Osborne, Joan - Midnight Train To Georgia Lyrics

L.A. proved too much for the man
So he's leavin' the life that he's come to know
He said he's goin' back to find
Ohhh what's left of his world
The world he left behind not so long ago

He's leavin'
On that midnight train to Georgia
Said he's goin' back to find
A simpler place and time

I'll be with him
On that midnight train to Georgia
I'd rather live in his world
Than live without him in mine

He kept dreamin'
Ohhh that someday he'd be a star,
But he sure found out the hard way
That dreams don't always come true

So he pawned all his hopes
And he even sold his old car
Bought a one way ticket back
To the life he used to know
Oh yes he did

Now now he's leavin'
On that midnight train to Georgia
He said he's goin' back to find
A simpler place and time

I'll be with him
On that midnight train to Georgia
Ohhh I'd rather live in his world
Than live without him in mine

All aboard on a midnight train to Georgia
I gotta be with him on a midnight train to Georgia
On a midnight train said
I gotta be with him
Ohhh I gotta be with him on a midnight train to Georgia
I gotta go, I gotta go, I gotta go to a midnight train to Georgia
On a midnight train to Georgia

Osborne, Joan Midnight Train To Georgia Comments
  1. A.... B....

    Thank you the good wife!!

  2. L.... ....

One of my favourite Joan covers.... this and What Becomes of the Brokenhearted..

(Originals "What You Are" and of course "One Of Us" light me up in their different ways as well. .... :-) and i feel like there's something else from her that zapped me with connection & i'm forgetting it, but....)

  3. p.... ....

I half believe that's actually the Pips singing backup!

  4. R.... H....

Now Gladys Knight does this best. But this cover is great. She doesn't try and outdo Gladys and sings it with grace and cool. She should be Black.

  5. T.... T....

ONE OF THE MOST OVERRATED SINGERS OUT THERE,

  6. S.... C....

I wonder if, after making this recording, they realized that they had just made a remarkable piece of music history.

  7. t.... ....

good cover-but not as good as the raw emotion  on g & pips version-this is a lightweight

  8. K.... R....

I'm quite sure Gladys shed a tear when she heard this. Beautiful

  9. d.... m....

Gladys is the GOAT, but Joan got next.

  10. V.... ....

    Wow how great is this?

  11. R.... A....

Sounds so mellow and soulful. Not trying to copy the original, makes it so much better.

  12. B.... ....

    >>>----<3---->

  13. H.... G....

She is an awesome talent! Love her

  14. H.... B....

This is a Black song, made by the great Gladys Knight & the Pips. And, it will be both heard and seen in this manner in perpetuity.
But it was most assuredly, a nice try, Joan Osborne.

  15. B.... P....

    Amazing,,,GA boy here....

  16. Q.... F....

Great track and super vocals. Came here by chance. Subbed. Do stop by take a listen and sub back.

  17. M.... P....

    2018 alguém?

    M.... P....

    Manoel Pereira Lopes Oi.Boa Noite

  18. P.... A....

Pure white soul, you got to love this

  19. J.... T....

Love the instrumental, especially the keyboard. Very mellow.

  20. A.... D....

LA proved too much for the man
(Too much for a man, he couldn't take it)
He couldnt make it, so he's leaving a life he's come to know
    (He said he's going)
He said he's going back to find
    (Going back to find)
    What's left of his world
The world he left behind not so long ago

    He's leaving
    (Leaving)
On that midnight train to Georgia
    (Leaving on a midnight train)
    Said he's going back
    (Going back to find)
To find a simpler place and time
(Whenever he takes that ride, guess who's gonna be right by his side)
    I'll be with him
    (I know you will)
On that midnight train to Georgia
(Leaving on a midnight train to Georgia, woo woo)
I'd rather live in his world,
    (Live in his world)
Than live without him in mine
(World, world, is his and hers alone)

  21. P.... K....

Joan, seriously, call me. I will lay backing tracks to this that can not be denied.

  22. M.... B....

    Midnight Train To Georgia"

L.A. proved too much for the man
(Too much for the man, he couldn't make it)
So he's leaving a life he's come to know, ooh
    (He said he's going)
He said he's going back to find
    (Going back to find)
Ooh, what's left of his world
The world he left behind not so long ago

    He's leaving
    (Leaving)
On that midnight train to Georgia, yeah
    (Leaving on the midnight train)
    Said he's going back
    (Going back to find)
To a simpler place and time, oh yes he is
(Whenever he takes that ride, guess who's gonna be right by his side)
    I'll be with him
    (I know you will)
On that midnight train to Georgia
(Leaving on a midnight train to Georgia, woo woo)
I'd rather live in his world
    (Live in his world)
Than live without him in mine
(Her world is his, his and hers alone)

    He kept dreaming
    (Dreaming)
Ooh, that some day he'd be a star
(A superstar, but he didn't get far)
But he sure found out the hard way
That dreams don't always come true, oh no, uh uh
(Dreams don't always come true, uh uh, no, uh uh)
So he pawned down his hopes
    (Woo, woo, woo-woo)
And even sold his old car
    (Woo, woo, woo-woo)
Bought a one way ticket back to the life he once knew
Oh yes he did, he said he would

    Oh-oh, he's leaving
    (Leaving)
On that midnight train to Georgia, yeah
    (Leaving on a midnight train)
Said he's going back to find, ooh
    (Going back to find)
A simpler place and time, ooh, yeah
(Whenever he takes that ride, guess who's gonna be right by his side)
    I'm gonna be with him
    (I know you will)
On that midnight train to Georgia
(Leaving on a midnight train to Georgia, woo woo)
I'd rather live in his world
    (Live in his world)
Than live without him in mine
(Her world is his, his and hers alone)

    Ooh, he's leaving
    (Leaving)
On the midnight train to Georgia, yeah, ooh y'all
    (Leaving on the midnight train)
Said he's going back to find
    (Going back to find)
Ooh, a simpler place and time, ooh y'all, uh-huh
(Whenever he takes that ride, guess who's gonna be right by his side)
I've got to be with him
    (I know you will)
On that midnight train to Georgia
(Leaving on a midnight train to Georgia, woo woo)
I'd rather live in his world
    (Live in his world)
Than live without him in mine
(Her world is his, his and hers alone)

For love, gonna board the midnight train to ride
For love, gonna board, gotta board the midnight train to go
For love, gonna board, uh huh, the midnight train to go
My world, his world, our world, mine and his alone
My world, his world, our world, mine and his alone
    I got to go
    I got to go
    I got to go, hey
    I got to go
    I got to go
My world, his world, my man, his girl
    I got to go
    I got to go, oh
    I got to go
My world, his world, our world, his girl

  23. L.... T....

Yes, Joan Osborne has a fantastic voice, she sings great songs in a great way.

  24. f.... w....

Not as good as Gladys Knight but very good; Joan is ALWAYS very good...

  25. F.... A....

I love the band in this version

  26. p.... ....

Loved Joan even more on the Motown stage !

  27. R.... G....

Drummer, lay off the cymbals, tish, tish ,tish, really.

  28. A.... A....

    Eres la mejor . WP3NK .

  29. d.... g....

does anyone know if gladys knight ever worked with the funk brothers?

    d.... g....

Bob Babbet played bass on the original Midnight Train to Georgia

    d.... g....

Yes she was in the Motown camp until 1973

  30. O.... T....

dayaaaaam this woman can SAAAANG -- her voice makes u believe she's been thru the lyrics for real!  Work It baby! you got a fan here in DC for real!

  31. M.... C....

Where did this lass come from? Surly not Ireland but she has a little of that strangeness in her blend.

  32. D.... C....

Just discovered Joan. Phew! Part of the elite.

  33. b.... ....

I never really liked this song until I heard Joan's version....

    b.... ....

I love the original recording by Gladys Knight and the Pips but many have butchered it including the great Aretha Franklin. Joan Osborne seemingly can do no wrong - she handles so many styles of music brilliantly.

  34. C.... G....

    é um anjo, deve ser...

  35. J.... ....

I listened two days ago this version in an episode of the TV series The Good Wife and I loved it. I think one of the best versions of this song !!!!

  36. N.... B....

love it still love the pip tho

  37. T.... M....

    Excellent

  38. N.... 5....

    e²njoy:D

  39. M.... M....

I really like this one !!!!

  40. J.... B....

great version, what a voice .brilliant

  41. L.... B....

I just love the sound of MOTOWN and what a time I we had in that era of Detroit and the 20 Grand where everyone of them great singers and groups had been there that was the place, Black & White we all had a grand time. I am today Brother Leonard BAGDOL, PRAISE GOD that he Loves all, Amen.

    L.... B....

I AM FROM DETROIT AND I AM WHITE I WAS TEENAGER WHEN MOTOWN WAS AT ITS PRIME

  42. S.... W....

    you rock my world........

  43. M.... G....

    the best version for me...

  44. p.... e....

HERMOSA CANCION SIEMPRE GRACIAS DESDE VZLA

  45. b.... ....

I not only love to hear her sing Motown, I love to WATCH her. This gal obviously just LOVES to sing and it shows.

    b.... ....

I hear ya bro. The way she moves and dances across the stage is just about as beautiful as that incredible voice of hers. She got soul down to her toes.

    b.... ....

you summed it up for me..Motown could easily ..have a new superstar remake all the old classics with joan as the main voice wonderful...sublime

    b.... ....

brianncowan songs she did with the Funk Brothers yeah!

  46. s.... l....

yeah. it never ceases to amaze me how many people have never even heard of her. I have gone thru two of her cd"Relish" she puts her own spin n every song she sings and it is always great!

    s.... l....

+Sandy Bamburg Relish is one of my favourite albums of all time. Melodic, sad, sleazy and angry, as well as a whole load of fun. If anything, this track is her playing it safe. She coulda tackled it the way Gladys did, and rocked it.

  47. M.... ....

The Good Wife brought me here ! :)

  48. M.... K....

    EXCELLENT. SHE VOICE ,I LOVED

  49. W.... K....

    Talent+++++++++++

  50. P.... N....

    Very Nice!!

  55. O.... G....

Excelente melodia. Desde Villa Huidobro Cordoba Argentina

  56. C.... M....

    Whew...killer cover!!!

  57. T.... M....

white irish guy here who loves led zep, petty, seger says that Galdy's Knight sang the most perfect song ever recorded

  58. s.... l....

I have been listening to her for years , now. She has the best voice of anybody , anywhere. To listen to her sing brings all the feeling the person that wr to te the songs wanted to pass on. She is a great songwriter, as well. If you don't believe it, just listen to he r sing St. Teresa. She is great!!!!!

    s.... l....

+Sandy Bamburg She can sing like Barbara, Roberta, celine, -name one I dare anyone. Smooth, sweet, gritty, bluesy, name it. Her voice is straight from heaven. Under rated, every time I send "the broken hearted to some one they are hooked. Gladys Night was great, but no on one can be the best forever. Joan is so good she is hard to believe.

    s.... l....

Unfortunately 99% percent of people still prefer Lady Gaga and such shit as that over talent and vocal performance.

    s.... l....

    @BlueRidgeKat1 - I can't understand the thumbs down.

  59. J.... ....

    Just BRILLIANT!

  60. s.... ....

    God is Able😇⚡️😇

  61. R.... ....

An excellent cover of this classic.

  62. J.... P....

    She has a great instrument

  63. A.... M....

Joanna great love her music great music

  64. M.... M....

I love Joan to death. Super star!!!

  65. L.... H....

This is a decent version; more country than R&B although they are close sisters.  Regarding Glady's version - I prefer and will always love the old school Glady's version.  I thing Glady's range/delaying with the singing the melody & not being so straight with the beat make hers better.  Plus Glady's voice quality... Good God!

    L.... H....

+Luther Harris French fries and mashed potatoes ... both tasty, but still potatoes. This woman could sing the phone book and I'd listen. Loved Gladys, too.

    L.... H....

    +Luther Harris How true.

    L.... H....

+Luther Harris Actually this song was originally a country song called Midnight Plane to Houston written and recorded by Jim Weatherly, it was reworded and the first version of Midnight Train to Georgia was recorded by the great Cissy Houston.

  66. G.... S....

I've had the hugest crush on Joan for years. Too bad she's gay and rich... I don't have a chance lol

    G.... S....

Joan Osborne has chosen homosexuality but she's gay about it.

  67. m.... ....

I love Joan to death. Super star!!!

  68. O.... T....

Her voice knocks me the fk out!!!

  69. 1.... ....

Being a huge Gladys Knight and the Pips fan, I had to listen I didn't know about this cover. Not usually into covers but I love Joan and gave a listen. She does it right.

    1.... ....

10mikemikeshooter check her out in standing in the shadows of Motown or the funk brothers live in Montreal , think you'll enjoy it

  70. N.... F....

JOAN OSBORNE,SUCH A COOL VOICE WITH SO MUCH POWER,FANTASTIC.  THANKS

  71. P.... O....

So talented! and a pure voice and face So beautiful in and out :D

  72. m.... ....

    The voice of an angel.

  73. D.... V....

Joan could teach the Hip Hop people a few things about music.  Pax DV

    D.... V....

Duane Vachon I don't think so. She's great at what she does , but she's not hip hop grounded.

  74. D.... T....

JOAN IS THE BEST SOUL SINGER OF THIS TIME !

    D.... T....

How can i talk to ya

    D.... T....

She is one of my favs... especially of those so unknown for so much talent. But I have to pay respect to Susan Tedeschi, and everything the Tedeschi Trucks band comes with... a fully stage of talent, all of them, and of course Derek "freakin" Trucks. Anyone love them like I do?

    D.... T....

Respectabledude she is very good, but Joss Stone, love love love.

    D.... T....

I respect Joss for sure.... but if you haven't heard it, check this:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PG1_LAAL4w0

    D.... T....

    Mike Solomon will do. Thanks.

  75. D.... G....

One of the best R&B Soul Singers today. Fantastic band, and the groove Eddie Bayers plays on drums simply makes the track!

    D.... G....

She really is and she pours so much emotion into all her songs!! She is def one of my all-time favorites!!

    D.... G....

Also the lead guitarist up-front is excellent!

  76. T.... T....

    OZZYS'  FIRST WIFE ?

  77. C.... F....

Who hits the thumbs down on this? WTF

    C.... F....

Those 6 people that thumbed down missed the train and they are mad

    C.... F....

8 killjoys now with their thumbs going the wrong way. Probably Gladys Knight's mom, 4 bridge club buddies, and all three Pips! I'm just lately discovering Joan Osborne. A great singer, and perhaps at her best as a cover girl. She does these classics justice… no small feat. Frequently when an artist attempts to remake a legendary cut, your reaction is "Who does this joker think he/she is covering THIS GREAT SONG?" Not at all the feeling here. She dissolves right into the work like a cloud blending into the sky. You know she respects the source material and simply is in love with the song. The appropriate humility it takes to perform another artists signature work, and carry it off, is palpable. Just a tremendous talent.

    C.... F....

    Baffling, isn't it?

  78. R.... K....

I would take that midnight train with Joan!Only in my imagination of course!

  79. .... ....

    Бэк вокал - суперкласс.

  80. C.... M....

I'll be with him on that Midnight Train to Georgia...

  81. C.... M....

So he pawned all his hopes and he even sold his old car......

  82. J.... M....

You got soul babe. Bravo Joan !! beautiful perfomance

  83. m.... b....

Beautiful song for a great singer !

  84. C.... F....

Gladys Knight's of course is iconic, but I really like this.

  85. a.... t....

    lovely song

  86. d.... ....

"i'd rather live in his world than live without him in mine" went out the window years ago,not many people stay together anymore, beautiful song and beautiful lady, thank you for posting!!!!!

    d.... ....

35 years together, out of it 3 years apart. 2 years military (not even one brake, solid, some letters, me all over the world) 1 year separated, marital problems, with small brakes, yet We survived. I won't hesitate, be it Midnight Train to Georgia I'll be with her .. Call me a fool but I still love her and that's where is at.

  87. C.... M....

gonna back to find a simpler place in time

  88. C.... M....

Tribute to Gladys Knight & The Pips!

  89. C.... M....

    She's a Sister to Soul!

    C.... M....

+Cindy Marshall Yup, blue-eyed soul at it's finest!

  90. N.... W....

I Like this kid. Nice soothing sound to chill

  91. b.... z....

found her by accident a month ago i admit i am a prick but this woman is beyond this planet from dylan to motown awesome beyond belief

  92. c.... h....

    thank you Joan.

  93. s.... ....

I saw that movie and I agree with you.

  94. R.... R....

I can play this on my guitar all the day long. Beautiful! Simply Beautiful!

  95. J.... R....

My 2 favorite new female blues singers are Josh Stone and Joan Osborne. They both have songs, performances and cds that totally smoke! Sultry, sexy and bluesy man! I love them both.

  96. J.... R....

Check out the movie "Standing in the Shadows of Motown," she's in it and sings "Heatwave," and other classic Motown songs. One of my favorite scenes is the cafe scene, the keyboardist and bassist (I think) from the Funk Brothers are talking about how they came up with songs, they snapped their fingers, Joan was in the middle snapping her fingers too, man, they were making a new song right there.... I wish I could have been there too... Fun moments.

  97. J.... H....

MAN I LISTENED TO THIS ON THE GOOD WIFE AS WELL AND IM FELING HER SOULFUL VOICE WHERE DID SHE COME FROM...JUS AMAZED I ALSO LISTENED TO SARA SMILE AND ITS BEAUTIFUL AS WELL

  98. M.... M....

    thanks for song
