Oh Hellos, The - Like The Dawn Lyrics

I was sleeping in the garden when I saw you first
He'd put me deep, deep under so that he could work
And like the dawn you broke the dark and my whole earth shook
I was sleeping in the garden when I saw you

At last, at last
Bones of my bones and flesh of my flesh, at last

You were the brightest shade of sun I had ever seen
Your skin was gilded with the gold of the richest kings
And like the dawn you woke the world inside of me
You were the brightest shade of sun when I saw you

And you will surely be the death of me
But how could I have known?

A woman singing from the perspective of Adam is super cool and interesting

  2. N.... T....

For some reason, this sounds like it could be the story of Eve and Lilith falling in love. Now it's stuck in my head and I can't stop thinking about that concept...

    N.... T....

I absolutely adore this concept oml

  3. M.... m....

im not sorry about life anymore after I heard this song I'm thankful

Love this song and I love how much the music builds up the lyrics.

I’m listening to this in 2019, and I’m reading through the comments. I have some thoughts. First of all, I don’t believe the Bible is meant to be taken literally all the time, but that’s okay because I like to read the Bible like a blending of history, mythology, symbolism, metaphor, and truth. Mankind created the Bible, and the only thing standing between believers recognizing that it’s fundamentally flawed because of that is the idea that the Bible was written “by Men infused with the Holy Spirit” or “guided by God.”

Someone asked something like “why didn’t God make Eve from dust like He did with Adam in the story? Why is it necessary for Eve to be derived from Man?”
To which I reply this: maybe this bones from my bones, flesh from my flesh instance is a romanticized explanation of the scientific process of Mitosis. Have you ever considered that the creation story in genesis might convey some idea about biology and evolution after all?
The fact that Eve was made specifically from Adam’s rib is irrelevant. It’s about one part separating from another part to form a distinguishable entity, but bound to the other in identity as “human.”

The fact that Adam is a man and Eve is a woman in the story is irrelevant, because the man in the story taking precedence over the woman is only a reflection of the culture of whoever wrote the story. Much like how God in the Old Testament is depicted as a wrathful, jealous God while in the New Testament He’s depicted as a stern, but kind and forgiving deity.

Thanks for the lyrics! After listening to their NPR Tiny Desk Concert, I think I have the ending lyrics which are unclear on the recording:

Well I was sleeping in the garden
And like the dawn you broke the dark
Well I was sleeping in the garden
    Bones of my bones

  16. A.... T....

Isn't this about giving birth? My doctor had to knock me out to get my kid out!

    The bowels:

    Psalm 46:5
5 God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early.

    Mark 13:35
35 “Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back—whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or at dawn.

    Wisdom
    10
For those who keep the holy precepts hallowed will be found holy,
and those learned in them will have ready a response.*
    11
    Desire therefore my words;
long for them and you will be instructed.
    12
    Resplendent and unfading is Wisdom,
and she is readily perceived by those who love her,
and found by those who seek her.
    13
    She hastens to make herself known to those who desire her;
    14
one who watches for her at dawn will not be disappointed,
for she will be found sitting at the gate.

    2 Peter 1:19-21
19 We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:
20 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.
21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.
    ...

    Gospel of Truth
Thus, they were ignorant of the Father, he being the one whom they did not see. Since it was terror and disturbance and instability and doubt and division, there were many illusions at work by means of these, and (many) empty fictions, as if they were sunk in sleep, and found themselves in disturbing dreams. Either (there is) a place to which they are fleeing, or without strength they come (from) having chased after others, or they are involved in striking blows, or they are receiving blows themselves, or they have fallen from high places, or they take off into the air, though they do not even have wings. Again, sometimes (it is as) if people were murdering them, though there is no one even pursuing them, or they themselves are killing their neighbors, for they have been stained with their blood. When those who are going through all these things wake up, they see nothing, they who were in the midst of all these disturbances, for they are nothing. Such is the way of those who have cast ignorance aside from them like sleep, not esteeming it as anything, nor do they esteem its works as solid things either, but (rather,) they leave them behind like a dream in the night. [The knowledge of the Father, they value as the dawn]. This is the way each one has acted, as though asleep at the time when he was ignorant. And this is the way he has , as if he had awakened. {and} Good for the man who will return and awaken. And blessed is he who has opened the eyes of the blind.

    Jubilees
    2. 1 For on the first day He created the heavens which are above and the earth and the waters and all the spirits which serve before Him--the angels 2 of the presence, and the angels of sanctification, 3 and the angels [of the spirit of fire and the angels] of the spirit of the winds, 4 and the angels of the spirit of the clouds, and of darkness, and of snow and of hail and of hoar frost, 5 and the angels of the voices 6 and of the thunder and of the lightning, 7 and the angels of the spirits of cold and of heat, and of winter and of spring and of autumn and of summer, 8 and of all the spirits of His creatures which are in the heavens and on the earth, (He created) the abysses and the darkness, eventide (and night),[ and the light, dawn and day, which He hath prepared in the knowledge of His heart]. 3. And thereupon we saw His works, and praised Him, and lauded before Him on account of all His works; for seven great works did He create on the first day.

    Psalm 160
1 The LORD is great and holy, the holiest for generation after generation. 2 Majesty goes before Him, and abundance of many waters comes after Him. 3 Loving-kindness and truth surround His face; truth, judgment, and righteousness are the pedestal of His throne. [4 He divides light from the darkness, and He establishes the dawn by the knowledge of His heart.] 5 All His messengers sang when they saw it; for He showed them that which they had not known. 6 He crowns the mountains with fruit, with good food for all the living.
7 May the Lord of the earth be blessed, along with His power; for He establishes the world by His wisdom. 8 He stretched out the heaven by His understanding, and brought forth wind from His stores. 9 He made lightnings for the rain, and raised mist from the end of the earth.

    Sirach 24
30 I also came out as a brook from a river, and as a conduit into a garden.
31 I said, I will water my best garden, and will water abundantly my garden bed: and, lo, my brook became a river, and my river became a sea.
32 [I will yet make doctrine to shine as the dawn], and will send forth her light afar off.
33 I will yet pour out doctrine as prophecy, and leave it to all ages for ever.
34 Behold that I have not laboured for myself only, but for all them that seek wisdom.

    Odes of Solomon
    Ode 41
1 All the Lord’s children will praise Him, and will collect the truth of His faith.
2 And His children shall be known to Him. Therefore we will sing in His love:
3 We live in the Lord by His grace: and life we receive in His Messiah:
4 For a great day has shined upon us: and marvellous is He who has given us of His glory.
5 Let us, therefore, all of us unite together in the name of the Lord, and let us honour Him in His goodness,
6 And let our faces shine in His light: and let our hearts meditate in His love by night and by day.
7 Let us exult with the joy of the Lord.
8 All those will be astonished that see me. For from another race am I:
9 For the Father of truth remembered me: He who possessed me from the beginning:
10 For His bounty begat me, and the thought of His heart:
    11 And His Word is with us in all our way;
    12 The Saviour who makes alive and does not reject our souls-;
13 The man who was humbled, and exalted by His own righteousness,
    14 The Son of the Most High appeared in the perfection of His Father;
    15 And light dawned from the Word that was before time in Him;
16 The Messiah is truly one; and He was known before the foundation of the world,
17 That He might save souls for ever by the truth of His name: a new song arises from those who love Him. Hallelujah

God damn it, I did not come here for judgements and debates, just post the damn lyrics at the top.

    How I met beautiful songs:
I searched for A beautiful world by Tim Myers
Comes and Goes by Greg Laswell was recommended
Then when I played it The Oh Hello's Hello My Old Heart was recommended
I played it, then I found the band Sleeping at Last band which has originally 3 members and now left with one, Ryan O' Neal.
I am binge watching Sleeping at Last videos. Ryan' s lyrics, use of instruments, sounds, are treasure.

  23. B.... K....

It’s so good, I can’t describe what feeling I’m feeling right now

  24. M.... F....

This seems like a companion piece to Hozier's "Like real people do" !! Both songs are incredible :)

  25. J.... D....

    Crying like a baby haha

  26. A.... t....

Despite some obvious parallels to Christianity I don't think of the band as particularly non-secular. There are many ways to take their songs and almost none are in your face religious.

  28. A.... M....

To me, this song describes the frailty of human love as it was experienced in the very first human relationship - and every one after that.

Our beloved appears as the brightest shade of sunlight we've ever seen. We come alive at the delight of intimacy with someone made of the same stuff that we are. Finally, thank God, we are not alone in our being.

Then, in most relationships, there is the painful separation, the fall from grace that follows. That line, 'And you will surely be the death of me, but how could I have known?' - that sends shivers up my spine. It's the saddest musical moment I think I've ever experienced. We've all felt the death of intimacy and the disappointment of taking our beloved down from the pedestal.

The Adam and Eve story is an archetype - and this song is so powerful - because it flows through every one of us like blood. But that's why we need music like this - to give us the greater comfort of knowing that we all share this struggle for companionship and wholeness.

    A.... M....

    Good explanation. I like it!

    A.... M....

I think your missing a significant concept in Christian thought, which is the death of the self for the sake of being reborn to something much greater. Yes, the spouse will be the death of your current self. But you'll find new life in that union that's greater than anything you could have known alone.

    A.... M....

    Does Not Exist yes

    A.... M....

Now what's all this we business? I'm an unlovable bastard and as such despite being 21 I had my first kiss like 3 weeks ago and then never saw the guy again

  29. E.... L....

    This song is awesome live

  30. P.... E....

All of your songs are magic.

  31. Z.... S....

I know this is a biblical song but when I first heard it all I could think about was my fiancée. We’re 5 months out from our queer handfasting day, been together for just over three years. The first time we kissed was definitely an “at last” moment for me. Finally the perfect person for me. She’s everything I ever wanted in a partner and whenever I see her this song pops in my head.

  32. H.... W....

It reminds me of Joan of Arc.

  33. c.... ....

Lol sounds a little like the ost of gris

  34. F.... F....

I’m like the opposite of a Christian tbh (Wiccan, I’ve quickly learned Christians don’t like witches lmao. But hey no harm no foul) but hey, good music is good music. Still my favorite band probably ever

  35. E.... C....

  36. O.... -....

I love this song and all the positivity in the comments— so wholesome.

  37. v.... ....

This song is permanently tied to a trip I took to alaska where I listened to it exclusively. They weren’t tied because of a reason, just coincidence. But I think it kind of works. It’s about being human, raw, and not making excuses for it. It’s about passion, and the truth. The pulse of life. The promise of meaning. Shucking off the layers of social training that facilitate the word-bound world of success. Anyway, it just makes me think someday, things might be different, and better.

It didn't occur to me that this was a religion based song until I read through the comments. I though it was simply a beautiful love song. Either way, even though I am not religious, this is still a beautiful song. Love in it's purest form.

    s.... ....

Same here! I wasn't really listening to the words, and now that I know them I'm still having an eargasm nonetheless. 10/10.
