NOFX - The Separation Of Church And Skate Lyrics

[Father:] Hey Kids!
[Kids:] Hey Dad!
[Father:] What'da want to do today?
[Kids:] We don't know.
[Father:] Wanna go to the matinee?
[Kids:] NO!
[Father:] Wanna go to the Amusement Park?
[Kids:] NO!
[Father:] Wanna go to the punk rock show?
[Kids:] Yeah! Let's go to the punk rock show!

Lost in a sea of combat boots,
Flush the bouncers with wasted youth
When did punk rock become so safe?
When did the scene become a joke?
The kids who used to live for beer and speed
Now want their fries and coke
Cursing and flipping birds are not allowed,
In fact let's keep noise levels down

Must separate the church and skate!

Why don't we put pads on the kids?
Helmets, head gear and mouth pieces!
Then we could pad the floor and walls,
Put cameras inside bathroom stalls
We make sure only nice bands play,
Make every show a matinee
Teach kids to be all they can be,
And we could sing my country tis of thee
Sweet land of liberty

When did punk rock become so safe?
I know it wasn't Duane or Fletcher,
Who put up the barricades
Like a stake in the heart,
Somehow we got driven apart

[Solo]

I want conflict! I want dissent!
I want the scene to represent
Our hatred of authority,
Our fight against complacency
Stop singing songs 'bout girls and love!
You killed the owl! You freed the dove!
Confrontation and politics
Replaced with harmonies and shticks
When did punk rock become so tame?
These fucking bands all sound the same
We want our fights we want our thugs!
We want our burns we want our drugs!
Where is the violent apathy?!
These fucking records are rated G!

When did punk rock become so safe?!

so funny how this song was completely commercialized. capitalism's ability to utterly banalize everything, including dissent against it, is amazing really.

    masterpiece !!!!!!!!!!!

I used to think this song was an overreaction, then I saw Blink 182's Darkside music video.

Punk is supposed to be rebellious and go against what's considered "mainstream". In the 80s and 90s when I grew up it was counter-cultural to be more left-wing and rebel against the religious right. So punk became more left-wing and almost solely identified with the democratic party. Now stuffy elitist democrats who would never go near a punk show are the ones in control of the media and big tech. They are worth billions and love censoring people for wrong think or anyone that disagrees with them all while pushing socialism. They are the new religious right. But instead, their religion is "Social Justice". It's funny that Gen-Z is starting to rebel against norms and adopt a more right-wing/free speech stance against censorship. And so the cycle continues. I hate politics.

  28. W.... E....

I've listened to nofx for years but liberalism can still suck a nut

    Stupid childish lyrics, stupid song.

  42. D.... D....

Welcome to 2018! Where the punk scene has sadly turned into a joke by allowing SJWs taint it

    D.... D....

Danny Dircio What does it feel like to have SJWs live in your head, rent free? I'm not sure who is worse, the people that always take the opportunity to cry about SJWs, or the SJWs themselves.

    D.... D....

Raven R, well given the fact the the punk movement is being controlled by SJWs, it's a sad thing. Punks use to offended and now they get offended. SJWs and Conservatives (mostly complain) are the worst! Conservatives are against PC culture, but lately they've been hunting people who are not politically correct (James Gunn).

THIS IS A PERFECT PUNK SONG!!!

  52. C.... L....

  72. M.... z....

punk become so safe when PC shit moved into it

  73. J.... W....

    The BEST nofx song

  74. M.... Z....

I mean well when I say this, but NOFX helped make Punk Rock safe. They're like the biggest influence for Pop Punk.

Lyrically they're definitely still deep in the punk rock field but their catchiness is what helped provide bands like Blink-182 and later Pop Punk bands with a framework for 'safe' Punk music. They're so good, that if Pop (safe) Punk is their grave, they dug it themselves.

That's pretty fuckin Punk Rock to me!

    M.... Z....

I love these guys, but you are right. They try too much to be provocative sometimes. Telling parents that they aren't punk if they put helmets on their kids when they learn to skate? WTF? My cousin was one of those skate punks who used to compete in vert against Tony Hawk. But he was older when he decided not to wear a helmet. Yeah yeah yeah, we know that Tony Hawk was a dork whose parents made him wear pads and a helmet when he was in high school or whatever. But damn, we have 6 year olds skating vert now. My kids skated with the Eatons when they were young. They'd all be dead right now without pads and helmets. Letting your kids die when learning to skate is NOT punk rock! Perhaps these guys are doing too many drugs to realize how dangerous skating is now for kids. This isn't the 70s and 80s!

    M.... Z....

LilMessaldo Vert is kind of an exception. Most people will skate very with a helmet but it’s unnecessary for street skating. I know it sounds weird but after a while you learn how to fall. Of course you can still hit ur head, but unless ur skating handrails n stuff your kid will be fine

    M.... Z....

@Justin Im Only reason I made this post, btw, is because my 11 year old just learned to play this song on bass. The lyrics are just trying too hard to be punk. Way too hard. I disagree with what you said when it comes to the little ones, but I'm primarily talking about the sons and daughters of skate punks (like the song), ones with hardcore kids. I'm not talking about rec street kids who are just messing around. I broke my back and became paralyzed at 11. My cousin skated for Santa Cruz and Converse. We were nuts, and our kids are like us. My kid, for instance, was on a mini-mega within three weeks of learning to skate. He was dropping in to 9-foot pools, too. Telling kids like that not to wear pads when they are starting out because they won't be "punk" enough is just trying too hard, imo. I've seen how badly kids can get hurt.

    M.... Z....

@LilMessaldo - Unless you know otherwise, I would guess that they're talking about those parents who put helmets on their kids during normal play (and walk them on leashes).

    M.... Z....

@ Mitch Zro - I doubt NOFX had a fraction of the influence on pop punk that Green Day and The Offspring had. I'm 30 years old and I've literally never heard one NOFX song on the radio. My thought is Nirvana got huge with catchy tunes while still being seen as alternative and as slackers, and the two OTHER most melodically talented (catchy) bands on the radio just happened to be "punk", so that's the way alternative rock leaned as Nirvana imploded. Blink 182 came next, mixing in a bit of emo whine, and that's what carried into the next decade.

  75. T.... F....

The kids who use to live for beer and speed!
All want theirs fires and coke!

  76. V.... ....

Many safe space crybabies have flooded the scene.

  77. J.... C....

  82. R.... N....

I remember first listening to a NOFX album and being totally blown away by how unique and fuckin' technically quick they were compared to all the other mainstream stuff I had been listening to.

  83. j.... s....

el HEFEE!! LE VENDE LA MERLUSA A MIKE??

  84. -.... C....

The answer you're looking for is 1978. Listen to your crass.

  85. T.... W....

Fuck fake punk!! Fuck 5sos! Fuck MCR! Fuck all the mainstream modern 'punk' and alternative that just burst into the sene!

    T.... W....

Both of those bands are far from punk, the closest MCR got would be on Three Cheers

    T.... W....

Austin Graves I hear people try to call them punk

  86. T.... ....

LOL the intro makes so much fun of mxpx one hit wonder

  87. M.... ....

;These guys make me believe that punk is safe, even if the kids maybe aren't

    M.... G....

Memo Gonzalez I'm sorry bro I just hate it when people say that because some people don't have mom's and dads

    M.... G....

    someone needs a safe space.

    M.... G....

Did you see your mom and dad yet?

  89. R.... J....

In case anyone wants to skip the "Hey Kids" intro and get straight to the lyrics, it starts at 00:51.

  90. O.... W....

I always wondered what the pennywise line meant. I mean I get it but what barricades.. maybe im missing it. maybe they mean barricades between pennywise and nofx in the sense of record labels and that driving them apart?

    O.... W....

Oneida Wolf it's literally barricades at shows between the crowd and the band cuz in the early days there were none and kids would just jump on stage or whatever

  91. G.... ....

hey kids! wanna go to the punk rock show?
    Father of the year- 2016

    G.... ....

Gr3nadgr3gory: I think it’s talking smack about how mainstream punk has gotten. “When did punk rock become so safe” even parents take their children

    G.... ....

    for sure

    G.... ....

    Gr3nadgr3gory 😂

    G.... ....

Lol my dad use 2 be like wana go to the plugs and get some loud but now hes like wana go to church... no thank u

    G.... ....

@Nathan Bruce he means safe as conformity, punk used to be this "dangerous" force in society and its gone

  92. A.... M....

This was my favorite song growing up, still easily up there.

  93. J.... W....

I'm a 15 year old starting a punk band, and let me tell you, my lyrics are far from P.C.... Punk rock still has a chance..

    J.... W....

punk is about to come back we are heading disc a path if decent and despair. get ready people life in the next few years is going to get hard and punxs will win.

    J.... W....

think for yourself and create a new genre

    J.... W....

"Punks not dead it just deserves to die"
thats pretty agreeable to both sides.

  94. T.... F....

nofx best song ever made hands down

  95. T.... F....

    love the album cover

  96. B.... G....

i'm still wondering when did punk rock become so safe ...

    B.... G....

Pretty much after the grunge movement died. Grunge was the final stand of punk IMO. Than bands like Blink-182 and Green Day came along.

    B.... G....

    Just look harder.

    B.... G....

FightHellandSilence Blink isn't that bad but I hate GD

    B.... G....

Dude Ranch remains one of my favourite pop punk albums.
