Nile - Age Of Famine Lyrics

There is no place in the upper kingdom
not blighted with plague and famine
The bones of corpses stripped of flesh litter our towns
The desert reclaims the land
Corrupt winds of pestilence and contagion
Sicken the air with piteous lamentations of despair

No living creature great or small is safe from the starving and the desperate

Decades of drought
Seven years without rain or annual flood
The black earth is in ruins, cursing the unfed masses
Reserves of grain exhausted
Cities choked with sand
Roving hordes of the starving and emaciated
Scour the streets for what scraps they can scavenge

Even insects and vermin fear to tread our cities
Starving humans migrate like swarms of locusts
Eating carrion corpses dogs, human excrement, animal dung

The poor are forced to commit unheard of atrocities
Noble women beg to become slaves and whores
Children are dashed against walls
Infants are roasted on high ground

Those entombed are unearthed
Violating the royal dead
What the pyramid concealed is defiled
Lawlessness unchecked, chaos unopposed
The land is deprived of kingship

No refuge for the old the young
The weak the malnourished
The diseased sick who are left along to die
As the just and unjust alike descend into wickedness
And ravenously turn on each other
The age of famine is upon us

What makes this song really creepy is that it's based on reality, Karl originally wrote the song about the 1201-07 drought in Egypt, which was really terrible, but he started doing more research and discovered along with recent excavations that have done showed that drought that came at the end of the Old Kingdom around 2200 BC was far worse, this was the age of the pyramids, ended abruptly when the monsoon rains stopped and annual Nile flood ceased causing something like a 20-30 year drought and famine!! The central government pretty much collapsed when they realized the Pharoah was not a god and didn't control shit! the pyramids were built on the belief that HE controlled the weather and made the annual flood possible so when the drought and famine came, Egypt went into total chaos and you can imagine what happened, kinda like The Walking Dead but without the Zombies and they actually found a pillar in this old town they discovered years ago when a local Governor at that period had it documented exactly what had been happening, his area became sort of an Ancient refugee camp and he heard all the horror stories from the people who were coming there from other towns that were abandoned, so as a bit of self promotion and giving the middle finger to the lack of authority from whatever Pharoah was still ruling at the time, he claim that in HIS area, nobody starved, nobody had to eat their children to survive, which had happened in other areas and all kinds of other fucked up shit! So the lyrics of this song is pretty much describing what that Governor had written on the pillar they found, gruesome shit! the entire nation of Egypt was in a state of depression and dispair, the only reason they survived i guess was because that Governor and other leaders like him had to
step up to get shit back in order again, of course the Pharoahs couldn't give any fucks, but their powers diminished anyway, nobody was building anymore pyramids for them after this!

yah also that pharaoh had apparently been ruling for like 90 odd years and was old as shit and possibly couldn't hold the state together. It was basically a 200 year dark age until the middle period started. nothing was more brutal than ancient egypt apparently. EATING CARRION CORPSES DOGS HUMAN EXCREMENT ANIMAL DUUUUUUUNG

To us, it is the resultant sound; to them, it is the physical act of playing in time.

As they're just a few friends who jam together, it's a wonder they "repeat themselves" infrequently as they do...I think they do a great job of evolving the instrument-playing while keeping each new record undeniably NILE.
