Owens, Buck - Tall Dark Stranger Lyrics

Beware of a tall dark stranger
If he comes ridin' into your town
A tall dark stranger is danger (danger)
So don't let no stranger hang around

For he can capture the heart of a woman
With one glance from his flashing brown eyes
Like a bolt from the blue he can steal her from you
Then jump up on his pony and ride ride ride
So beware of a tall dark stranger...
If he comes ridin' into your town
A tall dark stranger is danger (danger)
So don't let no stranger hang around

They say a tall dark stranger is a demon
And that a devil rides closely by his side
With no warning he can strike like the thief in the night
Then jump up on his pony and ride, ride, ride
So beware of a tall dark stranger...
If he comes ridin' into your town
A tall dark stranger is danger (danger)
So don't let no stranger hang around
So don't let no stranger hang around

What happened to Country music like this? Ran out of ways to play l guess eh?

  2. w.... p....

Who else would like to hear a good punk rock band cover this?

  3. E.... M....

The only quarrel I have with this song is that a tall man wouldn't normally ride a pony. Being so small, ponies are basically for children to ride (hence pony rides for children at fairs).

  4. E.... M....

The only problem I have with the lyrics is that tall people generally don't ride ponies. Because ponies are so small, they're really best-suited to children and very short people.

In Fall 1969, months after the debut of "HEE HAW" on CBS in the summer, the ABC Television series, "MUSIC SCENE", a music variety series based on Billboard's Top 20 hits, and produced by the same people responsible for CBS's controversial "THE SMOTHERS BROTHERS COMEDY HOUR", had featured a segment with Buck Owens and The Buckaroos with the MUSIC SCENE cast doing "Tall Dark Stranger" on a Western set with Larry Hankin, one of the series' regulars, as The Tall Dark Stranger. "MUSIC SCENE" was part of a 90-minute package that aired before "THE NEW PEOPLE", ABC's early version of "LOST", and both these shows aired until Jan 1970.

On this day in 1970 {March 29th} Buck Owens and his Buckaroos performed "Act Naturally"  and "Tall Dark Stranger" on the CBS-TV program 'The Ed Sullivan Show'...
Both songs had reached #1 on Billboard's Hot Country Singles chart; "Act Naturally" peaked at #1 {for 1 week} on June 9th, 1963 and "Tall Dark Stranger" reached #1 {for 1 week} on September 21st, 1969...
"Tall Dark Stranger" also reached #1 on Cashbox's Country chart and the Canadian RPM Country chart while "Act Naturally" started a string of fourteen straight #1 records by Buck & the Boys on the Hot Country Singles chart...
Alvis 'Buck' Owens passed away on March 25th, 2006 at the age of 76...

@Let 'Em Burn My spirituality will not be diluted by the worlds galvanized biais.

  29. R.... G....

I think the actual video is the first music video I ever saw.  We used it as filler, along with Glenn Campbell's "Galveston" and "Wichita  Lineman" on AFVN TV in early 1970.  Wish I could find the actual video here.

    R.... G....

I read the comment. I think I heard it first on AFVN Radio, Roger Carrol played the tune.

    R.... G....

Arguably the first country video without using footage from a concert or tv show.

  30. J.... G....
