this song has so much attached to it. this entire album does, in fact. whenever i listen to it, it's like receiving a punch directly to the gut. it's associated with the smell of cinnamon-apple air fresheners,
a late summer breeze through old creaky windows, subtitled films, red wine, lavender flowers, falsified friendships. it reminds me of me finding my gumption, steeling my stomach, expressing my sentiment. it reminds me of being knocked back with a simple "oh, we're not even friends." as i sat perched on his windowsill, he on the easy chair below me, when he said that, the very first thing that came to my mind was from "lay me low" from this same album: "come crawl up here baby and i'll
show you how it works/if you wanna be my friend and you wanna repent/and you want it all to win/and you wanna know when."

apparently it was just toleration and niceties to give 25$ bottles of wine or fresh-picked lavender flowers or to grab me around the waist. it was just a nicety when we were in the garden and you grabbed my hand as we looked to see if the liquor store was still open at half-past 11 in late august. i remember the crickets and flowery breeze and me trying to pull myself up on the monkey bars wearing a skirt and flats, and i remember you trying to lift me up.

but that's all it was, not even friendship, just him being nice. it was around 10pm when on 28 october i left his dorm room, and ran back into mine. i called my friend and broke down sobbing, and then laid awake for the next three hours listening to "let love in." it's been over a year now, but it's still incredibly tender. i'm not burned out on the album, but it's just too damn hard to listen to sometimes. it brings back too many memories. i don't regret having the experiences in the end, because it has made me me, but it still brings back an awful cold weight in my gut.

i still get a nasty feeling in my gut when i see him around campus. it's not butterflies. it's a nervous
nausea, spurred on by blissful weeks of leading me on with lies, gifting me things, watching old russian war movies and me helping him with his english homework. it was the first time i have ever liked anyone. it was surreal. i can vividly recall just sitting in front of one of the big picture windows on the top floor of the dorm building and listening to this song, just... thinking. feeling. experiencing. i don't know.

so i would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart, nick cave. this song is beyond expressive, beyond memorable, beyond priceless for me. it hurts to listen to, but it got me through a lot. i related to it. it was a balm for my wounds that i nursed from october to may. it scared me so. this album got me through a lot of mental turmoil. it's a work of art and i will treasure it forever.

Thank you for sharing something so raw and heart wrenching and visceral. Love really does make a fool of us all, especially at uni, and Nick comforts us in our sad fuck times like no other artist can. I hope time heals you further and that you continue to have those unreal, gorgeous moments with someone who values you more than that guy was capable of doing.

This whole album is an absolutely perfect work of sonic art. It's so primal and connected to every human experience of love it's spine-tingling. Top volume is the only way with this. A masterpiece.

This album resonates to me in a very primal way,I remember hearing this at  the age of eighteen for the first time and I was totally mesmerized from the first fuckin note. The word genius is generally thrown around too lightly but in case of mr.Cave its definetely a well fitting description!
