Olivia Newton-John - Changes Lyrics
We said a million times we'd change
Can't bring myself to say those words again
A piper never changes tune
You can't grow apples on the moon
And whispered sorrys always come too late
Then the damage has been done
What are we going to tell our son?
I want to spare his broken heart
Break it gently that we'll live apart
Don't know the proper words to say
He won't be seeing daddy every day
Those weekly outings never work, you know
They can't replace the man around
Your voice, your touch, your manly sound
I guess the trouble is I love you still
And if it comes to that, I always will
No, please don't cry, it's just too late
Now hurry on, she's waiting at the gate

Your voice your touch your womanly sound
delicious
A snippet of words passed through my head this morning..."What are we going to tell our Son"...and my first thought was that it was the beautiful voice of Olivia's I remember hearing sing it.
But dear Lord what is the title...how does the song go....I haven't heard this since I was 8 or 9 years old back in the early 70's..!!
I had to find a song lyric list of every song she has sung and then go through it hoping to find what I'm looking for.
Found a list....meandered down the list saying no...no...no...nope...not it...no...no. Luckily I didn't have to go far...saw CHANGES and just knew that had to be it. First line, "We said a million times we'd change" and I was certain this was what I was looking for. So crazy how memory works in this instance, especially after 47 years of not hearing this song.
Long story short, here it is. It is beautiful and made me get watery eyed. Thanks for posting it.
An everlasting great piece..
Such a precious song. My favorite of hers.
Please think about your children before you divorce.
top tune
We said a million times we'd change
Can't bring myself to say those words again
A piper never changes tune
You can't grow apples on the moon
The hurtful things we say still penetrate
And whispered sorrys always come too late
Then the damage has been done
What are we going to tell our son?
I want to spare his broken heart
Break it gently that we'll live apart
Don't know the proper words to say
He won't be seeing daddy every day
Those weekly outings never work, you know
Buying gifts and candy, picture shows
They can't replace the man around
Your voice, your touch, your manly sound
I guess the trouble is I love you still
And if it comes to that, I always will
No, please don't cry, it's just too late
Now hurry on, she's waiting at the gate
Loved this song since I was 5 years old when my parents divorced
This song is soo sad, 😢 but I really love the melody!
The sadness of breaking up was never played out more poignantly than here in this wonderful song written and sung by Olivia.
stateofdreams1 I used to hear this song growing up and right now I’m getting divorced and now that I really listen to it it makes sence you are very right this song nails it
L been looking for this song. L really like it.so sad for people breaking up.
This song touched my heart in so many ways. I was lucky, my parents are still deeply in love with each other. As for myself, my ex and I went through a very nasty divorce. She got the children and I got the bills. I used to be bitter about it, but that doesn't do anyone any good. And now my medical practice is going along nicely, I can see her point of view
Interesting reply. It's such a wonderful separation song and I have personally loved it since I was a child. The acoustic guitar has some lovely arpeggio notes that blend so perfectly with the words. Hope life has now shined for you.
Been there done that. The system is horrible to men.
Wow, I'd forgotten about this song. Love it. Thanks for posting it!
My pleasure. I want to invite you and also other Olivia fans to check out " The Olivia Newton John Appreciation Topic (LOL it's on a Elvis website under off topics) " and could lead you to find other gems and rare tv specials. http://www.theelvisforum-phoenix.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=2993
Lovely.
tenniscollector - A sad song but beautifully sung. Thanks for this video...
+tedibair my pleasure. As good a singer that she was (and is), ONJ had her moments as a songwriter too.
This was one of the very, very few songs written by ONJ...a great deal of them she sang were written (or co-written) by her producer John Farrar.
+Shane Spencer she has written many songs on her last 5 cd albums, and i think the entire GAIA album she wrote. she co-writes a lot with AMY SKY. she wrote TALK TO ME on TOTALLY HOT, ROSEWATER on her OLIVIA album in 1972.
+bduhe219 Really! WOW!
@Shane Spencer oi hot the title wrong where ROSEWATER came from, but it's MUSIC MAKES MY DAY, you can get all of her older albums on amazon, or ebay. look up ROSEWATER on youtube. it really is a rather complex arrangement and an interesting song about a childhood home.
@Shane Spencer oh...don't forget "tTHE DOLPHIN SONG on PHYSICAL. it was the b-side of the single PHYSICAL.
No, I didn't.
Love this song.. But just brings back bad memories 😢
+Fernando Layton Same here, I used to play this on my guitar to my first born, when his father & I divorced, he then got to know his father after he was grown, at 32 my son was murdered!! I miss him so much!!!!
angelwings1221 I’m sorry it took me so long to reply. But I understand now how hard it is to lose a child, I am very sorry for your loss, the first time I commented on the this song I had seperated from my wife and today I came back because I am seperated again but this time we are divorcing and the kids though they are not mine by blood or legally I love them very much and can relate to this song
Was a fan of OLJ from the early days and always loved this one , great lyrics .
i REMEMBER THIS SONG! AWESOME!
I always thought that too. I think it's John Farrar that is behind the strings on this one. So wonderfully melodic.
The guitarist that accompanied her early work is wonderful too.
This was also on "If You Love Me Let Me Know". Very poignant song.
