Osborne, Joan - Son Of A Preacher Man Lyrics

Billy-Ray was a Preacher's son
And when his daddy would visit he'd come along
When they gathered round and started talking
That's when Billy would take me walking
Through the back yard we'd go walking
Then he'd look into my eyes
Lord knows to my suprise

[Chorus:]
The only boy who could ever reach me
Was the son of a preacher man
The only boy who could ever teach me
Was the son of a preacher man
He was, yes he was, oh yes he was

Being good isn't always easy
No matter how hard I tried
When he started sweet talking to me
He'd come and tell me everything is alright
He'd kiss and tell me everything is alright
Can I get away again tonight

[Chorus]

How well I remember
The look that was in his eyes
Stealing kisses from me on the sly
Taking time to make time
Telling me that he's all mine
Learning from each others knowing
Looking to see how much we'd grown

The only boy who could ever move me
Was the son of a preacher man
The only boy who could ever groove me
Was the son of a preacher man
He was, yes he was, oh yes he was

Osborne, Joan Son Of A Preacher Man Comments
  1. t.... l....

And the backup is awesome too...saw Joan with the dead shortly after Jerry died...I watched Bobby step back and shout “Good God lil sister!” Joan I love you!

  2. J.... Y....

Errr... The pics are Janis Joplin....

  3. A.... R....

    What about a rebellious man

  4. u.... ....

Love Joan but why the Janis pics? She sounds nothing like Janis.

  5. M.... T....

There is nothing to talk about, if you get it. If you don't, then ramble on Joan....

  6. g.... l....

    Awesome, wow

  7. f.... d....

Cousin billy would take me walkin …..

  8. w.... ....

Few singers can 'reach me' like this. The first lady I can recall giving me the tingles like that was Gladys Knight... For not the first time, Joan breathes life into a song! The sanitized AM radio hit of yesteryear was (even then) too plain vanilla for my developing tastes. The nod to Janis here is fitting - anything she sang, her delivery along with the fantastic job BB&HC did backing her up, was quantum levels better... Joan's band is excellent, I don't get the knock on the drummer, sorry.

  9. J.... M....

That always has been a good song and Joan pulled this off perfectly

  10. R.... C....

    wtf-- no pics of Aretha??

  11. O.... F....

Cool tribute video but Joplin's voice is coarse compared to Osborne's. I read a Janis bio where people who heard her long before she was famous said she sounded far better in her youth. Too bad no recordings from that far back exist, so far.

  12. A.... B....

    Great cover, better live.

  13. D.... B....

    Fiona.....check this out......!

  14. R.... A....

    I love her voice!

  15. V.... O....

    nice voice

  17. J.... E....

    Fantastic

  18. n.... ....

I love this song great music

  19. M.... H....

Too good for this dimension !!!

  20. J.... P....

Why are there so many pictures of Janis Joplin?

  21. C.... N....

Of course. Joan Osbourne is very religious in a rock and roll way. Kind of like Elvis Or Lana Del Rey. I like it.

  22. 9.... ....

is she the same person that sang whaf if god was one of us ?

  23. R.... W....

    '"My God What a Voice".!!!

  24. K.... ....

I have everything Joan ever recorded but this live album done before her hit 'Relish' album is by far the best. The band is a perfect sloppy tight and JOan's vocals are just perfection.

  25. J.... C....

Totally don't get all the JJ pics, but, eh, I think that's already be said. LOVE Joan's voice, going clear back to "Soul Show."

  26. l.... d....

JANIS JOPLIN DID NOT SING THIS SONG....ever!!!

  27. S.... 2....

I knew a daughter of a preacher man, dirty little thing.

  28. J.... S....

    Wow....lineage!

  29. T.... L....

Seems like this was the Dusty part of a tribute show to Dusty and Janis. Would love to hear the whole show.

  30. C.... C....

It is so awesome that we have Joan Osborne, a woman whose voice is better than most of the lady singers on the charts today. Joan's voice is fantastic. Sadly, people like Joan are over-shadowed by people like Gwen Stefani, Beyonce, and Nikki Menage, who suck so much.

  31. S.... G....

    can't get enough. go joan

  32. C.... B....

I met Joan once at a blues fest and asked her if she was a fan of Janis. She said yes, but I don't do her songs, only Janis could sing her songs.

  33. H.... P....

I'd love to see a live video of her singing this song. None on youtube it seems.

  34. C.... N....

I previously took a cyber beating for saying this, but Joan's version blows away that from Joss Stone.

  35. C.... ....

    Great version. Nice rollllllllll.

  36. J.... G....

    great voice

  37. F.... N....

    Joan has a lot soul

  38. M.... K....

rod. you were sure right about that

  39. l.... f....

can't wait to hear her !!

  40. r.... h....

Fran i love joan Osborne but in 20.years people will say "joan who?" but everyone will know who Janis is. Younhave to take the good withthe bad.

  41. a.... i....

    this my favorite version !

  42. M.... L....

yea, joan is good, but even she knows, NOBODY belts SOUL like Janis!!

  43. F.... F....

Thing is that Joan stayed Professional, Sober and Focused and is still here today to keep the fire going and entertain us.  She is much more versatile than Janis was  (God bless her and RIP)  No offence intended toward anyone, especially Janis, I love her.  I feel the same way about Jamerson verses Bob Babbit & Carole Kay  the Motown Bass Players)  Jamerson might have been the hottest but he didn't keep himself together.  Bob Babbit and Carole Kay followed him and IMO did better than Jamerson in the long run.

  44. i.... w....

Janis's favourite characters created was Lene of "Aqua" and Hasbro was going to sue over copyright issues after, "Barbie Doll" except Janis had Hasbro create Barbie a take off of Sandra Dee

  45. i.... w....

Although Janis did not charge for NEW SONGS and left monies to be paid back into the float from 1950's (1st Brenda Lee) thru to the 2000 + the taxes kept coming into the countries...the reason for the compositions which makes no sense to anyone unless one was to pick up a baby that starved to death. Anne Lenox, ABBA, LeAnnRimes, Dolly Parton, Dusty Springfield, June Carter, Spacey, Cher (#1 60's not TV cher)...100's of characters and the taxes kept coming in.

  46. i.... w....

Janis also composed band and classical, etc, Patricia Rosema, "Mansfield Park" concerto and wrote down ALL of the original band as "COMPOSERS" cause Janis would ask for notes and the band would play it back and autistically would alleviate the notes that did NOT fit but without the orchestra, "Mansfield Park" would not have had wings.

  47. i.... w....

Janis was the first composer for about 100 female singers, but also composed for male singers, blues, country, jazz, kidd rock, rock, hard rock, including Cindi Lauper, Sheryl Crow, etc, etc, 99 x's, Janis would hire lookalikes to carry on and rarely came back to take up first position, unless, of course, there was a copyright problem and if, everyone was quiet, would add on new musical compositions for several at a time. Janis was, "pitch perfect" in every scale

  48. i.... w....

Janis was the composer before the blond hair...do we need to go to court?

  49. f.... w....

Joan Osborne could charm a man's skeleton right out of his body. She's been known to levitate full grown adults with just her voice. It is rumored that she speaks a language only spoken by three others in the world and those three are horses. I could go on, but it might get silly.

    f.... w....

Really?  Who else could charm a man's skeleton out of his body?

    f.... w....

    ...and yet you don't.

    f.... w....

flor wast I don't know about the whole skeleton, but back in the god is one of us days she sure could coax a bone out of me!!!! Wink wink nudge nudge! I think she was and is and will be one of the more beautiful women in music! voice and looks !!! People keep going on about Janis Joplin in the comments, Love me some Janis but she could make a cannibal eat a salad!!!! Compared to Joan Osbourne looks wise that is!!!

    f.... w....

Joan's voice is triple-jointed, and is capable of singing notes incomprehensible by any normal human.

    f.... w....

I am pretty sure she could knock Chuck Norris to his knees. 😂

  50. T.... H....

Only good recording I can find on You Tube. Ugh. Why Janis and shit. Hello its Joan Osbourne. Bless you love, Awesome cover back in the day. ; )

  51. L.... L....

c'est cette guitare  que je veut

  52. T.... E....

I love Joan Osborne always have always will... Why in the hell is this drummer on the gig!?!? The guy has no swing in his thing at all! I'm shocked honest to god I'm shocked. the guy wouldn't know a groove if he fell in one ......... if I was the MD I fired that guy right after this song

  53. K.... ....

    JANIS IS RAW SEXY

  54. P.... M....

    White Hot Soul!

  55. D.... S....

Showin some pipes, This is dam fine

  56. B.... P....

    Joan is outstanding!

  57. B.... ....

what exactly does Janis have to do with this cover?

    B.... ....

Omar Coston but Joan hasn't ruined her life with "substance abuse "

    B.... ....

wondering that meself... oh thats janice ....thats janice...janice agian ...distinct lack of dusty

    B.... ....

This is a Dusty Springfield song. Not a Janis Joplin song.

    B.... ....

It's a tribute to Janis and other vocalist/s

    B.... ....

    Was Hendrix dad a preacher

  58. S.... C....

Love female singers with raspy voices.

  59. F.... N....

girl got soul, and a voice to go with it!

  60. C.... ....

Joan never ceases to make me wonder about her! She can be anything, any color, any genre, be soft and loving, crazy as a loon, deep, deadhead full of love woman who ROCKS!!!

    C.... ....

    Well said!

    C.... ....

    Chris Noyb thank you.

    C.... ....

Agree. For the latest demonstration of her talent to be "anything" check her album of Dylan covers. Sure, ton of super covers of Dylan's works. Her album brings new vision, and diverse arrangement and voice, to each song she chose. And she chose not just "hits" but also some deeeeeep cuts of his. Just love her.

  61. T.... O....

Oh yes girl , sing it. So sweet.

  62. n.... d....

    son of a preacher

    n.... d....

    I love this one 😍😍🎊🎉🎊

    n.... d....

    +Tracey ƸӜƷ me too !!!!!!!

    n.... d....

    Me to adrastos

  63. T.... ....

Dusty owns this. This is a rough cut.

  64. J.... M....

saw her once...fell for her soul, spirit and amazing eyes.

  65. V.... P....

Great performance and thanks for uploading but why the Dusty Springfield & Janis Joplin images for the opening of the video? I understand the obvious comparisons but I think it only does Joan a disservice by potentially creating confusion among the less informed and judging by some of the comments it already has. A few pics of Joan or even one static shot would have been a far better choice I feel.

  66. S.... F....

    Joan is doing a Fine job here . . . .

  67. S.... F....

    what an era , Big hair do's real tittie's and furry pussy's . . .

  68. L.... M....

Joan PWNAGE of Son of A Preacher Man <3

  69. C.... M....

I just love your Music, Ma'am!

  70. M.... B....

Sadly, I don't find this version good at all. It seems to be a one, big show off, there's no feeling in it. Sometimes you need to tone down a bit and do what's best for the song.

  71. R.... L....

    My Goodness!

  72. U.... A....

I clicked the link..."son of a preacher man"?  ALWAYS Dusty.  Joan is the voice 'Merica NEEDS.  LMFO...yup...a strong woman like Janis and Grace.  MMmmmm...Joan will always be amongst my top faves.  Cuz she CAN do it.  ;-)

    U.... A....

    @Christopher Chambers Damn straight.  Joan!

  73. T.... ....

Damn, I love Joan! She can blend pop rock and blues like nobody's business.

  74. B.... H....

You asked why pictures of Dusty - she sang it first. Also try joss Stone's version

    B.... H....

And no mention of Aretha, who sang hands-down the best version?

    B.... H....

@cableaddict Aretha turned down the song, originally...she only recorded it after Dusty made a hit of it. ;-)

  75. n.... ....

    what a voice :)

  76. W.... S....

    I was a Son A Of A Preacher Man !!!

  77. M.... ....

    Who's the woman at 3.00 ?

    M.... ....

    LOL that's who's singing.

    M.... ....

    @Marcel66ish that's joan osborne

  78. D.... ....

    She's awesome!

  79. k.... a....

I want Trigger Hippy to cover this

  80. A.... K....

    the only boy

  81. Z.... ....

    Great Cover

  82. w.... ....

Terrific!  I'm glad that she's keeping these great songs alive.  Has she ever paid tribute to Linda Ronstadt?

  83. k.... ....

Who knew.  I was a fan, but I had no idea she could sing like that,

  84. S.... M....

would love to SEE her doing that! Love it!

  85. G.... R....

ok, maybe i'm ignorant, but why show images of JJ when this was a Dusty Springfield song?

    G.... R....

Was thinking the same thing myself.

    G.... R....

@Gregory Rush  cause JJ did an iconic cover of it as well

    G.... R....

@Gregory Rush Exactly! But I did see Joan Osborne at the Wetlands in the summer of '92 before she had her hit n '95 and remember thinking she was so much like JJ (though much prettier) and she proceeded to make fun of me because I was drunk sitting on stage while she was performing with her hand on my head so I couldn't leave at that point. I even came across a picture of that night on the internet. Very much like JJ minus the Jack Daniels. Was amazing!

  86. Z.... B....

I've always had Joan up on a pedestal for her song 'One of Us', and for her to cover another one of my all-time faves is a treat! The soulful ad-libs near the end and piano solo in the middle add good flavour.

  87. J.... E....

    What about the original?

  88. R.... M....

One of the great vocalists of our time. But that's just my opinion

    R.... M....

Such a hidden treasure....I concur with your assessment!

    R.... M....

    ..good opinion. )

    R.... M....

YEsssss, she's got me singing and I don't even sang!!!

  89. h.... g....

i always loved the original but damn..she so owns this song

  90. L.... T....

Pastor Harris' little boy on TV 4 is a "PK !!!!!" lol

  91. j.... ....

totally one of my favorite songs of all times !

  92. J.... D....

a flawless voice for live singing so very very rare these days & it's a pity

  93. L.... L....

Hell yeah zbg68! My thoughts exactly. Who needs a video when there is a killer performance going on right in front of an audience!? Last concert I attended, most everyone had their cell phones out taking video and missing the great stuff going on the stage, but meh, whatever they like, I guess...

  94. M.... ....

    Joan is one of us.
