Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Anthrocene Lyrics

All the fine winds gone
And this sweet world is so much older
Animals pull the night around their shoulders
Flowers fall to their naked knees
Here I come now, here I come
I hear you been out there looking for something to love
The dark force that shifts at the edge of the tree
It's alright, it's alright
When you turn so long and lovely, it's hard to believe
That we're falling now in the name of the Anthrocene

All the things we love, we love, we love, we lose
It's our bodies that fall when they try to rise
And I hear you been looking out for something to love

Sit down beside me and I'll name it for you
Behold, behold
The heaven bound sea
The wind cast its shadow and moves for the tree
Behold the animals and the birds and the sky entire
I hear you been out there looking for something to set on fire
The head bow children fall to their knees
Humbled in the age of the Anthrocene

Here they come now, here they come
Are pulling you away
There are powers at play more forceful than we
Come over here and sit down and say a short prayer
A prayer to the air, the air that we breathe
And the astonishing rise of the Anthrocene

Come on now, come on now
Hold your breath while you're safe
It's a long way back and I'm begging you please
To come home now, come home now

Well, I heard you been out looking for something to love
Close your eyes, little worm
And brace yourself

  5. Oscar Guerriero

  6. Chris Connolly

Nick Cave's song "Anthrocene" sounds and feels Like an out of body experience. The song sounds like a tragedy is happening like the end of the world is happening and everything is disintegrating and being raptured.......The two songs throughout this whole entire world I would choose to Die to....would be "And All That Could Have been" by Nine Inch Nails and "Anthrocene" by Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds.Hands down. Just imagine being high listening to this song.

  7. Zvezdan Jasovic

Such a masterpiece.. I was blown away on first listening and still i am.. I mean these loops, these strings or pads i dont know how they produce this sounds. Amazing.. Usually when bands get older they start to suck, but these people are just getting better and better.. True artists..

  8. Dan Bloom

"We all live in the yellow Anthrocene, the yellow Anthrocene, the yellow Anthrocene....'' -- a climate protest anthem .  If you like the tune and words -- "the mean streets of the Anthrocene" -- spread it around. George H

    Και λίγα λες. :)

  10. Ridley Roid

One of the few cave songs that's worse when performed live. Still the entire concert was the best i've ever seen, and i've seen my fair share of bands.

  11. GravityBoy72

    Amazing.
Who would have guessed this could be a show opener.
It was superb last night at Manchester.

  12. ezequiel patricia

    one more time with feeling!

  13. Carlos Guarany

Just imagining a mashup of this song with 21st century poem from Leftfield

  14. PrivateSchemers1

The lines between Cave and Radiohead continue to blur.

    Jo Thomas

The lines between Radiohead and Blur continue to cave. *I'm so sorry*

    Pogn Illat

    The line begins to blur

Nick is an artist's artist. The Skeleton Tree and One More Time With Feeling DVD is a serious, introspective work. Anyone looking for a Cave redux or Murder Ballad should know by now that Nick doesn't repeat himself. Enjoy his latest tour de force.

    ThinLynottFan

Dan Vieira Where did you copy that from?

    D V

it was just a personal comment

  16. November

I can't stand Nick Cave, which is not to say he's not an exceptional artist. It's just not my thing, but generally I've found that people who like Nick Cave also like Timber Timbre, which I love. You should check them out if you're looking for new music.

    November

Did you even read my comment or just the first half of the first sentence?

    NathFilms

Timber can fuck off with you

    sam o

November Thanks for the recommendation I now love them

    J. David

You'd get less hostility if you said "If you like Nick Cave, you might like Timber Timbre" without your opinion about Nick Cave. You're entitled to it, sure, just as people are entitled to tell you to fuck off. (You can't seriously be surprised by that response.)

  17. David W Warren

    our bodies that fall.

  18. GREG SCHNEIDER

I love Nick Cave. I've been following him since the Bargeld days but this shit sucks. Is it the artist, the producer? Horrible. No emotion at all just boring crap.

    NathFilms

You need to hear it live, so much better, after seeing this new album you have no much more appreciation for this album, look up the concerts footage of the songs on YouTube if you can't get to see him

    Sgtwhitepepper

How do you not get an emotional reaction, this is deep

    Carbono

that is a very rude thing to say. This is a masterpiece, although you may not like it. It was partly written after Nick Cave's son death, and in my opinion there's more emotion in this than in any of his works. Still, show some respect for this piece. Thank you

    Yuko Taylor

It must be a matter of perception GREG SCHNEIDER.
I find this album to be almost pure emotion.

  19. Evan Henderson

Anyone have an idea what the time signature is on this?? It seems so complex...

    TheseBoots.net

I think it's fluid. Almost the way that plainsong is fluid.

  20. zzebowa

Anthrocene... I hope he isnt serious! :)

  21. Dan Bloom

Cassandra Silver wrote: ''It's wonderful--Thank you for pointing it out. With his permission, I hope I will be able to use it.
My solipsistic grief about living in the Anthropocene has found a word itself: solastalgia
'In 2003 the Australian philosopher Glenn Albrecht coined the term solastalgia to mean a “form of psychic or existential distress caused by environmental change”'. Robert Macfarlane

"The movements of most of the people who live in cities have lost their connexion with the earth; they hang, as it were, in the air, hover in all directions, and find no place where they can settle."
    Rainer Maria Rilke

(Also, back in 2011, a sad prophecy: "In articles for Yale Environment 360, New Yorker writer Elizabeth Kolbert reported on a study that found that the pace of global warming is outstripping projections, and on the possibility that scientists will designate a new geological epoch to reflect the changes that humans have caused.")

[This is not so much self-advertising---as that the whole purpose of it is--my having found so many illuminating things said brilliantly by the most perceptive people on this most important subject]

  22. Евгений •

best song on the album, pure art and passion

  23. Erline Andrews

The instruments sound like they're talking mournfully in their own language.

  24. Nijo

I hope in 400 years time, people will look at Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds the same way we look at Shakespeare today.

    jemimallah

good luck on us having those 400 years, buddy

    Jesse aan de Wiel

If we go by the lyrics of this song, we won't hit those 400 years mate

  25. Dan Bloom

While the concept “anthropocene” began as an academic model, its use has broadened to literature, art and even popular culture.

It’s use by Cave on “Skeleton Tree” somehow seems analogous to the song “Higgs Boson Blues” from his previous album, “Push the Sky Away, where an arcane, but newsworthy idea is treated as a metaphorical device to draw out the composer’s profound emotions.

In "Higgs Boson Blues,” particle physics is used to highlight culture’s strange ability to compress space and time into a dense, meaningless void.

    Anne Brit Raaen

Nah, he just explaining how to a-void it.

    Anne Brit Raaen

    The culture, that is.

  26. weehillywinky1

    Breathtakingly sad and beautiful.

  27. Sahajatara Blake

    13,112 -- WAS JUST 3000 LAST NIGHT!

  33. Dan Bloom

Notice he does not sing "in the name of the AnthroPOcene" in the song since four syllables would be too long for the line he needed, and Anthrocene, which was first coined by science writer Andrew C. Revkin in a book in 1992, makes much better sense with a shorter spelling and a 3 syllable sound than the longer 4 syllables, which is harder to pronouce. Nick Cave's song may just tip the scales back to using the term as Anthrocene, at least in pop culture and news headlines. And if academics still want go with with the longer Paul Crutzen 4-syllable term, that's fine, too. BOTH can co-exist; one in academia, one in pop culture. Long live Nick Cave! And Andy Revkin!

    BOSIE321

Thanks for the background info, as I wondered why he didn't use the third syllable. This and Magneto are my favourite tracks from the new album.

    Ridley Roid

What the FUCK are you talking about!?

    Janacko Osmanovic

I believe that he does not only sing about antropocene, but also about anthropocentrism and he found the best way to mix these

    Transmission Farm Productions

This album is pure magic. I was wondering about this. Thanks for the info.

  34. Sabiduría Salvaje

Some people named coldplay. I am here because I totally love Nick Cave since Wim Wenders wings of desire. A long term relationship :)
