Nick Drake - From The Morning Lyrics

A day once dawned and it was beautiful
A day once dawned from the ground
Then the night she fell and the air was beautiful
The night she fell all around

So look, see the days
The endless coloured ways
And go play the game that you learned
From the morning

And now we rise and we are everywhere
And now we rise from the ground
And see she flies, and she is everywhere
See she flies all around

So look, see the sights
The endless summer nights
And go play the game that you learned
From the morning

you can almost bet nick lacked much confidence I know how it is......he probably didn't know how great he was ive heard this from so many songwriters who clued me in and although I'm very hard on myself still I learned to accept my work at some point !! nick needed a best friend starting with himself its hard to do blees his heart

What is there to say Nick when you said it all in your songs

  17. S.... ....

this song and albums got me through more than I care to admit

  18. T.... E....

I recently watched a documentary on Nick Drake because I really like Folk and acoustic rock. Not knocking it but I do not get it. The lyrics, the sound, anything. Is he a legend because he was presumed to commit suicide at a young age ? Every song I listened to has a dull almost monotone vibe to it. Like I said, I don't get it.

  19. D.... C....

It's actually a song about his battle with depression and so beautiful

  20. C.... D....

First time I heard Nick Drake, I heard Riverman and this. 10 minutes later im in a record shop in sheffield with a near maxed out student overdraft credit card, spending £70 for all his albums on vinyl. Best decision ever. I stole food from flatmates to make up the difference.

  21. D.... S....

Without a shadow of a doubt the best song he ever wrote the meaning of this so is so powerfull his mum even loved this song so much she engraved on his gravestone " now we rise we are everywhere " such a moving song rip nick your one of a kind

I visited his grave site in 2017. There were 2 bikers there as well. We all had tears in our eyes.
The back of the gravestone had the lyrics “ And now we rise, and we are everywhere”.

    M.... ....

    Where is he buried ?

    M.... ....

B G The churchyard in Tanworth-in-Arden. I hope I spelled that correctly. It was during a trip to the UK and was on my ‘must do’ list.

    M.... ....

The bikers were likely there for the grave of Mike Hailwood.

This song is the late summer nights standing in the yard with your dad. This song is the early mornings waiting for the love of your life to walk out her front door. It is the energy of cicadas & crickets buzzing in the hot florida air. It is the moonlight guiding you across fields of flowers with no end in sight but the warm earth floor touching your feet. It is life telling you; it's alright.

  35. E.... J....

I do not know how I grew up and did not know about Nick Drake. I was fourteen years old when he died. I guess I was not into music yet at that age or the station I had access to just didn't play it. At nineteen I began playing guitar while in the Air Force. Mostly out of boredom using my dorm roommates guitar because he sure never did! Later I bought my own acoustic, a Lotus made in Korea. I still have it. Pitch black. Nice sound. I have others too but the point is when I found Nick I cried mostly because I'm just like him in so many ways, a private shy musician that can't even really play in public that well. Nick got a lot of complaints about long tunings and nothing going on but when he was gone I suppose they found it worth the wait. My cats get most of the best acts in my life! :-) I feel like we just get the tip of the iceberg with Nick also and that maybe if his walls could speak we'd hear the really really great stuff! Not that this isn't, just saying.. And here I thought I was the only one picking out weird patterns in weird tunings using old strings! Mine are multi years old! Just can't get the same sound otherwise! I fully understand Nick! Love his music. Thanks for sharing this. I'm figuring it out to play it now!

Drake was a genius, a true musical master. His precision is a work of beauty and his lyricism reflects the art, pain, joy and sorrow of this world. He was a good man and was taken far too soon. Thank you so much for helping me these past few months, Nick. I miss you every day.

  58. M.... ....

A truly beautiful classic from Nick Drake. It always reminds me of 'Both Sides Now' by Joni Mitchell, they both have a similar sound.

It is difficult not to just echo Nick's words. His music is not limited by time or place. It is everywhere and in all times. It is about the soul.

  64. J.... ....

    This life is a game.

    J.... ....

  67. C.... 4....

It feels like there are so many moments that don't really matter, but then when I hear this song I think, I am glad I lived, just so I could feel this way when listening to this song.

  68. l.... ....

did he actually write this song himself? most sources state he did, but I saw on Google when I searched for the lyrics that it lists Walter N Afanasieff and Kenny Gorelick as the songwriters. just confused and wondering if anyone knows about this

    l.... ....

Yes he wrote it. Kenny Gorelick is the saxophonist Kenny G. He covered this song. I'm not sure why there are sources showing him as a writer of it.

  69. F.... A....

I want this played at my funeral.

  70. H.... A....

Just finished reading Darker Than The Deepest Sea: the Search for Nick Drake and apparently in this recording of From the Morning, his finger slipped somewhere near the end of the song; before he would've redid the whole song before but he was in such a state of despair and the rest of the recording was good so they kept it. I've tried listening and I just can't tell when that happens. Maybe because I don't play guitar so I don't know how to spot an error. Anyways, anyone know the time stamp for the slip up? Just curious.

  71. V.... K....

Nick Drake is to music what van Gogh is to painting

    V.... K....

Three LPs all brilliant in their own different way

  72. H.... A....

This song moves me. To tears, to another dimension. He describes the feelings and thoughts I have but was never able to communicate or verbalize them. I believe Nick Drake was a very special soul; we were gifted with his message and impact decades after his beautiful yet fleeting life. The thing that saddens me the most is that Nick has such a massive and imperative impact on so many people nowadays, and he never lived to see it. He died thinking he had failed. He didn't. Maybe somewhere in this vast universe, he sees, and he knows. One can surely hope so. RIP Nick Drake.
    "Now we rise
    And we are everywhere"

    H.... A....

Heather Autumn That's such a beautiful comment. I wish he could have seen how loved he and his music became.

  73. M.... C....

His style of playing guitar is magnificent. The right hand development of each song sets him apart from anyone else. He gave such beautiful music to us in his short life.

  85. R.... L....

The last song on nicks final album. Maybe he knew this was it. This song makes me feel like the end of something and the beginning of another all at once

    R.... L....

Robert London Well spotted. Lovely song

    R.... L....

Robert London Wow maybe! They say our soul knows deep down when it's time to pass.

  86. .... ....

A day once dawned, and it was beautiful.

Coming from such a tortured soul, still more potent, still more haunting—reveals perhaps some latent beauty in worldly nature, and some latent sense of it in Nick and in human nature.

I've not yet heard a better line in any song.

  87. E.... ....

What a phenomenal song to be uploaded to youtube while it was still so very young

11 years since the upload, Nick's music will always be immortal! I always find myself coming back to his music.

  91. D.... S....

ive loved music all my life, im 55, and theres nobody better than nick drake. :)

  92. J.... H....

Do people just "thumb down" a song because it doesn't happen to fall in line with their own personal taste in music ... I can perhaps see a metal fan or a rap fan not particularly liking Nick Drake, but why thumb down a great song by an artist who was absolutely brilliant at what he did and whose music appeals to so many? Hard to understand ... just listen for a few seconds, and move on if it's not your taste.

    J.... H....

hi, I'm a HUGE metal fan and nerd, and I LOVE Nick Drake.
Like, I mainly listen to Technical death metal.

But this song is super experimental and emotionally-moving. The tuning on this song allows for the chord progression in this song to flourish particularly, and the lyrical content is again very moving and deep. I am so intrigued by that.

    J.... H....

Black metal fan reporting in, still enjoy

    J.... H....

Judson Hair Don't understand! Nick is special He is a heavenly splendour.

    J.... H....

Maybe they resent the commercialization of the song. It's still a beautiful piece of music.

    J.... H....

    Love grindcore love this album

  93. j.... c....

Tripping balls listening to this crying

  94. D.... ....

That first Fairport Convention record was made mostly of covers of currently popular American music - and then Richard Thompson, spurred perhaps by The Band's reinterpretation of America's bounteous musical heritage, lead a re-appreciation of traditional music of the British Isles by its inheritors. What was needed at that point, to consolidate that shift of focus, was an infusion of new and quintessentially English music. It was right there, and at just the right time - it just didn't get noticed until later.

  95. M.... L....

'Nick Drake' or 'Sufjan Stevens', who cares they are both genius song writers, writing from a tortured soul, both make me cry and I am a bloke

    M.... L....

i am from america and i still say aye. :)

    M.... L....

You're correct. Who the hell cares about Sufjan Stevens.

    M.... L....

Catriona Davidson ay man Sufjan is really good. Also Elliott Smith should be mentioned

    M.... L....

Elliott Smith, too. Can’t forget that legend either.

  96. J.... A....

"From the morning" is probably one of my favorite songs ever. I have a ukulele cover in my channel. Feel free to check it out.

  97. B.... K....

I like the fact that the final song on the last album recorded in Nick Drake's lifetime was actually a song of hope and inspiration!

    B.... K....

all his songs are, its just most obvious here.

    B.... K....

@Ethan Braga He's yearning for the ability to return to the simplicity of childhood, metaphorically called 'the morning'.

    B.... K....

Diomedes22 valid point... I thought of that too but I couldn’t figure out what he kept referring to as ‘she’

    B.... K....

It's common, for me anyway, to be in writhing pain and attempt to conjure beautiful/hopeful imagery from my psyche, whether I have an outlet or not, whether it's futile or not. That's when I listen to this song and ones like it.

    B.... K....

So 'up', such a beautiful tune
