A brilliant song, I'm guessing, about death. Which occupies my mind constantly. This guy got screwed by time. He was a great songwriter. He never got the chance to mature, but he did a lot in his allotted time.

It's not about death in my opinion. It's our timeless existential questioning about the nature of realty and our place within it where no reply to the question is ever given. The notion of the 'time of no reply' becomes an veritable answer to the question and a call to accept and be a part of this reality.

Now we are in crossing season time, august give place to september and this is the perfect song for that

Pretty sure these lyrics are where David Kilgour got the idea for "Golden Crown" for his band The Clean. He's a noted Nick Drake fan.
