Nitty Gritty Dirt Band - The Rest Of The Dream Lyrics

You were a tiny spark
Caught in your parents' eyes
When they made love in the dark
You were the big surprise
And the old man came through
Gave his very best for you
And your mother's arms
They kept you warm
Like no other arms could do

When you couldn't find the light
At the top of the stairs
When you cried in the night
Well, you knew they were there
Will the light of the day
Was as bright as it seemed
And you knew in your heart
You were livin' the rest of the dream

Well, I had a dream of you
But I never realized
Baby, the dream was true
That's when you opened my eyes

And I will come through
Do my very best for you
And your lovin' arms
Gonna keep me warm
Like no other arms will do

When you can't find the light
At the top of the stairs
When you cry in the night
Well, you know I'll be there
Till the light of the day
Is as bright as it seems
And you know in your heart
You're livin' the rest of the dream

Now I see a tiny spark
Caught in your lovin' eyes
As we make love in the dark
And wait for the big surprise

And the old man will come through
Son or daughter, just for you
And your mama's arms
Gonna keep you warm
Like no other arms can do

When you can't find the light
At the top of the stairs
When you cry in the night
Well you know we'll be there
Till the light of the day
Is as bright as it seems
And you know in your heart
You're livin' the rest of the dream

When you couldn't find the light
At the top of the stairs
When you cried in the night
Well, you knew they were there
Will the light of the day
Was as bright as it seemed
And you knew in your heart
You were livin' the rest of the dream

When I was a baby the only way my mother could make me fall asleep at night and stop crying was to pay me this album she put it on it worked every night wouldn’t make a sound buy time Jr’s grill come on. I was out cold I can still remember to this day when I’m feeling like I’m miserable and there’s not a hope in the world I play this album chills me to the bone and give me goosebumps everytime and some way it makes me know everything is going to be okay. Got me threw a lot if I could thank u all personally I would I know it’s just a album but it’s more then that to me ...

I'll be getting out the wagon to hitch up the team, come Spring Break up here on the farm, to hear The Boys in PA in March.  Figuring 50 miles a day, and stops for Ethel, I'll be make a go of it, though Mountaintop is a bear in Winter.  I sure hope they play, 'The Rest Of The Dream', as Ma still gets up and dances for that one.  Quite a gal and then some.  Boy, I know she'll be twitching in her seat when they come on stage!!  Ethel loves them handsome boys, though she be too old to get a second look, now.   But we got some good seats using some seed money to come away with the best fruits of the season.  AMEN!

What a classy group still after 50 years of amazing Bluegrass in their review mirror!
This classic band started making music in 1966 which happens to be my year I was born😉 There music is timeless to this very day. Thank you NGDB

nice song. A clear representation of the gradual transition of country music

Not that country music didn't need to evolve somewhat, but I don't like what it has progressed into today.

Such a great rendition of a great song. The lyrics ring so true. I love how the song comes around to the singer's present time at the end. John Hiatt has written so many amazing songs.
