Nitty Gritty Dirt Band - Some Of Shelly's Blues Lyrics

Tell me
Just one more time the reason why you must leave
Tell me once more why you're sure you don't need me
Tell me again but don't think you'll convince me

You said
About fallin' in love again you'd rather be dead
When someone breaks your heart you cry your eyes red
There's nothin' so hard about the life that you've led

As far as I can see
There's no reason for goodbye
You're just runnin' scared
And that's something I won't buy

So you lose
I won't let you go there's nothin' to show but more blues
All this talk about leavin' is strictly bad news
So you settle down and stay with the boy that loves you

As far as I can see
There's no reason for goodbye
You're just runnin' scared
And that's something I won't buy

So you lose
I won't let you go and there's nothin' to show but more blues
All this talk about leavin' is strictly bad news
So you settle down and stay with the boy that loves you

Ah, you settle down and stay with the boy that loves you
Yeah, you settle down and stay with the boy that loves you

Nitty Gritty Dirt Band Some Of Shelly's Blues Comments
  1. p.... ....

To repeat an earlier post. Best version hands down.

  2. A.... e....

Linda Rondstat and the Stone Ponys did a song of his 'Different Drum' another hit.

  3. C.... 8....

For those who like this ... as I do...if you haven’t yet done so, listen to Michael Nesmith’s version (which he wrote of course) from the album ‘Pretty Much Your Standard Ranch Stash’ ... it will blow your socks off !

  4. S.... H....

I was named after this song😍😍

  5. c.... ....

che meraviglia...dopo tanti anni ancora fresca e bella!

  6. M.... F....

Their up tempo style sounds so much better to me than the way Nesmith and others sang it; slow and bluesy.

  7. C.... S....

    Great song. Feel good music.

  8. L.... H....

Falling in love with this album all over again, for my money it's their best.

  9. M.... B....

If they lost the drums this would be a bluegrass classic. Great song all the same.

  10. B.... M....

This was their opening song at a concert at Mount Union College (Univ of Mt. Union) in Alliance, Ohio circa 1973. Them was the days!

  11. J.... H....

Listen to Nez do it on Live At the Britt

  12. J.... C....

McCutchen said that the NGDB called this "Some of Soundcheck Blues;" in their early days, opening for many other acts, they often didn't get a sound check, so they'd open with this one. The different instruments and vocals, coming in one at a time, gave the sound man time to (at least) get a rough mix set up. I sang it with John at a Folk Alliance showcase some years back — I knew the tenor part and started singing it along with him; he told me to come up on "stage" with him, and I played mandolin for the rest of the set. Great memory!

    J.... C....

Meant "McEwen" not McCuthen! It's hard work being an idiot.

  13. B.... P....

4-am the crew come a calling, riding down the road.

  14. B.... P....

This was one of my favorites on the album, even though- the entire album is great. ---- and I do agree with the guy below me 14 - yeah !

  15. r.... h....

the opening track, to my favorite album of all time. God, the great memories of the early, 1970's!!!!

  16. J.... C....

is this there best album best ive heard but i havent all there bac cat

  17. S.... ....

In memory of Harry Rhoades; Coconut Grove,Fl;and the many times we did this ong

  18. S.... O....

The outro is the greatest thing NGDB ever did.

  19. m.... s....

Always loved this, takes me back to High School.  Didn't Michael Nesmith write this?

    m.... s....

    He did!!

  20. M.... B....

NGDB ispirired me to play the harp back in the 70's still doing it. I love that bluegrass sound.

  21. P.... ....

I'm sorry, I have a sense of humor, but fart humor, I fail to see the humor in that. I think if I chewed Juicy Fruit gum, I'd boycott it just for those commercials. I just want to hear Some of Shelly's Blues, not hear farting before the song. Sort of grosses me out, and I don't gross out easily.

  22. D.... T....

Cullowhee..The Starlight in Waynesville, NC.. oh the memories..Love you all.

    D.... T....

This reminds me of being a sophomore in high school in 1973, having study hall in the cafeteria on the side with the jukebox and always somebody would play this song. I'd never heard it before and I loved it. Never could find it, because I wasn't sure of the name. I just found it like maybe five years ago on here. Every time I hear it, reminds me of my sophomore year in high school.

  23. D.... D....

Ibby's voice and Jeff's harmonizing, makes me happy.

    D.... D....

    Me, too. It's so beautiful it makes me happy. :) :) :) :) :) !!!!

  24. L.... P....

Michael Nesmith songs seem easy to recognize when you figure out his style.

  25. J.... B....

    DAMNIT BOY NOW THATS GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  26. M.... B....

This is the song that inspired me to learn the harp...  This and Mr. Bojagles are the greatest harmonica songs ever.

  27. a.... ....

Meh. Too much going on here, like a circus. Nez-in-a-box. With all due respect, of course.

    a.... ....

Harmony is good but it's too fast if you're used to Nez doing it.

  28. t.... ....

    :) !!!!!!!!!!

  29. H.... B....

from the beautiful album "Uncle Charlie & His Dog Teddy" (1970). When I was 14 years old I must have listened to this LP for at least a few hundred times. Magic times

    H.... B....

    so much magic!

    H.... B....

@Hans - I could have written your exact post! We can't be far apart in age. So I'm sure you also still have Uncle Charlie & his dog's "duet" in your mind .... "Doe, doe, doe, ..... RroooRWHOO-OO-OO-OO" !! - (Haha, how do you literalize a dog's whine?!!) Love the Dirt Band's & also Ronstadt's version of this song.

    H.... B....

I was 16 when it came out, bought it and played till it wore out. Still love it.

  30. w.... ....

NEZ had a way with music

  31. D.... H....

    Such a great tune!

  32. P.... ....

    Mine, too.

  33. i.... ....

    Written by Mike Nesmith.

  34. j.... k....

    produced by momkee mike nesmith

  35. S.... ....

This was THE album that awakened me musically so many long years ago. Songs like this and the other gems featured on the Uncle Charlie album inspired me to learn the 5-string banjo, acoustic guitar and the mandolin; and forty years later and I'm still going strong. Thanks for posting this great cut!

  36. u.... m....

Just listen to Linda Ronstadt singing alongside. Blows all of them out of the water.

  37. B.... R....

Thanks for uploading this. Sometimes you just need to hear a piece of music, and this is one of those times. Just going to hear it perhaps 3 more times then I can leave it for a few more years.

  38. r.... ....

every few years I get a hankering to hear this .........

  39. s.... f....

mickael nesmith of the monkees wrote this song. i love this song

    s.... f....

So do I, best version ever.

  40. c.... ....

Absotively LOVE this version... Thankee, thankee, thankee ! (grin)

  41. b.... ....

    It's actually Shelley

  42. S.... H....

This is, first and formost, a great song...period! I loved songwriter Mike Nesmith's original version! But Nitty Gritty's version is the first version I heard, and it has ALWAYS been one of my very favorite songs...period! Thanks so much for posting this most underrated song...no matter who recorded it!

  43. T.... ....

There is always gonna be someone to come along and ruin a great song..I wanted to be fair cause I like some of these guys tunes, but this was just awful. They should all call and apologize to Mike Nesmith

    T.... ....

Second by second, The Nitty Gritty Dirt band's version is the best ever made!

    T.... ....

Geez, that's sad what you just said, TheJdc34life, seriously.

  44. o.... a....

anyone know wha chord this song is in??

  45. c.... ....

@WalkerBros4Ever, that's very cool! I will have to check your uploads out! :D

  46. M.... ....

Love this song and loved this group!!!!

  47. M.... ....

    This was the 1st version.

  48. c.... ....

Yup, a few songs made famous by other artists were written by Mr. Nesmith, and still others have covered some songs that he himself recorded. He is a very underrated singer/songwriter/musician. Really, all 4 of the Monkees are underrated because they remain in the shadow of the whole manufactured band thing. Peter Tork is an accomplished folk/blues musician who has written some killer songs as well. I really love how NGDB did this song, and am a longtime fan of Mike Nesmith! :)

    c.... ....

Well said, I totally agree, I LOVE Nez too!

  49. S.... H....

I can't tell you how blown away I was when I first realized this rocking country-folk song was written by ex(?)-Monkee Michael Nesmith! And what a stunning arrangement by The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band! This song was one of the most underrated of its genre, but true music fans can still appreciate it after all these years. Thanks for posting it!

  50. j.... ....

Always loved this song! Thanks for putting it on YouTube!

One of my favorite songs - preceeded by an "Americans for Prosperity" (Koch Brothers) ad - I think I'm gonna be sick.....

  53. s.... m....

I just got home from the VietNam...............I loved this album..

  56. w.... ....

@grimchieftain It's on that same album (Uncle Teddy) and available on iTunes.

  57. w.... ....

If you are going to ignore copyrights, then I think you should do more with the video than just show the album cover for three minutes.

  58. a.... ....

Nitty Gritty was the first band I saw in concert. They opened for the Doors at the Washington Hilton Hotel in 1968. Been a fan of theirs ever since!!!

  59. g.... ....

Anybody have NGDB's version of 'Propinquity'? I've loved that song since the early '70's but am having a hard time finding it. I found Michael Nesmith's version but don't like it as well.

  60. J.... L....

So let's see....that silly guy with the wool cap gets his original songs recorded by several bonifide blues artists and now he gets a folk-Americana-country classic band to do one of his old songs. Not bad for a guy who used to be a Monkee. Not bad at all. Never under-estimate any songwriter or who may be listening to them. This track by the NGDB is excellent. And a hat tip to Michael Nesmith too.

  61. S.... C....

yeah my theme song you see my name is shelly thanks for putting this on one of my fav albums

  62. E.... F....

This brings me way back when my dad used to drop us off at my granny's on his way to the O club at CAB in PI.

  63. h.... ....

great song, great album! anyone out there got santa rosa, from the same album?

  64. a.... ....

It's the first chords ... isn't it? Wonderful and timeless. You can hear the pithy lyrics, empathize with the lyrics and feel .... wonderful
Just the title " some of shelley's what .." which prevents us all from finding it !
I love You Tube when it works like this
Jane in London, Venice and Paris

  65. J.... M....

Great song, thanks for posting it

  66. C.... ....

I never get tired of hearing this song. Thank you for posting!

  67. C.... B....

Thanks for posting this song, I have a 45 that is so worn the record player needle just slides over it. A brilliant tune that I haven't heard since the late 70's but always remembered.

  68. j.... ....

I wish John McEuen would learn to play the banjo. (It's a joke) What a great version. I am glad they are still around. Steve Martin was their opening act for years, and glad to have the gig.

    j.... ....

john9944 John Mc and Steve Martin are old friends. They met at age 16 working in the magic shop at Disneyland. Been playing banjo about the same length of time too.

  69. W.... T....

At least one of the Monkee's had some talent!
Love NGDB too! This may be my favorite NGDB album.

  70. J.... B....

Makes me think of lying by dad's record player while he worked at his desk. We bonded over this LP.

  71. D.... W....

I agree! I just love Linda Ronstadt! I would also love to hear the Uncle Charlie prologue included with Mr. Bojangles! I thank you for posting these Dirt Band tunes!

  72. n.... ....

Thanks for posting this. I love this song, my vinyl is pretty worn down on this song. Thanks again.
