Old Crow Medicine Show - Down Home Girl Lyrics

Well I swear your perfume, baby, is made out of turnip greens
Every time I kiss you girl, it tastes like pork and beans

Even though you're wearing those uptown high heels
I can tell from your giant step you've been walking through the cotton fields

Ohhhhhh you're so down home girl

Every time you monkey, child, it takes my breath away
Well, every time you move like that, girl, I got to get down and pray
Girl, you know that dress you're wearin' made out of fiber glass
Every time you move like that, girl, I got to go to Sunday mass

Ohhhhhh you're so down home girl

I'm going to take you to the muddy river and push you in
So I can watch the water roll on down your velvet skin
I'm gonna take you down to New Orleans, down in Dixie land
So I can watch you do the second line with an umbrella in your hand

Ohhhhhh you're so down home girl

Old Crow Medicine Show Down Home Girl Comments
  1. C.... W....

Y'all are obviously foreign but you just sound fantastic

  2. K.... G....

The older man dancing is Jerry Leiber, he wrote the song for the Rolling Stones in 1965. A little trivia.

  3. M.... ....

It's like the one of those early 70s bands time warped to the present. They are so badass!

  4. J.... S....

    "The Sex Pistols..." :-)

  5. J.... Z....

    12 year old YouTube video

  7. g.... u....

them new yorkers dont have the time to sit and listen to some fine tunes.so so sad. i never will go there.

  8. E.... L....

very original song performed by The STONES in the early 60's! awesome

    E.... L....

I was thinking of how little it resembled Nazareth's cover...

    E.... L....

Down Home Girl” was written by Jerry Leiber and Artie Butler and first recorded by New Orleans based Alvin “Shine” Robinson on the Red Bird Records in 1964, before the Stones covered it.

  9. B.... O....

oh yes this is good music!!

  10. W.... ....

Fuck. Me. But Ketch is effin' hot.

  11. M.... L....

This made that old man's day

  12. D.... D....

I'm familar of this song recorded by The Stones. This version has a nice feel to it.

  13. N.... S....

    Dust on the Bottle

  14. G.... T....

Are they the sex pistols?? What a moron!! Of course they are not! They´re The Ramones! How else could you tell? lol

  15. C.... T....

Nice!!!  Clearly they had a sharp Creative Director on set.

  16. n.... p....

    Nice 60's vibe. Hot.

  18. L.... L....

Got to be the Sex Pistols! he-he

    L.... L....

+Larry Lyons You can tell just by looking at them lol...

  19. t.... R....

My friend Bobby BUmar rips a 6 string banjo just like that one and makes it sound   OH  so sweet.

  20. S.... M....

    That cop, lol...
I bet if he didn't show up  until 1/2 way thru the performance (around 2:05 ) he would have been far too scared to approach, muchless disband, these guys, because Ketch standing there playing perfect Bob-Dylan-esque blues-harp rolls, so aggressively, would have put such fear into the heart of that policeman, he would have contracted heart palpitations and run back to the prescient, crying!
    ...Slink away, boys......slink away!

God Bless The Old Crow Medicine Show, if they aren't just angels disguised as humans, that is, and i'm pretty sure they are, because how else could mortals make such divine goddamn music?!
Well, dude, we just don't know...

  21. D.... G....

lol, the Sex Pistols? They Love Bob Dylan.

  22. C.... S....

    Awesome band!

  23. k.... ....

    What key harp is that?

  24. L.... D....

Check out the original by Alvin Robinson, if you can find it. Just as good, but different!

  25. L.... B....

    love......

  26. S.... A....

best Old Crow line up there ever was!

  27. o.... ....

I'm hearing Stones, Beatles & Nitty Gritty Dirt Band

    o.... ....

@oldenmcgroen Don't recall the Beatles or the Dirt Band doing this. Did I miss something?

    o.... ....

Funny!  Ok, let me be more specific for those that don't get it.  I'm hearing ELEMENTS of the Beatles, Stones & Dirt Band.  I'm hearing INFLUENCES from Beatles, Stones and Dirt Band.  Capice?  Tell me the harp at 1:30 isn't a Beatles riff.  Tell me the laid back bluesy feel isn't early 60's British rock.

    o.... ....

@oldenmcgroen Almost a straight lift from the Stones second album version from 1964 with a wee smattering of 'Love me Do' harp thrown in. :-)

    o.... ....

Not familiar with the song.  I was 4 years old in '64. I was simply listening to the song and heard similarities that I mentioned above.  And yes, the "Love Me Do" lick on the harp is what I was referring to regarding the Beatles riff.

    o.... ....

    oldenmcgroen a

  28. J.... A....

Willy Watson old crow are so much less without the man!!!!!

    J.... A....

He had the best voice of the whole group BY FAR. I still love the band but they’re not the same.

  29. C.... K....

how cool would it be to walk down the street and see old crow preforming.

    C.... K....

I know right I love the sex pistols.... lol

    C.... K....

Carl Kraft That it would. I met them about 8 years ago after a concert, I'll never forget about it.

    C.... K....

I saw them way back in 2001 on the street in Bristol,Tn they were young and wild but man could they play even back then. They had a real live old timey string band sound to it back then. I remember a few years later seeing wagon wheel music video on TNN and I instantly recognized them and knew they were gonna be recognized worldwide eventually

    C.... K....

    Carl Kraft too cool indeed.

  30. A.... M....

What am I? The bad guy?

  31. M.... C....

Most people don't know this is a Rolling Stone cover.

    M.... C....

Which was a cover of Alvin Robinson.  Talent recognizes talent.

    M.... C....

Matt Crum Dust on the Bottle

    M.... C....

Matt Crum the Stones version has the best three notes ever played in a row...

No lie. That’s a fact. Not sure if it was Jones or Richards, but if you know the Stones version you’ll know what I’m talking about :)

    M.... C....

Mmmm check out the Rainbow Girls cover. Such harmonies!

    M.... C....

As someone already said it was Alvin Robertson was first but covered by many people.,
    https://youtu.be/omnkh2OTtAk

  32. R.... S....

One of the best songs ever by one of the best bands ever!

  33. R.... R....

Such badass, keep doing what you do.

  34. C.... R....

    love it

  35. R.... Z....

    right on

  36. J.... b....

Always loved this song; love it more now!!!

  37. Y.... D....

My little uncle was able to make the most beautiful pole dancer I’ve ever seen fall in love with him as he used the Cupid Love System (Google it). I wish I’d been pleased for him but I wish a nice-looking individual would fall for me. I am exceptionally envious. Does that mean I’m a bad human being?

  38. c.... ....

    They're still clueless.

  39. j.... ....

It's actually an old New Orleans song...

  40. C.... S....

I watch this video for their music and for the old gentleman's comment at the end.....

  41. S.... P....

busking is the funnest thing ever!

  42. J.... A....

there is debate over the fact that the stones recorded it 2 weeks before alvin did tho i prefer his version

  43. I.... D....

    damn them sex pistols!

  44. M.... ....

The lead singer and critter are from Virginia, and they play Southern music. They are showing those Yankees something

  45. m.... ....

hell ya mean its not the sex pistols lol

  46. M.... ....

    just look at them

  47. E.... B....

First recorded in 1964 by Alvin Robinson. Written by Jerry Lieber and Art Butler. Pure New Orleans soul.

  48. F.... ....

They formed in Ithaca (not NYC), moved to Boone, NC and then to Nashville. Even though they formed in NY, they have spent most of their time as a band Nashville (so thats where people consider they are from, 13 years In Nashville vs 1 year in Ithaca). But who cares where they are from? People need to stop perpetuating the whole North/South thing.

  49. F.... ....

no it isn't... you may have been joking, but had to say it just in case...

  50. J.... C....

Love this ! It's so NY and So Americana .This is our Music folks !

  51. J.... H....

Too bad I've been missing out on these guys so long. No more

  52. a.... w....

the music is somewhat classic cajun-style. I very much enjoyed this music!

  53. A.... m....

    Great song....................

  54. Y.... ....

that shot of the guy carrying his stand up bass across the street is just so awesome

  55. B.... ....

Great track off of "The Rolling Stones No.2" 1965

  56. d.... ....

heard he wanted to spend more time with his family

  57. l.... c....

Willie should have stayed with OCMS. Old Crow is still amazing without him, but Willies voice can't be replaced. Regardless OCMS will push forward, maybe Willie will find out what he's looking for OR maybe he'll be like critter and come back after a few years.

  58. j.... ....

they fired willie or he is jus off doin his own shit...?????
    \

  59. p.... ....

    great stones cover

    p.... ....

Down Home Girl” was written by Jerry Leiber and Artie Butler and first recorded by New Orleans based Alvin “Shine” Robinson on the Red Bird Records in 1964., before the Stones covered it.

  60. D.... ....

No its not. They covered Alvin Robinsons version which was the first version out on wax in 1964... it's on youtube and is by far the best version. Not very hard to find out so why you wrote that its a stones tune is beyond me...

  61. U.... ....

    actually its a coaster's tune

  62. p.... f....

    The harmonica is "I should've known better".....Lennon/McCartney

  63. R.... B....

Sounds like some early Beatles to me !

  64. S.... ....

check out black Sabbaths "the wizard". Pretty good harmonica in that. Or Blues Traveler "hook"

  65. M.... R....

    Critter, rockin' that O's hat.

  66. m.... ....

Stuff like this never happens in my neighborhood...wish it did.

  67. B.... ....

one of the best song's I've ever heard!

  68. J.... S....

love that they represent the orioles!!!!!

  69. M.... ....

damn willie is a hell of a singer

  70. S.... M....

never appreciated the harmonica till I heard this song.

  71. P.... ....

totally believe it, it has the stones feel to it.

  72. A.... B....

Yep. Not originally by the Stones either though.

  73. J.... H....

Cheese & Rice, wish fans of this band would stop asking me if I like the band because of my Phish t-shirt. . . . they sound nothing like Phish and I'm thankful for that. from what i heard so far i dig them but stop comparing them to another band they have their own sound!

  74. J.... ....

31 people don't have a Down Home Girl.

  75. G.... ....

The Stones covered it, but its written by Jerry Leiber and Arthur Butler

  88. S.... ....

    I was just thinking that

  89. b.... ....

Yeah. I remember my dad playing this song on guitar and harmonica and singing. I wonder if the Rolling Stones got it from anyone else.

  90. D.... H....

Does anyone remember this is a Rolling Stones tune?

  91. w.... k....

showin dem yankees how its done<3

  92. g.... ....

Also forgot to mention that OCMS is from Central New York. Ithaca, NY to be exact

  93. g.... ....

I hate when people say New Yorkers suck. People from New York City suck yes, but not New Yorkers in general. I'm from Central New York and we are more country than any of you inbreds down south. That city gives us all a bad name.

  94. d.... ....

This is "old time" music..... It was new a while back. And the old guy was obviously having a great time, looks to be their biggest fan in new york.
