O'Connor, Sinead - Drink Before The War Lyrics

Well, you tell us that we're wrong
And you tell us not to sing our song
Nothing we can say will make you see
You got a heart of stone
You can never feel
You say "oh I'm not afraid - it can't happen to me
I've lived my life as a good man
Oh, no you're out of your mind
It won't happen to me
'Cos I've carried my weight
And I've been a strong man"
Listen to the man in the liquor store
Yelling "anybody want a drink before the war?"
And your parents paid you through
You got a nice big car
Nothing bothers you
Somebody cut out your eyes
You refuse to see
Somebody cut out your heart
You refuse to feel
And you live in a shell
You create your own hell
You live in the past
And talk about war
And you dig your own grave yeah
But it's a life you can save
So stop getting fussed
It's not gonna happen
And you'll cry
But you'll never fall
No, no, no You're building a wall
Gotta break it down
Start again
No, no, no
It won't happen to us
We've lived our lives
Basically we've been good men
So stop talking of war
Cause you know we've heard it all before
Why don't you go out there
And do something useful
Oh listen to the man in the liquor store
He yelling "anybody wanna drink before the war?"
"Anybody wanna drink before the war?"
"Anybody wanna drink before the war?"

  5. awolpw70

There are so many songs like this one that there are no words to describe the power they have awarded to them.

  6. StabbingPrivateMellish

I've been looking for this song ever since I heard it in the movie State Of Grace, which is one of THE most underrated movies I've ever seen.

  7. S K

May her disturbed mind get rest...

  10. Pennine Lad

For 32 years I thought she sang "You creature of hell..." mind you, they were interesting years...

    Genius, and damaged, sadly.

Stay away from the church kids, it'll ruin you.

  11. Peer X

Despite my reaction before, this song is intense.

  12. Peer X

Turning to Moslim. O no nooo. Islam does not belong to Europe !!!

  13. Joshua Howard

For some reason this song reminds me of the Broadway musical version of Les Miserables. Like the song Empty Chairs and Empty Tables

  14. Piotr O

I remember the moment when first time I heard this song and album. It was schocking moment! The power of this music...

  15. Eman Name

    "Your parents paid you through
You got a nice big car nothing bothers you
Somebody cut your eyes you refuse to see
Somebody cut out your heart you refuse to feel.."

    To the peach colored imp..

  16. Troy Jenkins

    Just like I anticipated.
    Her music would be grand
Never listened to any of her stuff before
My last memory of O'Connor was her performance on SNL
She made the pope mad about something.
I think this was in the late 80s
    Enjoying the music
Sinead looks like a terrorified soul.
    Poor girl...
That explains the depth of her music.
    Good stuff

  17. 1965maple

I cry every time I hear this song

  25. _____ Rodenburg

This is basically the world anthem of 2018.

  26. MrDLOC11

Almost at the end of the eighties, with her LOOK & SOUND miss Sinead swept right in & snatched every alternative female wig by shaving hers skinhead - & right from the git wit her brilliant, the very first-'best-alternative-grammy' debut album The Lion & the Cobra. It still sounds so ground breaking, before her 2nd album & commercial break-through/ .Sinead's unique sound was openning doors later for the also excellent Alanis morrissette & delores o' rioradan.....💛💚💔💙

  27. Dirkie N

Who is listening this in 2018 or 2019 !?

Listen to the man in the liquor store" anyone want a drink before the war" there should be a Sinead O'Connor era light years ahead of most people who are " famous " " it won't happen to me" I wonder if there be saying that in 10 years time or not bless the heart of this strong sassy intelligent women who is also suffering like so many others

  59. David Keogh

Heard this song for the first time yesterday and it is stunning,

  60. wolfatnight

just started listening to her..... and I'm almost afraid to ask lest I be attacked with vitriol and venom, as often seems the way on youtube, but - does she purposely shave her head? I don't know that ive ever seen an image of her with hair. Just curious.

wolfatnight she did it in purpose because she expected people to focus on her music instead of her looks, didn't want to be sexualized by music industry

  61. Roger Scott

    She is so damn amazing.

  66. Ahmad Ahmad

    what a great song!

  67. Stephane

    Wahou, it's so good.

  68. iev k

She brings a powerful contemporary, 'soberness' with this older song; that is further testament to her innate and true art, that prove her timelessness .. especially in how her work affects so many people of different eras. phenomenal skill..understanding~~

  69. Peony Farm

    the most misunderstood person ever.

    River Girl

Not misunderstood at all, she quite obviously has borderline personality disorder and although she has suffered a lot she has also been an abusive bitch to her kids and others around her.

    u n i

@River Girl you're entitled to your own opinion, and I respect your right to have an opinion, but your opinion is wrong lol. You tried though.

    Joni Pangrazio

    @River Girl go away

  76. Stoned Dead Forever

i am in love with you my girl

  77. Lori Antonacchio

I don't remember what year I heard her first, but I do know that I immediately went out and bought the CD(?) or was it cassette (who cares...) because I was in utter AWE!!! I literally love every song I have heard her do!! Especially love this one, Troy, Mandika, Jerusalem and I Want Your Hands On Me. Oh HELL, I love every track on this album!!! Jackie (beautiful!), Just Call Me Joe (haunting), Just Like You Said it Would Be (love her screaming voice), Never Get Old (love the spoken word part w/Enya). If you could WEAR out a CD, this would have been literally, ragged on the edges, been scratchy albeit worn down and shiny in places it should not be and probably still be charred and smokey from so much play.....can't say enough (good stuff, wow, I know soooo creative! NOT! ) about this woman. I didn't care that she tore up the Popes pic on SNL, however now (@ my age and wisdom level) can appreciaye the why, she did it. And I agree. I mean I was baptized (Roman) Catholic, but was not force fed Catholicism as my parents had been all their lives and with much thought DID NOT want to "DO" this to my sister and I. So on my own, in my 30's decided to become born-again, which I really HATE that term, always have. To me it really just stands for my belief in Jesus Christ as my Saviour, that he was in this world to atone for all of us who believe in him and love him that he came here to die and take all of our sin away so that we can be close to the Father. Anyway, that all said, the Pope, Catholicism are just horrible in what the "religion" has done TO, not FOR the people. Just take the sex crimes against children alone.....I have written too much already......

1988 at a party this was playing. I thought at first it was Siouxsie and the Banshees but realized quite quickly that it wasn't. I told my friends to leave me alone as I sat in the chair between the two speakers and listened. The party noise faded away to nothing but slight background noise as I listened. I bought the LP and cassette the very next morning. I still remember the smells and colors and voices of that party way back when. It is etched into my memory with the first time I heard The Lion and The Cobra. Even after a thousand listens.

thats how music is for me too... u remember everything..its like time traveling when u put on a record

    Think Tank

My memory was 1988 in Navy at Guams Naval Hospital, needed repair. Heard this and Mandinka playing in rehab for legs. Bought cassette soon after and liked her ever since. No voice like hers anywhere.

A lot of us discovered Sineade and TLATC in '87.
