, it's can be hard to remember every story that broke your heart, right before you shifted gears and plunged back into your own microcosm. It's human nature to protect our hearts from breaking. Immersion in sorrow isn't healthy, either. But at some point, "taking a break," is just choosing not to care.

Thank you for reminding people to care.

  17. Anika L Ahmed

    Sigh
    This is just gorgeous

I wonder when the Amanda Palmer song for all the victims of Islamic terror, or those 1400 girls raped in the UK will come out. No let’s ignore why people have a problem refugees. Couldn’t have anything to do with the fact that they’re all Muslims and Muslims have proven to be a bad thing for civilisation. How do you reconcile the heinous views of many of those refugees (on homosexuality, women’s right, apostasy etc) with your desire to force them on the citizens of your country.

    Pablo Kühne

I'm sorry, this is just fucking tasteless.
Do you not understand that regardless of what someone may believe they are still human beings? Or do you think it's just fine and dandy to let children die because of something that their parents may or may not believe? Syrian and Iraqi refugees are fleeing Islamic terror, not supporting it, and it's really fucking sad there are cunts like you that cannot see the plight of fellow humans with some sorry of empathy.

    KORI G

Pablo you're so right ! Fortunately he's the only one to publish this kind of comment full of hate, and all those beautiful words on this page as well as Amanda's song warm my heart.

    DIRTBIKER SWE

@Pablo Kühne Then fight the islam, instead fleeing from it. We fought againist communism and nazism in our europe and we won. You can do same againist islam. Also 80% of refugee seeking asylum in my country was adult men, only 20% was women and children. If only women and children seeking asylum it would be no problem for me at all, so all murders, gangrapes and robbery will drop to ZERO. We dont want men who commit crimes here.

  20. dan_minighiti

    Omg so beautiful

  21. Smirking CowGirl From Highgarden

Video about refugees... Refugee runs over innocent bikers and yells Allah Akbar. Nice video though.

    Kittin The Creator

Actually the recent Car Terrorist attacks were by white men, Not refugee's

    KORI G

You're right Kittin, Thanks to tell it ! And ALL the recent terrorist attacks in Europe where by peoples born in Europe (France, UK, Belgium)..

    Sylvia Benoit

Like the cadian french guy in Quebec who shot a bunch of people at a mosque and in jail said...they are setting up funds for the victims but my parents will get nothing.

  22. David Griffiths

incredibly powerful song, such a majestically beautiful video

I was thinking about Aylan Kurdi just last week. I thought, "I wonder how many of the people who were so heart broken then have forgotten now?" How many have moved on from that image, enough to let current events and persuasive people in power sway their sympathy to fear, close our borders, close their own personal borders. It made me sad. That little life, so full of hope and potential, fleeing terrors unspeakable to a new life in a new land... gone. Claimed by the voyage meant to save his life, give him a future. I cannot even imagine the grief of his family, if it is so painful for me still, a total stranger.

I was feeling a little bitter, honestly, like a glass of lemonade that's had all the sugar sapped out of it. The idea he'd been forgotten about, that refugees were something people were fearing rather than helping. No one thinking of the little faces with their little eyes, shut forever by circumstances so beyond their control they cannot even conceive them. Then this video showed up in my notifications and I glanced at the title and before even clicking on it the tears came. There was his name. Aylan Kurdi. Not forgotten. Instruments played in his memory. Lyrics written for the life he didn't get to have. One of many, sadly.

Thank you Amanda (and everyone who helped her bring this into the world). We need more of this.

    Wayne Rae

The boy washed up on the beach was a propaganda piece. Not saying he didn’t drown but his body was moved for the photo and his family was not in danger before his father put him on that boat.

Why was this photo displayed, uncensored, on the front page of every major newspaper in the western world, yet images of dead kids who have been run down by Islamic terrorists, sometimes refugees, are covered up?

    KORI G

Wayne Rae ..?!? Is it really propaganda to publish a photo that will shock people and make them react and maybe do something to help refugees ? Most people need to be shocked to become aware of the gravity of things, it's a fact even if it's a shame, and I think it doesn't matter how to get there if it can push some of them to move their ass for doing a right thing. Helping refugees is a right thing, no matter the vile business the media does with the images, and this isn't what the Amanda song/video is talking about, nor the comments of everyone here.
Bantha, in her/his commentary, didn't speak about the photo, but about Aylan Kurdi, this little being, who died of wanting to live, dead for having fled the war, dead because we do nothing to help them to come safe in Europe... Bantha spoke of the shameful fact that many people have probably forgotten Aylan Kurdi today.. Bantha said "How many have moved on from that image, enough to let current events and persuasive people in power sway their sympathy to fear, close our borders, close their own personal borders." and spoke about the fact "that refugees were something people were fearing rather than helping".. Because most people trust their governments and all these fucking governement's propaganda (Real ones!!!) about fairness and security, wich describes refugees as harmful, invaders, ect.. And Amanda said "Maybe now is a good time for reminder" wich is definitely true ! Nothing about what you're talking about in your comments ?!?
And a last thing, you said "his family was not in danger before his father put him on that boat" ARE YOU REALLY SERIOUS ??? The stupidity of what you said is unbelievable and awful and you might try to show a litlle bit more rescpect !!! I don't know who you are and where you're from nor where you live and I don't fucking care, but for shure you really don't seem to know how to live in a country destructed by the war is like ! I personally lived in the Pandjchir Valley with the Ahmed Shah Massoud's family from 96 to 99 fighting against the Talibans, and I can tell you that to live in the stench of death, without having to eat for weeks and having to drink only his own urine is anything but a cool thing ! I saw hundreds of people dying, and as a father I can tell you that everything you can do to try to save your children, you'll do it if you are surrounded by war and you are afraid for them !!!

    Bantha Worship

The reminder is definitely something needed right now. So much right now. Though undoubtedly frustrating at the time, it's almost like production problems happened just to make sure the reminder reached people when it was most needed. I don't think I believe in too late.

We made up deadlines, let's unmake them.

    "It's too late to help."
"It's too late to say sorry."
"It's too late to make that show."
No. No not at all. Help. Apologize. Go.

    KORI G

Wayne Rae LOL you were in the place where and when the picture was taken ? The answers is NO and you live far far far far away from this place, you just talk about a thing that you don't know nothing about, you just believe what an other crazy disturbed madmen said because you're a weak and suggestible young man, stupide enough to beleive on the racist american propaganda !! I pity you, it must be hard to live without intelligence, without love, without truth.. It looks like you're a Christian or something near, who live in America, and you're talking about muslims that you don't even know a real thing about.. but I asking myself something; do you know the history of your country where millions of native Indians were killed by migrants from whom you came, surely not.. Ok, so now that I know you're an other crazy fucking racist and hysterical madman with psychiatric problems and who invents stories to reason with himself, I know I can't talk with people like you because you'll always be right, you'll always invent things that doesn't exist just to serve your purpose, you'll always try to fool people with your hate, ..boring ! Just have one more thing to tell : I live in a country where 49,000 refugees entered this year and more than 500,000 since ten years without any of the things you invent have never existed ! All the terrorists who did horrible things here are actually born in this country, not in Africa & middle east. Terrorists here ( I mean on the real world ) are NOT refugees, only stupid and suggestible people with no intelligence, no love, no compassion, no brain, and hate, just hate.. just as you are in fact ! Just for your education; I'm a white men, buddhist and married with a muslim girl, her muslim brother is gay, her father were killed by a hysterical white racist man (as it looks you are), her muslim mother is a doctor who works in a hospital for handicapped children, and all the muslim I know here are good people with love, and compassion, and intelligence, and none of them hates anyone.. things that you'll never understand in your madness. So, one day when you'll have a moment of lucidity, please take a hydrochloric acid bath and spare the earth from your useless presence, and hatred that you hang out ! Oh and you can answers what ever you want, I won't read, bye, peace..

    Wayne Rae

KORI G I stopped reading when you Assumed I was an American Christian. Wrong on both counts. Try again.

What a beautiful song and video for such a sad subject that hurts me deeply. Refugees are OUR children, sisters, brothers, mothers, fathers, etc.. and all of us should take care of them and help them find their way back to life ! I live in a country (France) where it's forbidden to help refugees and we can even end up in jail for that... It's awful and It makes me terribly ashamed !!! But I don't care about these fratricidal laws and I'll continue to help and welcome refugees to my home as long as I can. Thanks Amanda for what you do to help them.. ...it's important.. ...and they need it so much..

    Amanda Palmer

thanks for your comment, kori. we will all stay awake to all of this, and help where and how we can. that's all we can do right now.
