Nitty Gritty Dirt Band - Mother Of The Bride Lyrics
I hired the band, you planned the buffet line
The food and the music would be hot
You fought with our daughter 'bout what color ought to
Be featured in pastel chiffon
Affecting a tropical air
And you and I set aside what separates us
As we celebrate the wedding of our child
Our friends filled the hall and brought their presents
Wanted our little girl to have enough
To feather a nest and start a family
The kids must feel this outporing of love
I just hope that these friends and this family
And we'll be there in years to come to help them
Use up and eat off all the stuff they brought
So dance with me, mother of the bride
And stand strong against me at my side
Take a look with joy and wonder
As our daughter and her man take the floor
We really want them to be happy as they can
Squeeze my hand and whisper earnestly that you
Hope they avoid all the pain that we went through
I agree that they'll be lucky and it's the truth
If he loves her half as much as I love you
As papa I'll proudly waltz 'round with the bride
But one dance with her won't be enough, dear
I gave her away on the hillside this morning
But it's not that easy giving her up
So dance with me mother of the bride
Cheek to cheek so she won't know that I have cried
Take a look with joy and wonder
As our daughter and her man take the floor
We want em to be happy as they can
Squeeze my hand and whisper earnestly that you
Hope they avoid all the pain that we went through
And I agree that they'll be lucky and it's through
If he loves her half as much as I love you
if he loves her half as much as I love you

Nitty Gritty Dirt Band Mother Of The Bride Comments
Saw them many, many times over the years in the 80’s and 90’s. Also saw he and McEuen’s “show” in the early 00’s. Even got to see the whole band in the Ryman in the early 00’s with Allison Krauss and Vince Gill. This was the most awkward performance of that song ever. People go through things, famous or not — but watching this felt like being at a Thanksgiving dinner with a family member who has said nasty things about everyone. 🤷🏻♀️ lol.
The band is not the same without Jimmy Ibbotson I am from Canada Wish I could have visited the Ryman Auditorium I did see them in 1991 when they made the record "Live to Five" been a big fan
exactly
I agree with you i have the cd live to five one of their best. I have seen them six times over the years and now John mceuen left its like caroke not the same band
This was me. I could be little Jean as my parents remarried each other in 1996.
poor quality
I think Jimmy dosen't like to fly, one reason for not stayin with NGDB.
He hates to fly...after being strip searched every time due to a shoulder replacement.
The cold shoulder was palatable. I am so disappointed. How sad that that they couldn't at least try to look like they liked each other. They could have done it for the fans.
glad jimmy was there. wish they could make amends and keep him
They could have at least pretended they like each other. They always say its about the fans. How disappointing.
I think he should of been the lead singer his voice is amazing.
He and Jeff Hanna shared lead vocals for decades.
I love the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band I have been listening to these guys for years I got to go to there 50th anniversary concert twice now there still good but they will not be as good with out Jimmy Ibbotson I really miss him being in the band he is the only member I didn't get to meet :( if I had the money to Go to Colorado my ass would be going up there and seeing him they need to put his voice in a Museum for best Country voice.
Jimmy Ibbotson is one of the most iconic voices in American music. I got to tell him that several years ago 😎
desde muy pequeño sigo a esta gran banda!!felicitaciones por el aniversario
It's so sad that the falling out between Ibby and Hanna was so deep. I was surprised to see Ibby there.
lvsrlmsc I've just watched this for the first time, it's very obvious here......
lvsrlmsc there is a time......
Jimmy wrote fabulous songs and never played the ego game, love him.they would throw him out of the band and he would come down to telluride and give us such joy with his energy
Their brothers though
Yes very sad - always been a fan of this band since the early 70s - didn't really know about the falling out - I sense the tension - pity. Great talents all of them - just the best, most interesting and eclectic roots music and always sat right at the top of that hippie country.bluegrass pop rock folk field along with The Dillards. Jeff is ageless and John just never stops - what great musicians and singers, and an absolute treasure were the NGDB
<3 Jimmy Ibbotson.
Was quite confused that they had such great players (Sam Bush and Jerry Douglas) - and gave them hardly anything to do - especially Jerry Douglas . . .
Not sure I know what you mean — but those guys were never “members” of NGDB. They were musicians on the Circle albums. Terrific ones — esp. Jerry Douglas.
So sweet how he got a bit choked up when he mentioned his daughter SarahJean.
How the energy in the room went up a couple notches when he stepped on the stage. So glad I was there.
