Oh John to throw me a stick last month in Portland! Couldn't believe how solid everyone in the band was. Went for John, enjoyed it for the band. Especially their bassist he was fucking gnarly. Could barely keep up with the Insanity of it all.

Would sound way better if he did more hand work. For example at the beginning the rests and short bursts of double bass would have sounded better on the snare because there's already so much low end in the music as it is. The drums don't really cut through at all. Another thing i've observed is that triggers ruined death metal. Makes everything sound rigid. It's self defeating to sacrifice the organic feel of the music to make high speeds more audible. A lot of black metal bands have it figured out. Death metal is behind. Regardless, i gave this video a thumbs up because the drummer is still tight if not musical.

I am sad to agree with this comment. Death metal has jumped the shark with the triggering. I’m ok with the process but it pushed many bands into a mechanical sound for percussion and we’ve lost the muscle in the genre. It’s the difference between skinny speed junkies and beefy steroid addicts. One or the other.

I have to admit, I'm not exactly an avid fan of heel-toe but he seems to have perfected it. Too often do I see drummers using heel-toe that are sloppy at anything below 230bpm; it sounds gallopy and inconsistent. But not with this guy. Easily pulls off plenty of double bass grooves (the trigger sounds like shit tho) despite the otherwise mechanical and frankly lazy technique.

His hand technique is seriously bad though. Like, really. You'd need to trigger everything else to get a decent sound, and it's not exactly overly technical either. You can tell they're keeping the fills to a minimum here because he can only get 2 and a half strokes on fills that are supposed to be 4. This is only slightly offset by his moderate capability of blasting, but even that's thrown out the window by the low volume and awful sound of the whole kit. Well, the toms don't sound so bad but he barely uses them here.

A serious response here. Origin is a short fill band with a short fill drummer. Longstreth vs Kollias (and Laureano) from Nile... similar ideas but the music calls for different things. Origin is very stop start, Nile plays long fills and the drums follow.

I personally don’t really like Origin. It’s too chaotic for me. But there is no question that Longstreth is the closest drummer alive to being a drum machine, in all seriousness. He doesn’t have to quantise everything.

Listen again. The short fills are even harder to play and that’s why most don’t do them. And yes. Maybe he’s just sitting on his limits. That’s OK too.
