Nick Drake - Fruit Tree Lyrics

Fame is but a fruit tree
So very unsound
It can never flourish
Till its stalk is in the ground
So men of fame
Can never find a way
Till time has flown
Far from their dying day

Forgotten while you're here
Remembered for a while
A much updated rain
From a much updated style

Life is but a memory
Happened long ago
Theatre full of sadness
For a long forgotten show

Seems so easy
Just to let it go on by
Till you stop and wonder
Why you never wondered why
Safe in a womb of an everlasting night
You find the darkness can give the brightest light

Safe in your place deep in the earth
That's when they'll know
What you are really worth

Forgotten while you're here
Remembered for a while
A much updated rain
From a much updated style

Fame is but a fruit tree
So very unsound
It can never flourish
Till its stalk is in the ground
So men of fame can never find a way
Till time has flown far from their dying day

Fruit tree
Fruit tree
No one knows you but the rain and the air
Don't you worry
They'll stand and stare when you're gone

Fruit tree
Fruit tree
Open your eyes to another year
They will know that you were here
when you are gone

"Fruit Tree" by Nick Drake (19 June 1948 – 25 November 1974), one of the standout tracks from his debut album "Five Leaves Left," released in 1969. It seems almost prophetic, given the circumstances of his premature death. Today would have been his 70th birthday by the way.
    Lyrics:
Fame is but a fruit tree
    So very unsound.
    It can never flourish
‘til its stock is in the ground
    So men of fame
    Can never find a way
    ‘til time has flown
    Far from their dying day

    Forgotten while you’re here
    Remembered for a while
    A much updated ruin
    From a much outdated style

Absolutely error free lyrics. Thanks Thunder 👍

    Bahram Kheradmand

@DickDitty I think Stock should have been Stalk, and Truly worth should be Really worth.

    DickDitty

It would have read better that way, I wonder how it would have worked audibly though. 👍

    Caitlyn Johnston

"Stalk". 'Til It's stalk is in the ground.

    DickDitty

@Caitlyn Johnston Stalk:of course; thanks Caitlyn.

  25. Amanda Hincapie

this feel like a suicide note. :-(

    robertdanielmaher

No I think it was a prophetic vision. Not a death wish. He could just see how his music/life was going to play out.

  27. Samuel Maia

    Beautiful!

  28. John Goodwin

I was sat around a campfire this summer past. Im 51. Silence. Then a young guy, looks like a doorman (yeah ok), accepts a guitar and begins to gently sing this song as if possessed with the spirit of the entire crowd of us, enthralled in the semi darkness. I did not know the song, although i had heard ND records once or twice and dismissed them. Convinced me then that the context, the lack of a 'pedestal' etc etc were worthy of more consideration than my superficial, selfish non entity usually manages. Tales from the Firepit.

    John Goodwin Wow.
