Owens, Buck - Lookin' Out My Back Door Lyrics

Just got home from Illinois lock the front door oh boy
Got to set down take a rest on the porch
Fascination sets in pretty soon I'm singing
Doot doot doot looking out my back door

Giant doing cartwheels a statue wearing high heels
Look at all the happy creatures dancing on the lawn
Dinosaur victrola listening to Buck Owens
Doot doot doot looking out my back door

Memories and elephants are playing in the band
Won't you take a ride on the flying spoon doot doo doo
Wondrous apparition provided by magician
Doot doot doot looking out my back door

Memories and elephants are playing in the band
Won't you take a ride on the flying spoon doot doo doo
Bother me tomorrow today I'll find no sorrow
Doot doot doot looking out my back door

All the trouble is Illinois lock the front door oh boy
Look at all the happy creatures dancing on the lawn
Bother me tomorrow today I'll find no sorrow
Doot doot doot looking out my back door

Owens, Buck Lookin' Out My Back Door Comments

Fogerty was influenced by the Bakersfield sound, which most of you know featured Buck Owens, so this song was an homage to that. I always felt that behind the behind the bayou imagery, Forgerty was Rock's Merle Haggard. It was heartland rock, before it kind of all just sounded like people trying to do Springsteen. Instead of singing for those who are against war, he sang for the people that had to go. Doesn't mean he supported it. Like Merle, he wrote for the working man. All of his songs had this aged antiquity, even when new. It's a real treat hearing Buddy sing it. I don't think Buddy ever got enough credit, but he sure looks happy whenever he sings. A lot of great singers of that era had great sons, that couldn't help but be similar to their dads. Frank Sinatra Jr, Buddy Alan Owens, Ronnie Robbins, Rex Allen Jr, and Hank Williams Jr, though I'm not quite a fan of the work he'd later be known for. He kind of started that shift in country, where they kept the sound of the outlaw movement, without the authenticity. I'm veering off too much.

Who's song is this originally? Buddy or Fogerty?

@Kirk Bolam I'm pretty sure Fogerty wrote this one.

@Kirk Bolam Buddy also recorded Fogerty's song Lodi, which I think is posted somewhere on here.

@Pete Marshall Yeah, he recorded some great music. Definitely inherited some great talent from his dad.

Very good song Brent. I like this cover of  C.C.R. I saw his dad at the Crystal Palace in 2003.
