Nine Inch Nails - Beside You In Time Lyrics

I am all alone this time around
Sometimes on the side I hear a sound
Places parallel I know it's you
Feel the little pieces bleeding through

[Chorus:]
And on (And on)
This goes on (And on)
And on (And on)
And on (And on)
And on (And on)
And on (And on)
And on (And on)
And on (And on)
And on (And on)
This goes on (And on)
And on (And on)
And on (And on)
And on (And on)
And on (And on)
And on (And on)
And on (And on)
And on

Now that I've decided not to stay
I can feel me start to fade away
Everything is back where it belongs
I will be beside you before long

[Chorus]

[x2]
Oooh we will never die
Oooh Beside you in time

Nine Inch Nails Beside You In Time Comments
  1. B.... S....

    Music for time travelers.

  2. t.... h....

U guys havent felt the real feeling of the song till u smoke a J to it, really 😏

  3. E.... E....

One of my all time favorite songs, EVER. This song came along just when I was re-evaluating my view of everything, of my place in reality. It's incredible how this can harmonize with you when you're perceiving that many realities may exist simultaneously. I'm not high right now, by the way. I've just always felt this way about this song!

  4. C.... S....

Reznor said this track in particular had a lot of experimentation with in and out of phase beats. That's why it sounds so weird and crazy until it merges back together to create an actual beat. Fans of The Smiths might recall "How Soon Is Now" as that track uses very similar effects on the guitar.

  5. M.... R....

Close your eyes... Breathe... Forget about stuff... Breathe... Feel at peace in this chaos

  6. P.... ....

This song is a genre in itself. Its own sci-fi epic

  7. S.... H....

thriller author of NINTH CAR at amazon.com books sez: I make my vow: This is the trippiest, most absorbing and introspective piece of music I've ever heard. Like much of NIN's oeuvre, it transcends rock.

  8. J.... ....

    Love it after 3:40

  9. M.... V....

This song is moody like me

  10. S.... ....

This song reminds me that someday I'll see my dead friends soon

    Someday...

  11. O.... ....

I've had a vision for the video to this song in my head for years now. It goes like this:

0:00 - fade in from black
    - vacant city street at night
    - camera is at street level looking at a building
    - the outline of feet and legs can be seen on either side of the screen
0:12 - as the music pulses, so does the picture. Fading to black & back in again with each pulse of the music. Each "visual pulse" is a still frame
    - camera moves up vertically and zooms out until we see a disheveled man with a nearly empty fifth of vodka in his left hand (with a wedding ring), a smartphone in his right back pocket, looking up at the top of the building
    - camera pans around the man, stopping at his left side, zooming in until only his upper body is in frame. we see trails of tears on his face.
    - his head levels, he slowly walks to the building's door, opens it and slowly walks to the elevator in the lobby
    - as he approaches the elevator the camera pans around behind him and slowly zooms in to hia right hand, which pushes the "up" button
    - the elevator doors open, man walks in to the elevator, the camera follows him in, he hits the button for the higest floor, walks to the back of the carriage and presses his head to the back wall
    - camera pans to the left around man, outside of the elevator, and zooms in until only his face (facing away from the doors) and the floor numbers above the doors are visible
    - camera pans down and moves down vertically as the man takes his smartphone from his back pocket, unlocks it, and starts to look at pictures of a woman, swiping through them with his thumb
    - we now see memories:
     - him and the woman meeting
     - going out
     - getting married
     - living together
     - woman getting sick
     - in a doctors office with scared expressions
     - walking in hospital holding hands while she pushes an IV medication stand with the other hand, dressed in a bathrobe, forcing a smile at man
     - her in a hospital bed with man kneeling beside it, crying
     - man at funeral
     - man at home throwing and breaking things
     - man slumped on the floor crying
     - man trying to go on dates with other women but it never working out
    - back to present: camera pans back around to the right and zooms out until his upper body, the elevator doors and the floor numbers
    - doors open, man puts phone away, turns around and walks out, as he does the camera follows at his back
    - he finds a door to the roof, opens it and climbs the stairs
    - as he approches the top of the stairs the camera slows its vertical movement to rest at floor level, following him out onto the roof of the building
    - we see his legs but not his hands. as he makes his way to the edge, we see the vodka bottle drop to the ground
    - man arrives at the ledge
    2:35 - visual pulses stop
    - camera moves up vertically and pans down 90 degress to show the man stopped at the ledge of a 40-story tall building, looking down
    - with the camera still above him, the man slowly tilts his head all the way back and closes his eyes
    - camera moves behind the man so that it is looking up at the sky with him. (we can see the back of his head)
    - man and camera follow the same path, simultaneously leaning forward, falling off the ledge
    3:08 - visual pulses resume
    - camera follows the man as he freefalls to the sidewalk
    - sidewalk gets closer and closer with each pulse until we are at ground level
3:40 - visual pulses stop, screen flashes white then quickly fades to black
    - man continues falling in blackness, rushing past an occasional beam of light
    - camera moves alongside man, we can see his face
    - man appears confused and scared, looking all around him
    - something grabs his attention off in the distance in front of him
    - camera moves to previous popsition behind man
    - we see a small light in the center of the frame, slowly getting bigger
    - as it gets bigger we see it is the woman, wearing all white and bathed in a white light
    - beams of light rushing past them increase in number
    - camera moves so it now appears they are hurdling upwards, woman on left, man on right
    - she moves in front of him, arms outstretched, smiling
    - beams of light rushing past them increase in number
    - man reaches out with both arms, smiling, tears running down his face
    - they embrace, the man rests his head on her chest and closes his eyes, smiling
    - the woman, cradling him, presses her head against his, closes her eyes, smiling
    - beams of light rushing past them increase exponentially as the screen whites and fades to black
    5:04  - visual pulses resume
    - camera zooms out showing the man in a bloody mess on the sidewalk
    5:15 - 5:25 - visual pulses fade out

I wish someone would make this video.

  12. s.... r....

NIN.....Trent Reznor, have achieved cult status worldwide......without ever playing any music industry games, giving precious few interviews, and never.....ever....compromising their vision and message? very few bands have even come close.

  13. a.... ....

3:40 reminds me of Half life 2 episode 2

  14. N.... ....

Officially, Music is one of the few things closer to God.

  15. J.... C....

    Awful head brought me here

  16. b.... ....

    Sarah, Sarah, Sarah, Sarah....

  17. J.... C....

This song was made for all meth heads

  18. J.... ....

Is it weird i understand it

  19. P.... C....

When I was a kid I used to listen to them all the time. I’m 13 now. Looking back at this reminds me of all my deceased grandparents and relatives. Really hits you in the feels.

  20. W.... ....

    My favorite NIИ song.

  21. U.... ....

    Fucking masterpiece.

  22. S.... K....

    Beautiful song

  23. J.... R....

This has that terrible and unknown urgency. I can picture a movie in my head of people trying to escape some sort of 'massive unknown'.

"Shit, we have to leave NOW"
    "Why?"
    "Because it's coming."
    "What is?"
    "I don't know."

And then time collapses in on itself, and all at once, everyone witnesses something that no living being has ever seen before, nor will ever see again.

    J.... R....

Waiting for the dmt to kick in.

  24. M.... ....

guys u should listen to this song at speed 2

  25. L.... E....

This one is happy? It is friggin weird. You will hear different things each time you listen to it. different beats followed by sounds.
5 years and this song is old only because I choose it to be. If I listen i pick up a whole new pattern. I would say 300 plus listens. still new. and happy?

it's right beside you in time. Respond in 5 years and let me know.

  26. M.... p....

Drugs? It's more about his true love that found someone else..

    M.... p....

Doesn't matter. He just defined me another possibility

  27. A.... L....

    Its hipnotic this song,

  28. E.... B....

This reminds me of LIMBO, by Playdead

  29. R.... I....

The ending always gives me goosebumps

  30. E.... E....

"THINGS HAVE NEVER BEEN SO SWELL.  I HAVE NEVER FAILED TO FEEL.  PAIN!!!  PAIN!!! PAIN!!! PAIN!!! PAIN!!!  I HOPE YOU'RE WRONG.  I HOPE YOU'RE WRONG. I HOPE YOU'RE WRONG.  I HOPE YOU'RE WRONG.  I HOPE YOU'RE WRONG.  YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE.  GO ON GET BACK TO WHERE YOU BELONG

  31. N.... L....

Almost got a speeding ticket when the song got to 3:40 ha

    N.... L....

Nelson Lara best song to drive fast to.

    N.... L....

I just lost someone to speeding. Was listening to this song to remind me of him...

    N.... L....

Trent does it to us all, we're in this together my friend

  32. T.... G....

Man, as soon as the second half of the song starts I have the biggest eargasm ever it's absolutely amazing.

  33. S.... H....

By the time the dust settles NIN will take its place among THE BEATLES and ZEP and FLOYD and others as one of THE greatest "bands" of all time. There's a giant among us, and few seem to realize it.

    S.... H....

EB: If The Beatles changed music, NIN changed the concept of sound itself. Look at the hits on a NIN site and you'll see TR never gets the attention he deserves vs. far inferior artists.

    S.... H....

I love NIN, aka, Trent Reznor and again I would say he gets recognized by his peers and people that would matter to you and me which is what he deserves and probably all he cares about LOL. He is not pop music thank f*ck, so he will never get the attention you feel he deserves. Mariah Carey has sooo many chart records it's sickening and I could not care less, but the vast majority will know her compared to Reznor. I can look at a NIN site and see tons of hits while a vast majority would not recognize one song. How many NIN songs you think topped the charts?
We both love NIN, but I was simply stating fact..you can love them more than the Beatles and think they have contributed as much to music but you would be in a vast minority. Pop rules the world. It's just the way it's always been except for when the Beatles appealed to all. They were a different animal that were not only pushing rock boundries but solidly pop. F*ck, more people knew the Osmonds than Black Sabbath LMAO

    S.... H....

EB: After you reach a certain point--TR DOES have legions of fans and has made millions--I suppose it all becomes abstract. In fact, heaven forbid if NIN ever became "Popular," as I'm sure it would destroy it as we know it. I suppose it's most people's inability to recognize QUALITY that grates on me. Don't get me wrong about THE BEATLES, a singular band without equal I'm a BIG fan of. I am only suggesting that, given the depth of its catalog, the sheer quality of its work, NIN/TR deserve to be mentioned in the same breath.

    S.... H....

S.A. Hogan that is the factiest fact to ever be spoken

    S.... H....

DP: And YOU are deserving of the thankiest thanks for mentioning it (!).

  34. V.... ....

The crescendo at 3:40 is so empowering. I always envision myself zooming out of my body upwards to the sight of my exact pinpoint on this planet.

    V.... ....

    you can do it

    V.... ....

I don't know why, it kind of reminds me of the james bond opening song

    V.... ....

And the conclusive vocal harmonies, simply perfect.

    V.... ....

V: Funny, but I envision you doing THE EXACT SAME THING, at this exact moment. Weird, huh? And of course a pinpoint must have a PINHEAD.

    V.... ....

It is! That's exactly how I always felt listening to this. There's something special about those frequencies.

  35. H.... Q....

personally all i can think of is the unrelenting agonizing desire to meet a deceased friend again its so painful to listen but its the perfect portrayal of grief and mourning

    H.... Q....

SO sorry for your loss; think I can relate. There's something suffocating about losing something you can never get back, from a loved one to a lost opportunity to lost youth. It's like accidentally dropping something into the water and watching it float away: bright and precious as it glitters in the late afternoon sun, just out of reach; forever and maddeningly irretrievable. The most encouraging thing I can say is honor this person by letting him/her live on in your heart, be your guardian angel--and know that you'll meet him/her again some day.

    H.... Q....

S.A. Hogan that’s really powerful man. You should write books or song lyrics or something

  36. a.... H....

Does this song remind anyone of eureka seven? I can just imagine sky surfing to this

    a.... H....

no, because I've never heard of eureka seven

    a.... H....

Tom T I have to wonder why you answered them but uh...thanks!

  37. C.... ....

My favorite song on this album. Year Zero and With Teeth are underrated.

    C.... ....

Year Zero is really relatable to todays world as the government really doesn't care about us.

    C.... ....

/it never did, but envisions about the future how much more mind control they have over us.

    C.... ....

@Bald Bird Barry "Happines in Mastery", and Trent found it in music.
    .

    C.... ....

    NIN is underrated period

  38. A.... F....

You think God is mad because people won't let him die.  They have the will to live forever, and even then, if they die, to carry their legacy on through their children, even against a part of themselves..... well, what if he knew we hate him for the same endless feeling/lack of feeling.  Wonder if we could ever learn to enjoy this world or worlds or ours.  Time doesn't exist?  But how do we learn?  Of course those who die forget.... so... how many of US are there?  Or are we one?  Is one enough to be happy... even if we are all fragments of ourselves.  Funny how chemicals throw my whole attitude into question.  Chemicals... wonder what those are.  More rules to slow me down... probably.  Thank you?  And also... no thank you.  Lol.  Gotta have both, after all.

    A.... F....

@***** It was mostly a bunch of bullshit.  Thanks, lol.

    A.... F....

No, wait, AF, they're The Lost Yeslyrics! Thanks for fessin' up, pardner.

  39. A.... M....

perfect song to play on a windy fall night

    A.... M....

It's amazing when I listen to it in my car driving on a cloudy and windy day. I love this song.

    A.... M....

    That pink beret though lol

  40. M.... H....

<--self declared innocent or virgin of mind, sts,  Wait, if I just listened does that mean my mind has been defiled? hmmmm...

well, to me the greatest thing accomplished here is the use of sound to create. I guess that is what every song does to some extent, but these sounds are from the same palette everyone has, but they are used in such a thought provoking way! I think I will need to relisten.

    M.... H....

@Melissa Holden it goes on and on and on and ...well you know the rest

  41. M.... D....

To the 1 person that disliked this...fuck you so hard

    M.... D....

+Rachel Macallister Wow what a dick

    M.... D....

+Rachel Macallister make that to the 2

    M.... D....

+Los Santos, San Andreas Watchout, we got a badass ova here

    M.... D....

    @mudturtlevision haha

    M.... D....

I'd take exception to your We Must All Be The SAME immaturity, RM, but looks like you've cut and run like a good li'l troll LONG ago.

  42. e.... ....

This makes me feel like I'm at my funeral and I'm leaving my body and saying my final good bye to all my loved ones. It blissfully peaceful.

    e.... ....

The same thing happens to me when I listen to Corona Radiata

  43. R.... R....

The soundscape that Reznor creates here is phenomenal. I get this image of the universe spinning around in circles which makes sense I guess as this song is supposed to be about eternal recurrence.

  44. S.... ....

Thrumming like a heartbeat in some melancholy animal, devoid of something lost beyond memory, yet this same creature has gained something indecipherable. As if the loss juxtaposed against something ever greater, only magnifying that beauty far beyond the norm.

    S.... ....

@fran jaff Talking about the song in prose.

@Matej Lepiš I'm sorry, I can see English isn't your primary language and I'm having a difficult time understanding.

    S.... ....

someone was in their first semester of college English. Congratulations.

    S.... ....

    @redmond1022 Not sure if serious.
    <_<
    Or sarcastic.

    (Never went to college)

    S.... ....

    redmond1022 Agreed... Very pretentious.

    S.... ....

@thinkpad411 We need more people to express this shit, man.

  45. C.... C....

If you like trip music, Shpongle - "Divine moments of truth."
    that is all.

    C.... C....

@Ty Colson fuck yes their albums are amazing

    C.... C....

    @Ty Colson boredoms - 777777

    C.... C....

Just checked it out--and their HD vid is a TRIP. Thx for suggesting, CC!

  46. C.... C....

The last three songs on this album are trippy as shit. Fuckin love it

    C.... C....

This is an amazing album. I have this as well as every other NIN album.❤️❤️

    C.... C....

    @Elle
    It really is.

    C.... C....

    +Colson Customs Definitely.👌🏻

  47. W.... ....

i like how disturbances resonate throughout the underlying background tone

  48. S.... ....

Anyone else think of a Newton's cradle during this song?

    S.... ....

No! (but the vid for "Only" CERTAINLY inspires such thoughts)

  49. e.... ....

    resonating reznor.

  50. S.... H....

In two words, "Sonic Mindfuck," and no one does it better than Trent, here (though you MUST have headphones to "get" it). A haunting, melancholy, hypnotic marvel of aural manipulation---the sort of song that reminds you NIN is beyond rock (as if there were ever any doubt).

    S.... H....

    Agreed.

    S.... H....

    @SlamifiedBuddafied Cool!

    S.... H....

+Visceral Abyss As it is here. Certainly agree with the "good" part but NOT the "simple" part. If it's so "simple" why can't anyone else pull this off? Kinda like someone saying HE can play EVH's "Eruption," no prob.

  51. N.... ....

Unadulterated attachment to that special someone. That's what the song's about.
    It's so romantic, it hurts.

  52. W.... ....

if you keep holding the volume up button on a mac after the volume is maxed, it perfectly compliments this song after like 3:00.

  53. J.... D....

    absolutely astonishing piece of songwriting

  54. m.... ....

anyone else high from listening to this?

    m.... ....

yeah, just had a flashback haha

  55. .... ....

I'm so tired of people relating every song to drugs.

    .... ....

The irreparable is irreparable...... You spend the rest of your life picking up the pieces to make sense of what you had no control over in the first place. Period. You don't have to understand that. But if you did .....you wouldn't say that.

    .... ....

    Blow me.
    There, I changed it.
    You welcome.

    .... ....

During this period in his life he was morning when his exwife left him and he spiraled into drugs.... but the feels he is going though is not just limited to drugs. As with every song take it how it makes you feel and stop worrying about others opinions

  56. B.... N....

    fuck!! music starts at 3:43

    B.... N....

If you actually skip to 3:43 when you listen to this, I highly insist, no, demand, you NEVER listen to Nine Inch Nails again.

  57. D.... K....

This has to be the best representation of an LSD trip I've ever seen/heard.

  58. c.... z....

I think this is somewhere among his best efforts.

  59. W.... ....

reminds me of my sonic electric toothbrush

  60. S.... ....

    just.....everything i needed

  61. T.... ....

    hmmm completely mind numbing
