Nilsson, Harry - Joy Lyrics

The other day I met a girl named Joy
She said come here,
I'm gonna make you my joy boy
Well, things went good and things went bad
Now everytime I think of Joy
It makes me sad
It makes me... sad
The other day I met a girl named Joy
She said Roy!
I'm gonna make you my joy boy
Well, she took me for a ride
Sort of a joy ride
Now everytime I think of Joy
I get all weird inside
Oh, Joy to the world
Was a beautiful girl
But to me Joy meant only sorrow
Now--if you haven't got an answer
Then you haven't got a question
And if you never had a question
Then you'd never have a problem
But if you never had a problem
Well, everyone would be happy
But if everyone was happy
There'd never be a love song
Joy was a beautiful girl
But to me Joy meant only sorrow
The other day I met a girl named Joy
She said, Come here,
I wanna make you feel all clammy inside
Things went good good and things went bad
Things went good... things went bad
Good, bad, good, bad, good, bad
Joy to the world
Was a beautiful girl
But to me Joy meant only sorrow
Oh, Joy to the world
Was a beautiful girl
But to me Joy meant only sorrow
Joy, I know you're out there
I want you to turn on your radio and listen to my song

Well Harry thanks for the great c&w song. Perfection was your stile .

  13. e.... G....

Yeah, kudos to most responses (the nice, lucid ones). But the approach, especially with the Floyd Cramer piano style and word play just makes this effective. BTW, I think it was Nicky Hopkins who did that piano (bless him). Jeez, did he have that down or what. I dunno. You look it up and complain to somebody if this is wrong.

    Floyd Cramer? Huh?

I don't know too much about Harry Nilsson's work but I can see he must have been one of the most inventive song writers of his time, who can come up with this sort of witty lyrics, the only one I can think of is Weird Al Yankovic and he does parodies.

    s.... ....

Good point there. But those singer song writers are a sad rarity especially for those of us who need a good laugh. :)

  36. s.... ....

I know the tale of Nilsson is tragic but we all need to remember that the last 15 years of his life was very happy for him!! In love and 5 more children becoming a loving father and husband!!

  37. s.... ....

  44. S.... F....

I used to listen to this and other songs of his alot.

  45. B.... H....

The only country song worth listening to!!!

  46. J.... S....

    so cool...

  47. b.... j....

I got this album when I was 13. My older brother was dating a girl named Joy and they had just broken up. The whole family rolled on the floor laughing when this song came on.

  48. S.... H....

This song is hilarious....kind of reminds me of something off of Ween's 12 Golden Country Greats.

  49. j.... ....

Harry was alcoholic..He loved music..I suspect it was a way to be someone else. He worked in a bank and passed by the building that had recording booths and decided to go in and play piano...He did some studio work there until he figured he could quit the bank. His music was appreciated worldwide. Glad he found a way to give of himself and create controversy. Thanks for posting the music.

  50. D.... F....

I actually heard this on a country station!

  51. A.... L....

I love it when someone smugly "psycho-analyzes" creative artists. Yeah, we're screwed up, but then again, those who aren't social "misfits" of some form or another rarely produce ANYTHING memorable. They're too busy psychoanalyzing others to develop their own creative side.

  52. K.... ....

  53. W.... W....

I think Harry was a classic depressed, codependent. This is why many of his songs were about brokenhearted relationships, with kind of a confused "what happened?" bent to them. I totally relate with many of his lyrics. I don't think he ever did figure it out. He blessed us with his music but so sad for him.

  54. A.... B....

If you haven't got an answer, then you haven't got a question. If you never had a question, then you'd never have a problem. If you never had a problem, well then everyone would be happy. But if everyone was happy, there'd never be a love song.

  55. C.... H....

Which is why I only date women named 'Severe Irreversible Depression'.

  56. B.... H....

Darn, I wanted to send him a card ;p

  57. J.... ....

No, a different Randy but I'm not going to give his last name.

  58. B.... H....

    Newman? :D

  59. J.... ....

    No, his name is Randy.

  60. B.... H....

    Was his name Roy? ;p

  61. J.... ....

Thanks for posting this. A friend played this for me in 1975. My name is Joy & I felt like I was listening to an obscene phone call (no, it's not obscene, but that's how I felt). Anyway, I think it's funny.
