This came out when I had just left my husband. He treated me badly. But this is what he told me (leaving the door open) so this song always made me a little sad. But “Learn to Fly” was out at about the same time and the chorus is similar. So I would turn it up thinking it was that song, but it was this one. I’m glad it was about a cat and that he got back safe.

I think he's saying he's leaving himself open to whatever murderer happens to pop by because he's leaving his door open.

Please tell me that you didn't interpret the word "murder" in "murder or a heart attack" to mean the missing cat potentially murdering the narrator.  Cat's can't murder humans.  We all can agree on that, right?  The narrator is implying that by leaving the back door open in the hops that the missing cat will return, a human (not a cat) prowler could enter through the open back door (for the cat) and kill him.

@BODLAW1 Yeah, you're mostly right. Rhett didn't mean that the cat could kill him, but that doesn't put away the fact that cats have killed humans before. It doesn't happen very often, but it's possible.

I think by leaving the back door open he becomes vulnerable to an intruder, but he does it anyway incase the cat comes back, mate.
