Opeth - Godhead's Lament Lyrics
Marauder
Staining the soil, midst of stillness
Beloved fraternity to an end
Red eyes probe the scene
All the same
Depravity from the core
Handcarved death in stoneladen aisles
I hide the scars from my past
Yet they sense my (mute) dirge
This is when it all falls apart
White hands grasping for straws
Sly smile, poisoned glare behind
Undisguised manmade nova
Searing beams tracking you down
Adoring what never has been
Some will bring with them all they have seen
Searching my way to perplexion
The gleam of her eyes
In that moment she knew
Thought I could not leave this place
On this imminent day
As I've reached the final dawn
To what's gone astray
What would they care if I did stay
No-one would know
What would they care if I did stay
No-one should know
Thought I could not leave this place
On this imminent day
As I've reached the final dawn
To what's gone astray
What would they care if I did stay
No-one would know
What would they care if I did stay
No-one should know
Still brooding, soothing clam
That rigid, twisted face
Blank godhead, tear my name
Lost virtue, frantic lust
Sly smile, poisoned glare behind
Undisguised manmade nova
Mute cry, don't dare to tread
Searing beams tracking you down
Adoring what never has been
Some will bring with them all they have seen
Searching my way to perplexion
In crumbling faith I saw her
Bearing her pain in the wilderness
The gleam of her eyes
In that moment she knew

Opeth Godhead's Lament Comments
Is there anything better in music than 2:54 to 3:45? Holy fuck that was orgasmic
At 3:40 starts the peak of soul touching music. Those cleans are otherwordly.
One of the Best Albums ever!
came here after listening to in cauda venenum, try to clease my ears with real opeth.
You know it's an Opeth song when everybody is commenting different timestamps and praising that section.
o/peth'se, koy se/peth'e :D
Stupendous the way this track starts...
The first riff is the best.
I'm thoroughly satisfied with the offerings that this unbelievably exceptional band has made throughout the pre-heritage era. I'm glad that they changed their direction just at the right phase when the fuel of passion for death metal was on the brink of a burn out, and now their prior records gains even more value in the perception of an unprogressive fan like me .
Opeth4Life.
Thats such a refreshing take on it, stating a preference while staying respectful to the bands new direction, props from me
Still way better than all the death metal nowadays, sure those bands may be faster and more technical but they still pale in comparison to Opeth. New death metal bands songs don't stand the test of time. Opeth is like classical compositions. Genius music.
Morningrise, Still Life and Blackwater Park, perfect albums.
Greatest band of all time!! And I am actually just discovering their awesomeness, haven't even heard all of their albums yet. What a journey I am on!!!
Lol i was you at this time last year. Listen to My Arms, Your Hearse if you haven't yet. Amazing album.
Lol you're so lucky. Your journey will only get better. I have listened to everything by them and enough times to get over it but still. Now they have become nostalgic.
My Arms Your Hearse through Ghost Reveries represents their best work imho.
@Phteven Phpielberg I agree!!!!!!
And I really enjoy their songs live more pretty much, sorry burnt out from working 15 hr days
This is medieval as fuck.
Perfection!
7:25 ohhhh baby
16.12.2018
The riff that starts at 5:52 is so refreshing, so rich and simply put, beautiful. I wish I could live in it.
Simply stellar. And a wonder to behold.
can that beat in the intro be considered a blast beat? because it kind of has the same feel but smoother because there’s only 1 snare in the off beat
That ain't no Blast beat
No, it has to have those constant snare hits to fit the definition of a blast beat.
Allah varlığıyla doğru orantılı bir şarkı
This song is seriously criminally underrated. How has it only 54k views? Its got everything you need to make a great opeth song.
No tiene madre esta canción. Dificil hasta la ptm
Goddamn Masterpiece!
I've listened to this song thousands of times and I deduced that the solo at 2:54 is the greatest solo of that length that I've ever heard :)
I agree, that solo is the peak of Opeth and music. 7:20 in The Moor is a close second
Masterpiece
Mikael's clean vocals in this song > everything else in the universe
This album is so perfect.
It's not only that the concept is great and that each songs flows perfectly to the other.
Even individually, the tracks are beyond epic.
All time favorite Opeth song
Its really a shame they don't write like this anymore.
I neglected to really learn chords for most of the time I've been playing guitar (because bad habits of teaching myself from the age of 10 lol) and I'm trying to learn this song. It's hard but so much fun
... ive been working weeks on learning this song n bass now... realizing just now i shouldnt have ruined lisening to this master piece for myself......
Shaun Tiggelman For me it was another way around. Now afer learning how to play this I appreciate this masterpiece even more
Radek Wiatrowski If youre playing bass check out this band Kingston Wall
New albums are not bad, but magic of their prog-death masterpieces rarely resurfaces in new songs...
DarkF4k3 this is how I feel as well. I’m okay with it because they leave a huge catalog of death-prog in old Opeth, but I will never say no to new material in this style.
any one got the bass sheet for me
lol the lyrics "Still brooding, soothing clam"
The soothing clam shall remain
Richard Handler you used azlyrics didn't you?
actually, that's how it is written in the actual liner notes ;)
a typo most likely but it's there for eternity.
@Richard Handler Yes, embrace the meme.
Should have been whispering eye
This is the greatest song ever written.
ZACHARY VIGIL I find very hard to argue with that statement. Definately the most (fictionally) emotionally charged song ever written.
No such thing
I think that opeth's new direction is awesome, but unlike their old stuff there is nothing special about it, i mean, there's a lot of psychdelic prog bands arround, but there are not a lot of progressive death metal band that can bring this kind of feelings that Opeth does. I think that the only artist that make prog death stuff like Mikael used to do is Dan Swano. I don't know, I really miss this Opeth
Vitor Machado Hey these albums didnt go anywhere.
Yeah, I know, but i really wish they make another one in this style, would be awessome don't you think? Or just put more death metal elements in their new ideas, but that just my opinion hahaha
Check out the band In Mourning, they are clearly major fans of the Opeth sound and are fellow countrymen to this band.
+toxzik thanks man didnt know them, i'll check them
1:12 - I HIDE THOSE GUYS FROM MY PAST, YET THEY SENSE MY DUDES!
cannot be unheard
😂😂😂
0:13 that slide \m/
Never noticed that holy shit hahaha
I've listenend to this song 40+ times (maybe 120, I really lost track of that) but I've never noticed it. There's always something new to discover in their songs
1:41 T H A T R I F F
the riff right before it too
The ultimate *bad/evil guy enters room* riff
@Eddie Pacer No, that riff at 1:41 is everything.
The acoustic middle section has to be the most emotional and heartfelt thing I've ever seen (heard)
i only have one thing to add to this lissen benighted
@Shaun Tiggelman the song or the band?
*Åkerfeldt thing
Seriously, one of the best songs i've ever heard. This is incredible music.
their best song from their best album
Brian Melvin I prefer The Moor
The Moor is pretty much the standout track in my opinion but this and Moonlapse Vertigo just gave the album an incredible booster....
The Moor and Moonlapse Vertigo tho
Masterpiece
That godlike solo transitioning into a beautiful clean vocal part is sooooo goood
One of Mikael's best solos...
@tymongoji Thought it was Peter doing the solo
Fuckin A
who is listening to this right now? its always good knowing people with bomb music taste still exist..
Hells yeah!
Idil Yaktubay right now
All day err day
Me 2 Years After your comment
best song
this is amazing!! ;0
Una de mis bandas favoritas.
the first verse from 0:28 to 0:58 I love the alternation between the two voices (the first growl and the second lower)
I totally agree! I think the higher pitched growl was not used that much after still life. The best part of this album, imo, is the the Chorus on Serenity Painted Death where the second repetition shows Mikael rocking that awesome voice, even for just a couple of Seconds :D
there’s even more of that in the leper affinity
It's a shame they dont write music like this any more
I miss there utterly epic progressive death metal journeys too. It's just so hauntingly beautiful.
you're so right. it always comes to my mind when I listen to their old epic music. It's sad
To be fair, they explored the formula about as much as they could have.
they still write good music though! they felt they needed a change and they're free to do so
It would get boring for everyone and it would no longer be unique, they've moved on, and well I must say
Fuck yeah!
Fucking Fire.
Hail Satan
