Nina Simone - Strange Fruit Lyrics

Southern trees
Bearin' strange fruit
Blood on the leaves
And blood at the roots
Black bodies
Swinging in the southern breeze
Strange fruit hangin'
From the poplar trees
Pastoral scene
Of the gallant south
Them big bulging eyes
And the twisted mouth
Scent of magnolia
Clean and fresh
Then the sudden smell
Of burnin' flesh
Here is a fruit
For the crows to pluck
For the rain to gather
For the wind to suck
For the sun to rot
For the leaves to drop
Here is
Strange and bitter crop

Nina Simone Strange Fruit Comments
  1. m.... c....

Los árboles del sur dan frutos extraño
Sangre en las hojas y sangre en la raíz
Cuerpos negras balanceándose en la brisa del sure
Extraña fruta colgando de los álamo

    Escena pastoral do galante sur

  2. T.... o....

It’s very sad how people disliked this video

so haunting and a beautiful song about terror. Think about it.

  6. T.... P....

A MF’s talk about looking past it. It’s behind us. YOUR PEOPLE treated us the most evilest of ways. The entire universe will see to it that the ones with the true hate in there heart for an unknowing sacred people will pay.

  7. m.... b....

Rest in peace to all those who suffered

  8. B.... L....

There should be no comparison between Nina Simone and Billie Holiday.

  9. B.... N....

Who's here from the Snowfall finale???

  10. A.... P....

Nina sounds distressed, almost completely drained of energy with only a little left to call out in distress. Billy Holliday sounded completely disturbed and her voice highlighted the horrific nature of what happened... Both versions are incredibly powerful in their own ways. I like that they weren't sung in the same way

  11. Y.... W....

Genuinely ima say it again.... RIP MIKE BROWN😪❤️ that young boy deserves justice as do all African Americans affected by this cancerous plague called racism.. no human should endure abuse that way if there is a god I hope n pray he makes the people who did this pay. Cuz this shit hurts my soul knowing innocent people die everyday due to police n other un justified reasons that shit hurts ur soul it’s not fair

  12. C.... K....

A Jewish poet wrote a poet and Billie holiday sang it as a song. In fact she’s the original singer. The whole story behind this song is crazy

  13. Q.... N....

    God I hate homework

  14. j.... h....

Never forget, they will always have a Perpetual Hatred for us. They killed and hung us for no reason at all. It didn’t matter if you was young old man, woman, child, or even pregnant. They stole little Black Babies and fed them to Alligators for sports. If that not the works of someone Evil and Wicked. Then I don’t know what is.😡

  15. G.... T....

Its 2:26 am....Time to go to the store and buy some donuts....God Bless Us All

  16. M.... ....

So beautiful but what is this song about? I guess nobody can really know but the singer

    M.... ....

    Are you serious sir?

  17. G.... B....

    and blood at the roots.

  20. R.... H....

That was haunting. I would hate to have lived my life making other's lives pure hell only to end up there when all is said and done

  21. G.... W....

This song is so sad. It brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it. when Billie Holiday sang it at a segregated club, not an eye was left dry.

  22. L.... ....

    Be real...”snowfall” brought you here.

  23. t.... H....

You ever just see a video and then think to yourself “what might have caused people to dislike this video, there is nothing to hate in it” like it should be universally agreed that she is just speaking the truth of the horrors of segregation

    t.... H....

White People don't like to be reminded of their ancestors sins against American Descendants of Slavery (ADOS) & their own present sins against them. They enjoy & relish in it but don't like the exposure.

  24. T.... 8....

    Snowfall brought me in

  25. M.... E....

I’m here from the show “snowfall” this song is so beautiful but so heartbreaking It’s so sad What our ancestors went through

  26. N.... F....

Music as a political weapon at its best. This shows you what our black entertainers of today are not doing. Alicia Keys, John Legend, Beyonce, Usher Mariah Curry Kanye...... where you at ? Michael Jackson was politically aware in his music.

  29. J.... P....

    Amazing song! respects from Slovakia.

  30. J.... S....

Never realized the depth of this song. Brought inexplicable chills at the 1st listen. Now that I've interpreted the lyrics, man smh. Whenever you think of bringing harm to another black man/woman, play this track and I promise a change of heart

    J.... S....

Brother, I wish that were the case, but it's not. Do you see the present fight against ADOS reparations? Yet, every other group has received them, now even gays. This is a perpetual hatred. Please check out YouTube's Yvette Carnell & Antonio Moore (tonetalks) for more information.

  31. G.... B....

I was drunk and rolling up the best tree with this on repeat. Its so mesmerizing. So powerful

Phenomenal scene. And the way Skully and the Bloods walked through that courtyard armed and ready........straight gangsterism.

    C.... H....

    Amazing scene, indeed. Truly gripping.

    C.... H....

It hurts my soul knowing how many brothers died so young and being raised around that non sense I can only thank God I made it out peace to my brothers and sisters I love yall

    C.... H....

How ole boy walked passed jerome and stared him down without breaking stride. And another subtle gem if anybody caught it, when franklin pops was walking him down the stairs and franklin stumbles right as that piano note dropped.... Fucking perfect.

This song is sooo visual that I cry every time I heard this song.

  54. E.... G....

First heard this song in an episode of Cold Case, during the lynching of a young black man because he told them he was going to tell everyone what they did.

    Stayed with me.

Those same whites who hanged and tortured non whites in america, had babies and raised them to hate just like they did. The hate in their bloodlines will never die, only trickle down. Our despair is not over in this wicked country, but they love to make it seem like we are now “free”.

  58. C.... S....

You can tell she was personally touched by the lynching of young black men in the South of the USA. She may have seen it.

  59. J.... L....

If you want goosebumps, leave this song playing, and in another tab, pull up withoutsanctuary.org, and scroll through the photo gallery. It'll mess you up for days.

  62. G.... G....

    What a perfect fucking sample..

  63. B.... B....

This song used to scare me as a youth now I jus close my eyes n cry for my people n all we have and still endured. This song hurt

  64. M.... B....

When Nina sings it, it feels much much darker than Billie holidays version

This song remains to be one of the most ugliest most darkest songs I’ve ever heard

We humans are savages and lunatics

  65. G.... T....

    Haunting, poignant, beautiful.

  66. E.... U....

dea fucking god, this is a song about a time thats already past for us. STOP TRYING TO RELATE IT TO THE PRESENT. there is no lynchings happening and police brutality almost always ends on the policeman/woman being apprehended. shitty argument, nice song. lets just listen to it and not try to connect with it because we'd be grasping at straws. i shouldnt have to say this but yet here we fucking are.

  67. j.... B....

People always say Billy holiday. But this version is better to me.

  68. G.... R....

This song is beyond powerful! And to call those black bodies swinging from trees that were brutally lynched strange fruit, just brings tears to my eyes.

  69. s.... z....

    When she shouts:
“Black bodies swingin’ in the southern breeze”

just sends shivers and goosebumps down my body.
    So powerful yet heart wrenching.

  70. J.... E....

2019 and this is revolutionary!! #Wakeup

  71. S.... H....

2:20 this part is hanging on my mind just like those fruits 🖤

  72. N.... F....

Gives me chills every time I here it

  73. D.... H....

I just wanna clear my mind now, its been racing since the summertime

  74. m.... O....

Cant imagine the suffer and the pain that the african american have been through. Every time i remember that there is a human who faced discrimination because of his/her skin colour l feel shame and angery. RIP for all the peaple who lost their lives while standing for their right in having equality.

  75. T.... A....

I can’t stop listening to this song because it’s painfully haunting yet beautiful sang n played

Kanye west blood on the leaves

  78. A.... F....

And we still going through this just in a different way

  79. C.... C....

The reason this song is so Horrifying is because it was made at the time of these terrible things. It’s a memory America wants to forget. We can’t forget those who died, though because without them who knows where we would be today. It’s a scary thought.

  80. I.... V....

Cant stop tears from falling from this song. So hurtful thinking of my family and what my grandmother went thru even my father back in Virginia

  81. B.... 0....

God, that gradual descent of her voice... Haunting.

  87. D.... R....

I'm only 36 and I feel wut Nina was singing about... R.I.H. to all my ancestors who met a horrible fate that wrote this song so generations like mine will NEVER ever forget..

  88. A.... K....

Thank you Nina for your sacrifice for giving a voice to the voiceless. For exposing the ugly face of racism.
Shame on IzraHell for its murderous occupation of Palestine. Shame on the USA for supporting the Israeli Apartheid!
When will America wash the blood off its hands?

  89. A.... R....

    Powerful!!!

  90. S.... ....

I would gladly write a whole essay about this song.

  91. 4.... Y....

Negroes who were enslaved and scattered throughout the four corners of the Earth by way of slave ships are the real Israelites that you read about in the Bible. Deuteronomy 28: 15-68 outlines the curses that were placed upon the children of Israel for breaking the covenant; Psalm 83 exposes the nations who hid our identity; and Joel chapter 3 describes what will happen to those nations who sold and scattered The Most High's chosen seed. Shalom.

    4.... Y....

    I need to know more

    4.... Y....

400 Years Awakening thank you finally somebody with some knowledge and not simping about slavery!!! I get that what happened to us was horrible but we can’t forget about the black nobility and the black rulership of Europe and where this hatred that the white man has for us came from they will never forget how they were treated under the black nobility a lot of whites will never forget that!! Not to mention the Jews a.k.a. the khazars who saw that the most high disconnected from us because of our sin and decided to try to take up a spot as rulers in this world i.e. the bankers the media executives are all khazars are the fake 13th tribe Jews you could look it up the document is proudly. Slavery was but it Chris put on us like this man said read Deuteronomy 28 that will mess you up more than the song ever will

  92. C.... C....

    I loved Nina Simone.

  93. R.... L....

Many singers feign emotions, some are really good at it. Some signers sing with actual emotions. And then there are rarest of cases, like with Nina, when the voice is the emotion. No translation or interpretation, just the actual feels.

  94. N.... N....

I absolutely adored this song for years. I was all ways listening to billie holiday singing it. only today i found nina’s version.
you see, english is not my first language and for all this years I never quite listened to lyrics. just the magnificent melody. somehow nina’s version has made me hear the lyrics better. so i thought about meaning behind them. and now i finally got it.
oh god, my heart broke for everyone who suffered from lynching in south. it’s just... i have no words 🥺

  95. g.... w....

First time really listening to this

  96. C.... S....

I’m not over sensitive BUT this song push me to the edge thinking about what my ancestors went thru Idgaf I HATE WHITE PEOPLE!! Fuc em all 🖕🏼🖕🏼🖕🏼istg I’m ready for one to try me

    R.... H....

Raib Hobbs look I’m white I think? Idk my dads from Israel so I don’t really know but what our ancestors did wasn’t right it wasn’t ok but we aren’t them and you can’t treat us like we are white people helped slaves each safe house had white people along the underground rail road they could die for protecting them and they didn’t care they helped and we are all human so how about you don’t make me what my ancestors did because I’m not them just like you aren’t them
