Nick Drake - Parasite Lyrics

Lifting the mask from a local clown, feeling down like him
Seeing the light in a station bar and traveling far in sin
Sailing downstairs to the northern line, watching the shine of his shoes
Hearing the trials of the people there, who's to care if they lose?

Take a look, you may see me on the ground
For I am the parasite of this town

Dancing a jig in a church with chimes, a sign of the times today
Hearing no bell from a steeple tall, people all in dismay
Falling so far on a silver spoon, making the moon for fun
Changing a robe for a size too small, people all get hung

Take a look, you might see me coming through
For I am the parasite who travels two-by-two

I'm lifting the mask from a local clown, feeling down like him
And I'm seeing the light in a station bar and traveling far in sin
And I'm sailing downstairs to the northern line, watching the shine of his shoes
And hearing the trials of the people there, who's to care if they lose?

Take a look, you might see me on the ground
For I am the parasite of this town
Take a look, you may see me in the dirt
For I am the parasite who hangs from your skirt

  12. G.... O....

This genius was deeply depressed and did at most a couple dozen gigs a few years before this album. Thank goodness for recorded sound.

  13. V.... ....

7 A.M. Leaving out of New Orleans for L.A. in my old beater car, hungover, demoralized, just about broke with no prospects...this song comes on the radio. Perfect!

    V.... ....

Vince - so descriptive. Permanently left my home state of Louisiana to watch these Northern Skies full of snow. Always with Nick Drake.

    V.... ....

    Serendipitous

  14. L.... M....

This is the song that can actually hit me in the feels

  15. D.... N....

Cover looks like freemasonry art symbols.

    D.... N....

    Daily News Grind how so??

    D.... N....

    yes how so

    D.... N....

The symbolism & the positions of the symbolism. That's what it reminds me of.

  16. J.... L....

Its unexplainable how much i love this song

  17. S.... M....

nicks heavy lyrics can only be lifted by his soft, melancholic singing and masterful guitarplaying. thats why no cover of his songs can come near to carrying the same emotional impact to the original.

  18. M.... M....

reminds me Song to the siren by Tim Buckley a little

  19. T.... S....

Thank you pop arena for turning me onto this song. If Animorphs ever comes back on TV or film they need to use this song.

  20. J.... A....

I can't believe how ahead of his time this work is if you told someone this was Dave Mathews new album they would say it was great.

    J.... A....

    Dave Mathews blows

    J.... A....

    That can be arranged

  22. P.... B....

Is it me or Nick Cave really inspired himself on Nick?

    P.... B....

rowland s howard seems more like he'd be the one inspired by nick drake

  23. L.... L....

This and Black Eyed Dog are two of the most emotionally honest songs ever written about depression.

    L.... L....

"Tow the Line" his final recorded song is far more emotionally charged I think.

  24. C.... A....

il y a vraiment quelque chose d'angélique en lui... au sens premier du terme.

  25. S.... M....

for me, one of the best tracks

    S.... M....

My fav prac. even tho theres a lot of good songs

  26. Z.... R....

Seriously, this is so beautiful for my ears.

  27. W.... ....

Does this song have a 3/4 or 4/4 time signature? I can't tell.

    W.... ....

    @Spencer Lewis wut, no

    W.... ....

    @Oatmate hahah trolling buddy

    W.... ....

@Spencer Lewis haha, riverman is 5/4 tho

    W.... ....

@Oatmate that it is , and that's my favorite nick song

    W.... ....

it's definitely an even rhythm, 4/4. But the verse has 5 bars (or 10, depends on counting), that feels unevenly.

  28. m.... g....

A visual musical artist of his generation, just like great painters had their muses, great musicians have theirs. Thanks Nick x

  29. b.... ....

An utterly unique voice and guitar chording. It's a bleak song, lyrically and melodically but beautiful, words like precious and exquisite come to mind. He shouldn't have gone so young

  30. F.... D....

Radiohead's Subterannean Homesick Alien have almost the same exact chord progression;.. Nick Drake is a really great artist, and Pink Moon is my favorite Drake's album.

    F.... D....

    paulph12002 a scholar and a gentleman

    F.... D....

@paulph12002 you are a pretentious asshole who's ignorant and arrogant enough to think his opinion is more than an opinion. Go do something worthy in your life before shitting all over other people's art who are light years ahead of you when it comes to art. Piece of shit

    F.... D....

@paulph12002 chill out lmao, he didn't say he's copying Radiohead in any way.

    F.... D....

@Jules Gilmour I think you just bailed Paul out of becoming the biggest asshole in this comment section

    F.... D....

@paulph12002 truly, nick drakes' fans' strange elitism and eagerness to dismiss other musicians knows no bounds

  31. O.... O....

    Love you Nick.

  32. P.... A....

    Genious...

  33. t.... ....

the demo version of this is much better in my opinion, it's very raw.

  34. t.... ....

  35. e.... ....

    Just great.
