O'Connor, Sinead - Gloomy Sunday Lyrics

Sunday is gloomy,
My hours are slumberless,
Dearest the shadows
I live with are numberless
Little white flowers will
never awaken you
Not where the black coach
of sorrow has taken you
Angels have no thought of
ever returning you
Would they be angry
if I thought of joining you
Gloomy Sunday.

Sunday is gloomy
with shadows I spend it all
My heart and I have
decided to end it all
Soon there'll be flowers
and prayers that are sad,
I know, let them not weep,
let then know
that I'm glad to go

Death is no dream,
for in death I'm caressing you
With the last breath of my
soul I'll be blessing you

Gloomy Sunday
Dreaming
I was only dreaming
I wake and I find you
asleep in the deep of
my heart dear

Darling I hope that my dream
never haunted you
My heart is telling you
how much I wanted you
Gloomy Sunday.

I would like hear Rob Halford recording this to finalize one day the Judas Priest career. But this is beautiful and is what matters.

Lydia Lunch does the most atmospheric version, I didn't even know it was a Billie Holiday song til I read it on here

I love emilie autumns version better..nice rendition though..check it out...

  7. M.... A....

difficult to see, what i have heard, that she is really a crazy person in Ireland. with this intelligence, makes my heart sink.

  8. S.... B....

very haunting, she sings it beautifuly, but she should have left out that last, fake verse. i much prefer the song without it.

  9. C.... L....

my heart and i have decided to end it all

MUSTAFA HOSNY AJÁMLOM.HUN. EZ EGY VÁG SIKRE MAGYAR.

  11. B.... ....

I always thought this was a Bjork song.

    B.... ....

no, definately not! it was originaly written & sung way back in the 1930s. it was banned from public performance, for decades, because 200 people commited suicide after being inspired to do so by it's tragic words! its good that people ar'nt afraid to sing it anymore because its such a lovely, moveing song.

    B.... ....

I find it hard to believe 200 people killed themselves because of a song... :O

    B.... ....

It's a Hungarian song. most of these people had jumped into The Danube River.

  12. M.... ....

great when you working in autopsy. believe me

  14. K.... F....

le zárul valami ami nem létezet soha.

  15. M.... S....

Don't forget the author of this worldhit - Rezsoe Seress from Hungary

  16. K.... Z....

It's a remake of a Hungarian song from the 1930's, written by Seress Rezső. The song called " the hymn of suicide" ! Seress killed himself in 1968, after he listening to his own song many days before....

  17. K.... G....

I hate all the versions that include the line, "Dreaming. I was only dreaming..." The original Hungarian version did not include the line, and as I've heard the story, the American producers were afraid the song was too depressing, so they required Billie Holiday to add the line. Ruins the sorrowful point of the song ENTIRELY.

    K.... G....

I absolutely agree. It ruins the tragic beauty of the original sentiment and intention.

    K.... G....

I agree. It's sad though because some good versions do include the line, but that line ruins the tone and meaning of the song

  18. K.... F....

félk elveszitjük egymást nem engednek be tége az oldalamra.mi lessz.hogy talákozunk. nem tudom hova irjak a nevedrevagy egy cimre.

  20. K.... F....

ez magyar zene. seres rezsö száma 1940-évekböl.

  21. M.... F....

Perfection. This is, by far, the definitive version.

  22. M.... L....

Ok, everyone knows it's fucking Hungarian.

  23. g.... ....

Chill out Hungarians. It's another version by another artist who gives her own interpretation. Sinead's is quite good. Billie Holliday was good. Bjork - needs getting used to. You Magyars have your own version in your own language, with added lugubriousness. Stay gloomy with that.

But remember - Say No to Suicide.

    g.... ....

lol.... Good, i like the comment!

  24. N.... V....

    Best voice.

  25. V.... T....

  32. B.... G....

Well, the hungarian original song is more sad an morbid. Thats why its called "Suicide" song
    Translation:
On the last sunday, come to me my darling,
There'll be priest, coffin, catafalque, hearse-cloth.
There will be flowers. Flowers and a coffin.
This will be my last journey under trees,
My eyes will be open to see you once more.
Don't be afraid of my eyes, i will bless you in my dead, too.

    B.... G....

Thank you for the transliteral lyrics

    B.... G....

this is saying the same thing. this song is heartwrenching

    B.... G....

The Hungarian original doesn't have the "dreaming, I was only dreaming" part to soften the end, either (it's a pretty crappy shift in tone the English version has IMO)

    B.... G....

Yeah, this is actually following the original English version sung by Billie Holiday. At the time producers didn't want to upset people so they tacked that bit on. This is still a beautiful rendition. Billie Holiday's is probably the most haunting version ever sung. She just had a way of making a song her own and putting her own unique feeling into it.

    B.... G....

This is just as sad and morbid... every time I listen to her version I think of if my girlfriend ever were to die and this is how I would feel....

  33. G.... ....

best version of this song so far! work of art

    G.... ....

    GameOver absolutely !

    G.... ....

    What about Bjork?

    G.... ....

This one and Billie Holiday's version are my favorite versions

  34. S.... P....

Does anyone know if Morrissey was aware of the so called "Hungarian Suicide" song when he wrote Asleep, which is about the very subject of suicide, during his time in the Smiths. The lyrics seems too close "I will feel so glad to go" ?

    S.... P....

Usually suicidal people tend to have the same thoughts so it makes sense that those two songs have similarities.

  35. n.... ....

I thought it was her hairy hand...

    n.... ....

and you're utterly right baby. i agree

    n.... ....

    Haha damn

    n.... ....

    My hand, in my dreams.

  36. W.... K....

I like her version of gloomy Sunday most. Beautiful.

    W.... K....

Try emilie autumn's version..talk about chills..

  37. G.... C....

Hear it hungarian, original version! That's nice, this is NOT! I'm hungarian, I' know and understand!

    G.... C....

sry the real version is horrible.dont feel att.but the original makes me lol.not sad not depressive.every version is better than the hungarian......greetz from the other side of life

    G.... C....

Because you dont understand it. For hungarians it is funny to hear english speaking people trying to translate such a poem (or anything made from us, actually). The english lyrics are nowhere near to the hungarian, nor in atmosphere, nor complexity.

    G.... C....

    @Br1koo maybe baby 😘

    G.... C....

yes, they are. this song makes me feel so sad and depressed but it is very beautiful... it conveys the sorrow and longing and depression the person who wrote it tried to convey... this is the english version.... same difference... these words are very very powerful and depressing. it conveys perfectly the angst and sorrow meant.

    G.... C....

Like most languages its extremely hard to get a 100% literal translation especially in music because it might not go with the tune or sound awkward hence why they change the lyrics slightly its the same when its the other way as well :/

  38. D.... P....

so sad. took my heart and tears fall down

    D.... P....

Daniela Ponce are you fine now??? 😐

  39. m.... ....

let them not weep, let them know that im glad to go

  40. D.... C....

Sinead O'Connor, Elvis Costello and Paul Robeson renditions sound more sincere, they don't try to show off their voices like Sarah Brightman, Sarah McLachlan, Billie Holiday, Emilie Autumn, Diamanda Galas, and its not happy like Heather Nova, Rezso Seress, Matt Forbes.

    D.... C....

+Doc Canoro Billie Holliday trying to show off. Big lol.And Rezso Seress being "happy", big lol again, given he is the author of the song. Sure it sounds happy, lol.

    D.... C....

@InXLsisDeo like if Billie Holiday wouldn't be proud of her voice and didn't wanted to give her best performance, of course she was trying to show off her voice skills.
and you say that I am right about Rezso Seress, it sung a sad song like if it was a happy song, therefore it was sung incorrectly, and no, he is not the author, the author is László Jávor.

    D.... C....

@Doc Canoro No, she wasn't trying to "show off", she was trying to convey emotion and she succeeded perfectly at it; as she is the one who brought us this song out of the obscurity, and still is the reference in the ears of millions of listeners. BTW, she isn't trying here especially, Billie Holliday always sung like that, you obviously don't know her well enough. That you don't like it is your problem, you are the overwhelming minority. And no, please, no, don't assume I said Rezso Seress sung it happily, you  seem to have difficulties reading sarcasm...

    D.... C....

@InXLsisDeo "don't assume I said Rezso Seress sung it happily" "given he is the author of the song. Sure it sounds happy"

  41. s.... m....

    so amazing voice..

  42. b.... t....

defiantly one of the best songs ever composed Hungarian genius

  43. d.... v....

    sibilant

  44. S.... N....

Persze hogy gyönyörű,,,,hiszen az eredeti verzió magyar!!!!!

  45. H.... G....

    <3 LOVE

  46. F.... C....

Sinead is sublime here...ttotally convincing, beautifully sung.

  47. k.... ....

IMHO, the arrangemt of this, Bjork's and Sarah MacGlaughlin's versions have all somehow rendered their versions a tad "commercial"; the voices in their rendition come across as detached as if they are outsiders looking in, rather than insiders giving a voice to the song. They lack the rawness and thus poignancy of the newly-discovered 8 year old voice of Norwegian, Angelina Jordan. It doesn't help that none of these 3 recorded professionals can channel B. Holiday the way young Jordan can. With proper guidance, it is hoped that we will get to enjoy Jordan's profound gift for many years to come and maybe we will witness an Amy Winehouse of the future (sans the substance abuse).

    k.... ....

+kindface There's definitely something sweet, and unexpected in little Angelina's version. But I would not consider her all that special. The depth in Sinead's voice, and her power floor me. I doubt I will ever hear another singer as special as her. Especially not with this song. It's over. No more versions. Well, maybe mine :O)

  48. M.... H....

    Best version.

  49. A.... S....

It is a hungarian music !! Vesszen az összes népnyúzó büdös marx ivadék , akik ugye tudjuk kik

    A.... S....

    +Andor Szuromi kire gondolsz?

  50. P.... ....

The misty, quiet sadness in her voice, so dignified and lofty, evoked the most torrent of feelings in you.

    Sinead O'connor-Nothing Compares to you.

  52. A.... S....

    Istenem!! Ez gyönyörű!!!! :'(

    A.... S....

Andera Szobonya Magyarul az eredeti a legszebb 😊

  53. A.... M....

Diamanda Gallas is the Scariest singger of this song

  54. N.... B....

Sinead does a beautiful cover of this classic song composed by Rezső Seress and published in 1933. So many people have recorded this song, and surprisingly each version has its charm. Bjork recorded a version 18 years after this one. You should check it out -- Bjork's breathy voice with a quasi Big Band arrangement.  A real surprise.

  55. J.... W....

Warto posłuchać interpretacji 8 letniej dziewczynki z Norwegii, Angelina Jordan. Przepięknie śpiewa jazz.

    J.... W....

    Oh, yes!!!

  56. J.... W....

    Prosta forma, a jakże przepiękna!

  57. G.... S....

I don't like this version or that of Billie Hollyday, I dislike the aggregate that a lyrics it's only a dream, change completely the feel of Seress and Javor, the sadness for Hungary previous to the Holocaust.

  58. K.... B....

Beautiful voice, but not blue enough like Billie's version.

  59. b.... ....

WOW. Sinead killed it here. All due respect to Billie Holliday but this version gave me chills and made me feel cold listening to it. She totally sold it to me. I think Holliday's delivery, as much of a legend as she was, had this semi-detached, too-cool-for-school thing going on that took away some of the emotion and genuine sadness this song was meant to have.

    b.... ....

It's funny how interpretations differ.  I find Sinead's version semi-detached and too breathy.   Holliday's version was haunting to me.  This feels beautiful but very bland.

    b.... ....

+Deann Raleigh I agree with Deann.I felt nothing listening to this version.
    Angelina Jordan does it best.

    b.... ....

    +blackroze80 i like elvis costello's better

    b.... ....

actually the original song is of Rezso Seress - Szomoru vasarnap (1925)

    b.... ....

this is perfect, but older people r consumed with nostalgia

  60. A.... B....

This Hungarian composer's song, Seress copper salt --- beautiful and very sad

  61. L.... ....

I want to hear it at my funeral soon :(

    L.... ....

    How did it go?

  62. A.... B....

How is this cover so unpopular? It's perfect! I recall hearing it around ten years ago and spending months trying to find out who sung it, I'm so glad I found out who it was. :3

    A.... B....

Hungarian version is better, trust me. It was originaly written in hungarian. This is good too :)

    A.... B....

I'm aware, I do like it, though I love the gentleness Sinead gives this if you catch my drift. ^^

    A.... B....

this was most well known version in the 1980s, its perfect

  63. M.... P....

Pretty voice... but too much of an echo sound.  I like the old school Billie Holiday version better.

    M.... P....

Something about billies voice that completes this song. It's great.

    M.... P....

Sinead just really isn't that great of a singer. If you really want to hear a haunting arrangement and singer listen to Sarah Brightman :)

  64. F.... ....

    gyönyörű

  65. a.... ....

Whoever pierced her nose did a great job. It's in just the right spot. So many nose piercings are too low, below the crease of the nostril. I know this has nothing to do with the song, but just sayin....

    a.... ....

    Always looks like escaped bogey!

  66. m.... c....

bella version de sinead o conor

  67. l.... ....

The song was written for Hungary, according to the statistics so far
at least 18 celebrities committed suicide, the song heard. beautiful
    song!

  68. Z.... U....

This beautiful song is Hungarian origin. (Song of suicidals)

  69. A.... ....

Angelina Jordan did a nice rendition to this song as well. She has an amazing voice.

  70. V.... G....

    Love it...

  71. S.... ....

I love her version. Has the sadness of Billie Holiday's version but in Sinead's Angelic voice.

  72. M.... W....

    ms holiday would be proud

  73. M.... G....

Michou berlin, thanks so much for sharing this beautiful music with us. Sinead's voice in this song sounds so angelic, wow!! Kudos for Sinead O'Connor specially for the son's author Rezso Seress.

    a.... ....

the "gloomy sunday" is a very nice and very dangerous song. the original song is from Hungary and the gus who maked this song hes name is Rezső Seress. and the original song is calld szomorú vasárnap. Only in Hungary more than 100 people died after when they heard this (I mean the original) song. the original song can give you depressed and apathy and death!!! remember it!!! this english translate is a fucking shit "cause it is not near the original song.. if you will hear the original song word to wordTHEN say that wat ya said...the english versio is just a very very very light versio

  81. P.... B....

Iful girl love me... I knew it had to be too good to be true... And so now I hate my life and I could care less about my sobriety and all I want to do is die because my days are dark and I'm cold and alone and scared and forgotten and broken and destroyed... I hope you have a good laugh as the slug passes through my brain stem opens my skull and sends what's left of my brains out into the room..fuck love fuck god fuck life I'm done...

    P.... B....

I hope you are still alive

  82. P.... B....

Tina...when I found out that you love another, my life ended...it took me till I was 50 to find you..the only girl in whose eyes I could see my beautiful unborn child...I wanted to give you love shelter warmth...fall asleep holding you...wake up looking at your hair laying over your shoulder....in my t shirt...oh Sweetgirl I wasted 30 years stoned...hiding..got sober this spring...found you...loved you...but you were just after the money...now I'm destroyed, shoulda known, why would such a beaut

  83. D.... ....

Why isn't there an Evanescence version of gloomy Sunday? This is bullshit, it's like a world where peanut butter has not met chocolate.

    Bond hubiese muerto.

  97. B.... D....

this isnt the original version because the ending was changed by Billie Holiday to make it more optimistic. Last verse about dreaming is not included in the original version.
