Oberst, Conor - A Little Uncanny Lyrics

You started drinking the Kool-Aid
We were taking the bait
We were talking big talk
Never playing it safe
Looking good as Jane Fonda
On a Vietnam tank
Can't get something for nothing
Have to energize your base

But she was young enough
She was blonde enough
She was about a perfect ten
Had millions of admirers but not a single friend
And it's a, it's a little uncanny what she managed to do
Become a symbol for a pain she never knew

You know old Ronnie Reagan
He was a shoe salesman's son
He got himself in the movies
He impressed everyone
He thought trial by fire
Was America's fate
He made a joke of the poor people
And that made him a saint

But he was tan enough, he was rich enough
He was handsome like John Wayne
And there was no one at the country club
Who didn't feel the same

But it's a, it's a little uncanny
What he managed to do
Got me to read those Russian authors through and through

I miss Christopher Hitchens
I miss Oliver Sacks
I miss poor Robin Williams
I miss Sylvia Plath
Every morning's a desert
Every night is a flood
They say a party can kill you
Well sometimes I wish it would

But I'll get strong enough, I'll be man enough
To keep myself in check
'Cause all my friends that flew to town
Said that's what they expect

But it's a, it's a little uncanny
What they managed to do
Made me admit to things I knew were never true

  13. sean paul

I just watched this on TV,we should jam hahaha

  14. Bulk The Diabetic Fat Man Hogan Chris

he said the perfect ten tye dillinger is the perfect 10

  15. Adam Henry

this is literally the same melody as His Bright Eyes song "Classic Cars"...

    daydrmnation

if you listen closely enough, they're all the same tune really, because it's from the same artist and he has stayed true to himself while exploring different ways of conveying that. listen from beginning to end. on repeat.

    daydrmnation

+daydrmnation you'll be sure to be taken on a ride, but it's nothing unfamiliar.

    Autumn Brown

haha it's really really similar yeah. I still like both songs though.

    Ryan Smith

    It's not even close.

  16. handymandan100

Dang this is on par with John Prine and/or Warren Zevon in cutting satire; nice work Bright Eyes!

    CodyAlushin

Good call. Zevon was one of the best when it came to that tounge-in--cheek stuff that still hit you hard. Conor's killing it too

  17. eman5413

the emotion he puts into the live version gives me such a new perspective on this song he sounds almost pissed off during the chorus i love it,

  18. Aidan bolduc

I could guess which Russian authors he was talking about, but does anyone know specifically which ones he meant? Perhaps via interview?

    Adam Steinmetz

There isn't anything specific that I've read, but I know that fans have speculated on Reddit about the comparison between Oberst's lyrics with Dostoyevski's... So there's that.

    Rory

Aidan bolduc pretty sure he's talking about Marx

    Adam Steinmetz

    Marx is a well-known German, that'd be something I don't think Oberst wouldn't know.

  19. Chasta Rogers

<3 , once my favorite , still my favorite , always my favorite artist. <3 Conor

  20. Test Channel

Anyone have insight on the Reagan/Russian authors line? All I got is that Conor was probably young when Reagan was in office. And with the attention on Russia he got curious and looked into reading the Russian classics. But I don't know what's uncanny about that.

    Anyone?

    Kyle Stallings

Test Channel Theres also a chance he didn't actually read them all that much, rather used the line figuratively to describe how dissent was sewn into him by Regan, idk

    mcmcmcm

Follow his lyrics and interviews and you'll see that Conor's a left-winger and not a liberal. Not all socialists follow some hard Soviet line on art and aesthetics.

    Sleepy Gonzales

All he means is that Reagan's uncanny influence on Conor is that Reagan's association with solidifying capitalism in America ("he made a joke of the poor people and that made him a saint,") made Conor personally become more interested in communism/socialism (Russian authors like Lenin and such)

    Jason K

That's an interesting prism to view it through. Thanks for sharing.

    nyclplaywrite

what's uncanny is how much Reagan preaching to Conor (and America) to hate the Russians, only made Conor read the Russian authors thoroughly -- an irony.
