This EP and the entire trilogy is probably the best NIN we got since TDS and The Fragile. Not to say that other albums are bad, but this is a fucking masterpiece.

I ended up playing this melodious cacophony on repeat on my drive back home multiple nights last week.

Something about trying your best to pick up the pieces, scrambling not to drop anything, and then watching in horror as everything shatters into thousands of even smaller pieces is gratifying on a very unique level. I honestly feel like the choruses are also crossing a line, a point where you realize how broken things are and you just smash whatever survived into a billion pieces to spite the spite you're experiencing -- impotent anger on full display.

In short, I think it demonstrates quite competently that sometimes we're going to fail and we just have to accept that for what it is.

This has a fantastic downturn. It's like watching a 10th grader who thinks he's hot shit in his high school band being shown what's truth by the actual rock star who saw his YouTube video and was being kind by telling him to "go for it". Love the whole "fucking look at this kiddo".

Finally a song that doesn't sound like a kraftwerk reboot. Not bad, I like the soft/loud pixie style used here.

The beginning puts the image of doctors using a defibrillator on someone in my head. The heartbeat and the sound of electricity and the sudden noises and then the end with the "I can't seem to wake up" all sums up to that I feel

I love this song. I like how it goes from having a harsh mellow feel of something from The Fragile to being dark, heavy and chaotic in the chorus. It's like being on a chaotic rollercoaster ride that leaves you at the edge of your seat.

This song, of itself, seems like it was so strongly inspired by the live-performance aspect of the Nine Inch Nails multi-formed structure. It features a cool take on the Tech-Punk subgenre. It is really cool & gives the impression of being inside of a mind that is focused upon frustration & ready to let loose.

I at first had mixed feelings about it, but it's starting to grow on me. The EP at first sounds kinda light, but it has really dark and dark ambient undertones in it that I'm starting to like. The Lovers to me has become one of the darkest songs NIN has done so far.

Hard to describe the way the first listen of this song had me feeling, but it was powerful. I was on the verge of sleep, but wanted to listen to the whole album so badly that night, and the tempo and energy change shocked me into a certain level of anxiety... which was not pleasant, but it made me feel something different than how the rest of his recent songs made me feel. Great song.

Same thing happened to me. I believe i woke up to the distortion loop at the end of The Background World from being half asleep.

Ever since Ghosts, and HTDA, Trent has thrown out music theory in the best fucking way. The Believers, still my all time favorite song. This, to me, is sound design, more than it is composition, and shows you how flexible music is.

Trent is definitely branching out from sticking to the standard song formula (Verse/Chorus/Verse/Chorus/Bridge/Chorus). Nothing wrong with that standard, but being experimental is what art is about.

I agree that he experiments with form. However, this actually follows the exact form you mentioned. He manages to make it sound different, and maybe that is even more impressive.

He does seem to be more of a sound designer than your typical musician, but then he always did have great textures. And hides his earworms so well it takes five listens to even get there.
