Oberst, Conor - Common Knowledge Lyrics
He's my friend but he's no friend to me
Ask him why and he'll tell you casually
Washed up, bitter, broke and busted
Backstabbed everyone he trusted
Says he sees what no one else can see
To chase that fatalistic comet
And die young in the dark - that's poetry
But it was not to be
It was not for me
He's always sad but I've never seen him cry
When he comes to sure he'll apologize
Find his car assess the damage
Still drunk but he likes a challenge
Holds onto his mind just like a kite
Fill you with some common knowledge
Things when we were young we never tried
Just figured we had time with such a long life
Money clips and alligator shoes
One more dance and he's in that champagne room
Where she moves like a chocolate fountain
Pouring, spilling all around him
Makes him wonder what else she could do
Feelings that cannot be proven
Trust me you'll see my aim is true
I did this all for you
I've suffered long for you
So many times he tried to play it straight
Worked and worked until his body ached
But a brand new life can lose its luster
Troubles tend to find each other
Call it luck or you can call it fate
But either way it's how it happened
Not the life that you imagined
Some will say you're brave
Some will say you ain't

Money clips, alligator shoes ❤️
lol doesn't he look like a chris lilley character at 1:13
watching this made me realise singers have their own flow and ad libs similar to in rap
Wonder if conor could do a non ironic song ft migos that works?
Raindrops, drop tops (drop top)
Smokin' on cookie in the hotbox (cookie)
Fuckin' on your bitch she a thot, thot, thot .
just found my own comment from ONE SINGLE WEEK ago, no memory writing it, no idea wtf i was talking about, it's left me totally bamboozled.
i must have been soooooo high
Nice statue. I'm glad you drank it before you broke it.
The tears
Is this about his brother? I am confused.
Spankeedee no the song is about himself.
Oh how I loathe being a fan boy. Fuck it
Elliott’s Ghost ? 💔
Conor I absolutely adore you. I’m stuck on your mind and would travel around the world to get a chance to shake your hand. To thank you for all you’ve spoken, sung and the beautiful music you’ve brought into this world.
Just hoping you’ll read this one day and hopefully you’ll see/know deep down in your beautifully tortured heart that you were never alone in your feelings. You always had me, feeling better, empathizing with your pain and suffering. Beauty has come from the things you went through. The way your life went. Although I don’t know your exact pain I do feel that you know my pain. My respects and sad heart goes out to you Conor. My imaginary friend, Forever ♾
I promise. I’m here for you.. if you want or need.
I had a wish as a young man to be a better writer than you. You were it. The one i wanted to be as good as.
You have rough edges Connor but I like you. Stop jumping on stages that Ian felice is on and we're good.
Cut your hair ya hippy!
This is my favorite music video
My all time favorite song
timeless song. .legendary work
It's common knowledge that instahax0r is the only functioning instagram hack tool, and yes it should be apparent to every one that this video is fake as hell! You can get instahax0r on google :)
Айдай Акылбекова what?😂
this is how I use all my 4 gig lol totally what better way than Con? check out his cover btw papa was a rodeo!
"I've suffered long for you.."
Look at that fuckin wig
from the land of music videos, there is beauty in thought of twenty twenty-four and a lack in desire for outward appearance - regarding hairstyles at least, for me, that was sometime in the late nineties, branded - as well as the reveal that saddle creek might be nothing more than a warner bros affiliate, proving and providing i suppose, all the importance of glassjaw and so then maybe the reveal is on finding the character-form version of sylvester the cat for tweety to arienette and hilarity concerning jeff and wilco
Conor I'd like to thank you for booking a show at The Paper Tiger here in San Antonio, Texas. It's been quite a while since I saw you play in Omaha, NE. I heard the news last night from a bar tender at The Mix. a Bar across the street from The Paper Tiger here on St.Mary's Street. Just letting you know I will be there along with as many people I can drag along to come. It was an honor to watch you grow up in Omaha through your bands wherever I saw you at The Cog, Sokol Hall or where ever through your bands like Commander Venus, Solo stuff, or Bright Eyes. I never got to see you play in The Desaparecidos when I lived in Omaha for the 26yrs. I was there. Well Cheers and thanks for booking the show. San Antonio is kind of an untapped market for music I hope you take the time to check the scene out on youtube before you come. I suggest a band called "War On Sunday" also a musician named Ila Minori is pretty amazing I've known Erica almost since I got here from Omaha 4yrs. ago.
SlowDown101
wow that's really weird
Bahahahahahaaaaaa
Wonderful lyrics.
i could be wrong but this is the antithesis to eminem rapping about only getting "one shot" on about predestination and plans and paths, a spouse selected at birth, that not hitting on the correct note at the right moment makes all the rest of life meaningless and nihilistic, a million dead bodies aimlessly roaming space
Mathew Richwalski .
@Transhuman 5000 That's so Mathew Richwalski
Beautiful song.
He hasn't uploaded a You Tube video for 2 years. Doesn't he understand that You Tube channel statistics are somehow related to your talent and/or worth?
he took time off for personal reasons
@Laurie Martin I was clearly being facetious.
StephenAndrew777 shut up
Personal reasons? You mean being publicly accused of rape?
It was a fucked up false accusation, but thats why.
The setting and concept of this video appear to be simillar to that of One Direction's Perfect music video .
how dare you. :0
dude wtf r u high ?
It's the other way around if anything
Phamphellya Darvency lmfao😂
His music the the best. So subtly angsty. Like there's a lot of passion and hidden meaning
how u doin conor?
Holy shit. I can feel.
Wonderful message...and your style of singing is so pleasant to listen to. You remind me of Jim Croce.
Happy birthday, Conor.
I wish he'd quit smoking.
+sortedtales He is smoking an E-cigarette.
sortedtales no
Jesus Christ, this just ripped my heart out of my chest...

black keys attack & release poster in the background
such an underrated song off UDM
love respect this man
It's nice to see Conor with his wife, after four years of keeping her hidden.
He didnt keep her hidden. She has her own stuff. Corina oberst is has nothing to do with you. Shes a sweet, talented woman. God damn you are hungry.
@kile Jungst God damn, you're overreacting. Jesus fucking Christ.
another good one @conoroberst ... I've always let myself interpret your lyrics in a personal way, which is maybe how you'd prefer, this one in particular seemed an easy connection... But then again, it seems you never release a song that I can't relate to without relative ease... so thanks for that man... As long as you keep making music I'll listen brother
is there a reference to big star in the lyrics?
I know it's insane to come to this Conor Oberst video and advertise my own music but if you want to go to my channel and listen to it then do it
A song about addiction.
Now I am older and living away from Omaha I respect Conor Oberst a lot more. I thank you. Wish you'd come down to San Antonio and play though. I understand it's a bit further south than Austin but you will still get a lot of people coming to your show. Peace to you brother.
I love this song. Excellent work Conor. <3
makes me cry silently inside :)
Truly amazing.
"She moves like a chocolate fountain...pourin'...spillin'...all around him...and he wonders..what else she can do." wow Conor, what a great line! Thanks for another great song. JKL
u never disappoint me conor. love U baby girl.
Hahahah
Courtland Obama
Wow. This video is so powerful. I'm in tears, its just showing so much of Conor and the way he used to be. This entire album feels like a reflection and his improved state of mind. The video even bring the words better into focus about what hes singing. I'm so happy this is a series and i hope it continues so there can be a resolution to everything.
Laura Kamienski im a fan of Connor since 2004ish and im curious as to what you meant by the he used to be
He's my friend but he's no friend to me
Ask him why, he'll tell you casually
Washed up, bitter, broken, busted
Backstabbed everyone he trusted
Says he sees what no one else can see
And if I had half his guts I'd want it
To chase that fatalistic comet
Die young in the dark, that's poetry
But it was not to be, it was not for me
He's always sad but I've never seen him cry
When he comes to, sure he'll apologize
Find his car, assess the damage
Still drunk but he likes the challenge
Hold on to his mind just like a kite
But a good strong win can keep you honest
Fill you with some common knowledge
Things when we were young we never tried
Just figured we had time with such a long life
Money clips, alligator shoes
One more dance, he's in that champagne room
She moves like a chocolate fountain
Pouring, spilling all around him
Makes him wonder what else she can do
How bittersweet is love's illusion
Feelings that cannot be proven
Trust me, you'll see, my aim is true
I've done this all for you, I've suffered long for you
So many times he's tried to play it straight
Worked and worked until his body ached
But a brand new life can lose its lustre
Troubles tend to find each other
Call it luck or you can call it fate
But either way it's how it happens
Not the way that you imagined
So just go out with a bang like Hemingway
Some will say you're brave
Some will say you ain't
"it's kind of a cruel world to bring someone innocent into" yet he still has kids...
you sure?
i don't think he does. i just listened to his interview with Marc Maron on the WTF podcast, and he says the same thing about not wanting to bring life into a world he sees as kind of fucked up. i'm paraphrasing.
Fairly sure he does not have children.
To be expected. Nice. Nothing less.
What city is this?
I love the feel these two music videos give off, futuristic, kinda creepy with the end off that voice, and questionable. "The event" causes the watcher to question what is going to happen in the future. Then boom the song starts, conor has such a brilliant mind. I'll be listening to his music for years to come.
sounds like Elliot Smith
Moodys Point not at all. Can you share a song reference that has similarities to this track ? An Elliot Smith song that is?
Brilliant song. I typically don't like music videos but these are vague enough to still let you think up your own context. Well done!
Also, I really hope he continues with the music videos for this album, I can't wait to see where this story goes.
i really want to see the other music video that was released on Friday, with the hot air balloon dialect.
I love the part when Oberst cuts his hair. I cant wait to hear him live in October as well ♡
Last bright eyes concert I attended I was arrested soon after
I hope it was awesome
Conor Oberst should be a religion.
@noodraider yup, https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Elite-Cult-Of-Conor-Oberst-Worship/158150737576260. and http://oberstcult.tumblr.com/
how did I not know this was a thing? thank you for showing me the light <3
@steadfastcoward he is more interesting and insightful then any god I've heard of lol.
Hahaha, we are Oberstians :-D
Religion is a scam, it would ruin the beauty that is Conor Oberst.
so beautiful :')
my soul mate <3
ya don't even know him :/ he's more of a private guy, likes making music for people but also keeps to himself mostly..
@Kitty Cat um, i don't think you understand what a soul mate is :/
@Zoidut Studioz i understand that you think you're in love with a person you don't know :/
noun: soulmate
a person ideally suited to another as a close friend or romantic partner.
...and i'm a man btw
He thinks my similar thoughts too :) I wish he knew truly how deeply he is appreciated and respected. He is noble and brave and sweet. It's that feeling of like... I'm so proud of you. And so impressed and blessed to have something that helps me not feel crazy
niel youngsy digg
And is it just me, or this song was longer? I watched it about 2 hours after add it there and as far as I remember this vid lasted almost 7 minutes, and at the end he was sitting again in cap, near the window?
yes there was another ending to it where he was talking about hot air balloons
@Diane Rubendall Yeah, hot air balloons, and that they more beautiful than planes! Well I commented this "longer" vid, so it shows on my google+, and when I wanted to watch it, I could, but near the title it was something like a padlock. Today I found out that they canceled this vid. It's really strange. Why they did that?!
I was bummed he didn't play this at his central park show but this video totally makes up for it.
big bright eyes, conor fan but, this fucking video was trash
His smoking is so so so perfect 3:45 . Well, I hate smokers but Conor does it in amazing way and it doesn't really annoy me. Wish, that every smoker will does it in "Conor's way".
Hypocrite
@Ron Swanson Who? Me?
Lmfao dumb fucking comment. “You’re cool at smoking”
Aww, I was so HOPING he'd elaborate on this series. So many things to think about.
There's a teeny tiny bit of this 'invaded world' and the woman talking to him that reminds me of The Host. ....but they would've never referred to humans as kind. I love this song so much; but, I also love that his videos continue the Conor legacy of making you think wayyyy beyond what you're given at face value. ....find all the subtleties, nuances and meanings deeper beneath the surface. :)
Love it!
Seems like a wig!
Babe.
Amazing. Loving this series of videos for "Upside Down Mountain."
Godammit, yes. Great stuff.
I can almost smell the carpet 2:46
