Nik Kershaw - Billy Lyrics
Billy is a new man,
He does the best he can
To figure out what it's about
And what the hell he's meant to be.
He does the right thing when expected,
Once in a while he likes a smoke and a joke,
Just as long as it's P.C.
And he thinks that he cries at the movies
'Cause he's in touch with his feminine side.
Sally wants a proud man
Sally wants a proud man
Sally wants a proud man
'Cause she's taken all his pride.
Billy is a new man, at least when she's around
He'll be mother for the day,
He watches "Men Behaving Badly"
Though he'll gladly switch it off
If she's offended
He'll pretend it wasn't funny anyway
He's got one face he keeps for his woman
And one for when he's out with the guys
Sally wants a true man
Sally wants a true man
Sally wants a true man
But he's living out a lie
Better go and find an analyst, or something.
Time for sorting out his head.
Better go and find the book to read about it
Just like his daddy never did.
And he reads Marie Claire at the Doctors,
Just in case there is something he should know.
Sally wants a free man
Sally wants a free man
Sally wants a free man
But she will not let him go.
Billy is confused,
He feels abusive and abused.
He's got his one hand on an olive branch,
The other on his crotch.
He drives a sensible coupé,
He thinks Oasis are OK.
He drinks non-alcoholic lager though
He'd rather have a scotch.
And he tries very hard to be happy,
But there's a few little things in the way.
'Cause Billy wants a good girl
And a bad girl
And a blonde girl
And a brunette
Or a Bond Girl
And a house maid
And a tease maid
And a French maid,
Yeah, a sex aid,
And a Goddess
And a confidante,
A wet nurse and an agony aunt,
A lover, mother, baby sitter,
A young girl with a pretty face
And smart
But not too smart to love an asshole,
Yes, an asshole.
Billy wants to be an asshole.
Singin'
Billy wants it all now
Billy wants it all now
Billy wants it all now
But he's too ashamed to say.
Sally wants a Superman
Sally wants a Superman
Sally wants a Superman
She hasn't got a chance.

Lyrics:
Billy is a new man,
He does the best he can
To figure out what it's about
And what the hell he's meant to be
He does the right thing when expected,
'Nuff respect,
Once in a while he likes a smoke and a joke,
Just as long as it's P.C.
And he thinks that he cries at the movies
'Cause he's in touch with his feminine side
Sally wants a proud man
Sally wants a proud man

Perceptive & descriptive way beyond the mundane.. .. .. ... djc
Really good song. Shame about the 'Men Behaving Badly' reference though, as it dates the song a bit, so too the 'Oasis' reference.
Excellent contemporary singer/songwriting
NIK KERSHAW you're the best.....
Brilliant rock with a touch of country. Sensitive lyrics and Leslie Hammond with good measure of distortion guitar yet acoustic guitar cuts thru the mix. Another masterpiece by Mr. K
502 words in this song.. Brilliant... :-)
He drives a sensible coupe, he thinks Oasis are OK,
he drinks non alcoholic lager though he'd rather drink a scotch
"15 Minutes" is a great album from the first track to the last.
Couldn't agree more...
Brilliant, talented and very underrated singer-songwriter. I'd like to see him live someday but i don't know if he's ever gonna tour around Europe. ;(
You're so lucky!
Talk with local fans and keep an eye on smaller venues, I'm from Denmark and he's doing two dates here. Going in 8 days. I'd never heard about the venue before or been there. I'm going a totally new place to see Nik for the first time. Don't give up. And if not, try to ally with other fans from your country. Create a demand
This is brilliant songwriting, and by far my fave from the album. However "Have a Nice Life" is the album's tearjerker.
For me, Shine On is a bigger tear jerker, maybe because I relate to it's message so closely (as I think a lot of men do).
I love this Song...
This is a great song. There's another song by Nik Kershaw called 'James Cagney' which deals with similar expectations of men.
+otakurocklee James Cagney is one of my "all time favorit"...
Musicians can geek out on this but there are some cool points about this same theme that crops up several times in Nik's discography. http://www.patrickdailly.f9.co.uk/KERSHAW.htm
like a lot of males...
Another one of Nik's songs that proves to me that he's head and shoulders above most other singer- songwriters.
@45insite To compensate for his actual height x) ...ok, all joking aside, I agree.
That actually brought a tear to my eyes. I was listening to this on series and suddenly realised my heart was in my throat. Good stuff
I think it's less about a bad marriage and more about a guy who just shouldn't have gotten married at all, to anyone, at least not at the time of his life when he did. He has been dishonest with himself and now he is paying a big price.
And yeah, that's what a guitar solo should be.
Kershaw really caught the spirit of the times with this track. The contradictions between what we think we should be and what we are... brilliant.
@felixq78 i had read somewer that this song was based on true friends of his. however you're right, Kershaw made a genius out of this song. pity its so under rated
@Frobe1357 you're welcome!
