Ochs, Phil - Here's To The State Of Richard Nixon Lyrics

Here's to the state of Richard Nixon
Where underneath his borders
The Devil draws no lines
If you drag his muddy rivers
Nameless bodies you will find
And the fat trees of the forest
Have hid a thousand crimes
And the calendar is lying
When it reads the present time

Oh here's to the land you've torn out the heart of
Richard Nixon: find yourself another country to be part of

And here's to the schools of Richard Nixon
Where they're teaching all the children
That they don't have to care
All the rudiments of hatred
Are present everywhere
And every single classroom
Is a factory of despair
There's nobody learning
Such a foreign word as "fair"

And here's to the laws of Richard Nixon
Where the wars are fought in secret
Pearl Harbor every day
He punishes with income tax
That he don't have to pay
And he's tapping his own brother
Just to hear what he would say
But corruption can be classic
In the Richard Nixon way

And here's to the churches of Richard Nixon (and Billy Graham)
Where the cross once made of silver
Now is caked with rust
And the Sunday morning sermons
Pander to their lust
And the fallen face of Jesus
Is choking in the dust
And Heaven only knows
In which God they can trust

And here's to the government of Richard Nixon
In the swamp of their bureaucracy
They're always bogging down
And criminals are posing
As advisors to the crown
And they hope that no one sees the sights
And no one hears the sounds
And the speeches of the president
Are the ravings of a clown

This is the Mississipi song, just done faster. Some of the lyrics are exactly the same.

  5. B.... M....

Here's to the schools of Donald Trump
Where the class sizes are bursting at the seems
And not a second thought touches on teachers saleries
We're the only thing that matters are the disterict boundaries.

  6. T.... P....

I hope this has been rewritten to what Phil is singing now in Heaven, about Donald Trump......

  7. T.... P....

NIXON INVENTED the War on Drugs out of whole cloth. RIP the Fourth Amendment !!!
Pulled it out of his ass. His aides have recently admitted this, see Youtube.
It was only for eliminating the hippie and black vote, by criminalizing as many as possible and removing their power to vote !!!!!
And now we, the US, have suffered under the Drug War from 1970's up to 2018.
I keep having to take goddamn drug tests for jobs. - - I AM INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY IN A COURT OF LAW.

  8. T.... P....

    Love Phil's tunes....

  9. J.... J....

Nothing has really changed. Different names, different times, same story.

  10. G.... S....

What would he say about Trump? His mind would boggle!

  11. W.... G....

Didn't nixon start the american war on cannabis?

    W.... G....

YES. NIXON INVENTED the War on Drugs out of whole cloth. Pulled it out of his ass. His aides have recently admitted this, see Youtube.
It was only for eliminating the hippie and black vote,
by criminalizing as many as possible and removing their power to vote !!!!!

  12. P.... O....

    >the absolute state of richard nixon

  13. A.... K....

someone should do "here's to the state of donald trump"

  14. w.... ....

I never thought we would have a president who could be worse than Nixon. It's a shame Ochs isn't here to write "Here's to the state of Donald Trump. R.I.P. , Phil.

    w.... ....

    AMEN ! BERNIE in 2020!

    w.... ....

He could just change Nixon to Trump and it would be fine. In fact, use the Mississipi song with all those lyrics and it would work.

    w.... ....

Trump is bad but he'll never be as bad as Reagan was

  15. L.... J....

Here’s to the state of donald trump.

  16. E.... V....

Jsut replace 'Nixon' with 'Trump'. The song is the same

  17. A.... ....

Here's to the State of Liberalism

    A.... ....

yep. need to replace the liberals with some socialists that actually care about people

  18. S.... G....

    I miss Phil Ochs.

    S.... G....

So do we ALL. Sing well in Heaven, Phil !

  19. T.... ....

This is from the double album Chords of Fame from 1976, which is unavailable. Thanks so much!

  20. J.... H....

Just change the name to "Donald  Trump" and it fits perfectly.  Still, after all these years.

    J.... H....

Joe Hackney put in any politicians and it makes sense, Unfortunately.

    J.... H....

Well, the GOP polits have a special disregard for the wishes of the common folk, don't you agree?
    @Logan Anderson

    J.... H....

Thomas Paine yeah, but dems have plenty of recent history of similar shit.

    J.... H....

Exactly. As a matter of fact, use the Mississipi song and put Trump's name in there and it would work.

  21. T.... B....

Here's to the land you've torn out the heart of, Donald Trump find yourself another country to be part of!

    T.... B....

Maybe someone like a Billy Bragg could update it b

  22. E.... B....

The nation of Donald Trump will be far, far worse. Please vote for Hillary Clinton for President.

    E.... B....

Yeah, vote for one bourgie bastard over another! That'll show them!

    E.... B....

Sweetheart, I don't think anyone believes Clinton would have given us the travel ban, deregulated and put Pruitt at the head of the EPA, put a fascist-zealot in charge of the Department of Education, threatened to destroy HUD by slashing block grants or--pulled the US out of the Paris Climate treaty. Please, eat a bag of dicks. You've earned it.

  23. G.... G....

My hero!we sure could use a great artist like Phil today

    G.... G....

we've got a few, there's just not easy to find through the algorithms of itunes/youtube/facebook lol
thom avella on here is an anarchist with good taste in music and a few music recommendation videos, but the ones i've checked out haven't been this revolutionary or political so far, so I'd recommend the podcast Burning Cop Car put out by the SubMedia collective that's an episodic compilation of modern revolutionary music

    G.... G....

    We could use JOE HILL.

  24. s.... ....

You could put George W. Bush in for Nixon and it would be the same song. Maybe change a few words, like 9/11 for Pearl Harbor and tapping his own father instead of brother (yeah, he has a brother, but who cares?).

  25. s.... ....

Who is shouting, "Go home!" at the end?

    s.... ....

    sha11235...Richard Nixon?

    s.... ....

    @Texas Big Shooter No, I know...Mike Stivic.

  26. s.... ....

Today the song could be changed to be about George W. Bush, who makes Nixon look decent.

  27. J.... S....

And here's to the state of Mrs. Clinton..

    J.... S....

More like 'Love me, I'm a Clinton."

    J.... S....

But that neglects the other hypocritical liberals, the Sandersistas.

    J.... S....

Oh how this came to bite you in the ass. Kudos for electing a fascist, just what Phil would have despaired over! Keep fighting those centrist dems so that more neo-nazis can enter the white house, that'll show em!

    J.... S....

I couldn't agree more under normal circumstances - however, I refuse to abide the lesser of two evils. Clinton's ego, and the collective ego of her party, are just as much to blame as those fools with enough of a victim complex to actually vote for Trump. If this country can't learn this lesson, that they will keep spoon feeding us the same Neo-con Vs. Christian Fundamentalist bullshit if drastic action isn't taken, then we deserve a thousand Donald Trumps. This should be a wake up call, I don't know if anyone has stirred.

  28. S.... C....

send him to Hell rather than to any other country , please Phil ! Decades after his death and lies that kicked him out of White House and Oval Office , his SHITY POLITICS of mass incarcaration is still in service !

  29. T.... K....

Phil Ochs was such a badass.

  30. J.... R....

There is just something about this song that really speaks to the human condition.

  31. E.... O....

here's to the schools of Corporate America!

  32. E.... O....

    always enjoy this song

  33. D.... H....

Ochs adapted this from his "Here's to the State of Mississippi."

    D.... H....

Yeah, now I know. I like it better slower with the Mississipi song.

  34. C.... P....

Great update of his own song. Be sure to check out the Facebook group Celebrating Phil Ochs' 75th Birthday and the website Celebrating Phil Ochs.

  35. L.... B....

I'll reiterate what I've said publicly and privately countless times: Ochs is a genius.

  36. L.... ....

Can you imagine what Phil would sing about OBAMA???    I'd give a million to have Phil back and sing us a song about the state of our country today

    L.... ....

    More like Teapublicans

    L.... ....

This is a from three years in the future, Be thankful for the time Obama was
President. A least He was not blowing the DICKtator of our worst enemy.

  37. A.... Q....

I was 12 when Richard Nixon was elected President.  I was 18 - and draft age - when he was deposed. I remember this song as the greatest protest against political protest ever.  Phil Ochs is one of my favorite folkies.

    A.... Q....

Refresh my memory.  Weren't we already out of Vietnam when he resigned? (He wasn't deposed.) Hadn't the draft been ended? The war continued for a bit, of course, but without us. Saigon fell on or about my 19th birthday, but we had been officially out of the war for some time.

    A.... Q....

Allyn Q. Check out ''heres to the state of donald trump''.Same song updated for today agd trumps B.S.

    A.... Q....

Yes, I almost went. I had the physical....

  38. N.... ....

why not make a version of this for Obama, he's funding foreign wars and killing with drones and wants to kill the Constitution

    N.... ....

Unlikely, unless you are talking about calling him out from the left rather than from the right.

    N.... ....

Nixon ordered a secret *carpet bombing* of Cambodia which resulted in the deaths of thousands of non-combatants. The drone campaign in Pakistan caused much suffering in FATA, but it was performed with the cooperation of the Pakistani government and there was an effort to ensure insurgents were targeted. Obama's pulled some crap in his time, but Bush with his PATRIOT act and secret wiretapping set the precedent for violating Americans' right to privacy.

    N.... ....

I'd love to see one about George W. Bush.

    N.... ....

    Eddie Vedder does one,its great

    N.... ....

You wanna hear that, you sing it. Me, I'd like to hear this sung about Donnie boy. I'm surprised no one has done it yet.

  39. A.... H....

This sounds like a faster, more pissed off version of "Here's to the State of Mississippi"

    A.... H....

and i agree it does sound like what it is
    YOU'RE WELCOME

  40. R.... Z....

In the lyric sheet for this song, Ochs subtitled it "The Whore Is Over".

  41. L.... ....

You can swap pretty much every president since Nixon (besides maybe Carter?) in here and it still fits perfectly

    L.... ....

I'd have agreed with you, LordOrlock, if only you hadn't stuck in that plug for Carter, of all people. Maybe he didn't get us into any wars, but then neither did Nixon. He inherited one. Carter was the worst, ever.

    L.... ....

Carter was may have had his issues but he was probably the most honest president we've had. Republicans made his tenure miserable but at least he wasn't an immoral, corrupt, greedy bastard like most of the politicians we elect.

    L.... ....

    But he's not a pro-lifer. That's terrible.

    L.... ....

If only we could. Alas, most post-Nixon presidents don't have four-syllable names: Ford, Bush, Clinton (you can fudge this one by calling him "Billy"), Bush, Obama, and Trump. Really, the only one that fits the meter is Reagan, appropriately enough.

    L.... ....

If only. Alas, the only post-Nixon president with a four-syllable name that fits the meter is Reagan (and maybe Clinton if you call him "Billy").

  42. T.... ....

Here's to the state of Barack Obama! Just substitute Barack Obama every time you hear Richard Nixon and the song is so eerily spot on!

  43. S.... ....

    Vote for WAR!!!! Vote REPUBLICAN!!!

  44. S.... ....

Changing Paul Ryan for Nixon would be far more appropriate. What have the Republicans ever done to help the middle class?

  45. T.... S....

As horrible as Nixon was he was more concerned with working people far more than Obama or Clinton. I think changing Obama for Nixon and the song is as appropriate now as it was 40 years ago. God help us!

  46. N.... ....

Richard Perry find yourself another State to be part of
    --a pissed off Texan

  47. j.... ....

This brings back memories:I first heard Phil make this change to the lyrics of "Here's to the State of Mississippi" at a Vietnam protest in Washington in the Spring of 1970. Phil Ochs always fought the good fight, and great honor is due to his memory. As for Richard Nixon, may he rot in Hell. I'm sure that, in the last month, he's had to move over to make room for Margaret Thatcher.

  48. j.... o....

Egad we have a problem I could replace Margaret Thatcher in the theme but it's such
    a great tune I can't.

  49. b.... c....

Well, it was actually Khrushchev who solved the Cuban missile crisis, and Kennedy attacked as many countries as Bush did. Anything about the Gore administration is obviously speculative, but he was firmly on the corporate right wing of the Democratic Party, so..

  50. b.... c....

    Or before Kennedy. Or Kennedy.

  51. B.... E....

What a sad loss when Phil passed from this world. We still need him.

  52. t.... ....

This could really apply to any president since Kennedy

  53. t.... ....

    Tricky Dicky!

  54. H.... T....

Ya kidding me no comment on this , go watch Janet Jackson. Help. This is special Hear it. and listen.
