How could someone give that a thumbs down. I've been a Joe Nichols fan for a long time. That's quality, not like that crap they call country today. Have you heard Carrie Underwood's latest? Be honest. I don't know what kind of music that is.

I can only hope and pray that my son can do the same thing, only its drugs, was a law enforcement officer for 18 years, got mixed up in pain pills that led to meth, lost family, three kids, grandkids, and job, plus retirement, second stent in prison, first was for 3 years, this time it was 7 years. I will be 80 years old when he gets out. Just hope I live that long. I'm 76 years old now, but I'm the only family he has left. God willing I will still be here.

On July 10th of this year I said goodbye to an old friend of mine. I quit liquor last December but beer and wine wouldn't quit me. At the bar right before I went on to do my show I had already had 6 beers, then after my performance I turned to my wife and said "I think I want to be done". And in just 3 short months once my mind was made up for good I've dropped about 22 pounds of a beer gut, got a good job, and my marriage has never been stronger. I apologize for rambling but this song performed by this amazing artist just got to me.

I went sober for 4 months, hoping a junkie would clean up her life - so we could be together. when I realized she'd never be part of my life - AND I was still single. I hit the bottle harder than I ever did before.

Christmas last year, 12/23/16 a preacher from the the church I used to go to stopped by to give me a Christmas card.

Never felt guiltier in my life, quit going to church.
Went sober for a month after. Started drinking right after - when I realized I was still single, and bitter over it.

I guess I should quit drinking and smoking. But when you're 23 and never had a girlfriend - despite wishing I had since I was 11. You CAN'T.

I don't care that I'm 23, and still a virgin. I'd walk away from all my bad habits for the right woman.
But I guess God's plan ain't up to me - so I don't mind killing myself slowly anyways.

Man don't do this to yourself. You remind me so much of myself before I found my wife. My ex-fiancé was(and still is) a hardcore junkie and I got with her to try an fix her so we could be together. You can't fix someone who isn't ready to change my friend. So after she stole from me and left me I was already a regular member of the drinking club, but I hit that liquor harder than ever before. How I made it home some nights i'll never know. Remember there is someone out there for everyone, believe me.

2013 been drinking every day since its not an easy thing its like a thing to do everyday like taking a shower. I have to give vodka up its killing my insides and hurting the ones I love, I stopped twice it was weeks n weeks and something bad happened and relapsed again its not worth it. Gotta change.

Dear whoever is listening,

Today i forgave my brother for pain he caused years ago. It's too to this day, over 20 years ago, to do so. I am sorry it took so long because I think I was one it hurt more during these years. My old friend was pain. My old friend was tears no one seen. I wasn't drinking alcohol but I tipped more than a few self pities through the years. Every morning for over 20 years, I woke up and said hello to the pain I hid but today, only today, I can officially say goodbye and it not control me anymore. So, Goodbye old friend. I don't need you anymore.

I love this song but so dam heartfelt and tough its a tearjerking song... recovering alcoholic last April after 10 yrs of boozing (started at 14)and the toughest thing to do is let go of the only thing that can get you thru a tough day. everyday is a temptation, urges temptation the need to drink seems to never go away.....

@bigchicken88 Good for you, but maybe you can get help with something other than smoking tobacco, i got rid of my coke addiction with weed after consulting my doctor. and i am on my way to quit tobacco as well. nicotine is really bad for you, at least you can quit weed anytime with 2 weeks withdrawal, but tobacco takes years, so you probably should consider taking the lesser evil.

I didn't say good-bye to my "old friend" until after the ones I'd loved and who loved me were done. I did time, lost custody (well-deserved), but I've said good-bye and when I hear this song, I celebrate and hope for those who are still hand-in-hand with the old friend, no matter the form it takes, that leads them so far away from what is freedom and joy.

@psgutters I wish my brother in law saw the angels dressed in police uniforms as help and not as harm. I hope I can tell this too my brother. And he can find it as touching as I did. Thank you for changing your ways. I now hope my brother can change his too.

Sometimes we have to hit rock bottom before we realize life is more than our addictions. Strength and love pulls us through tough times if we allow it to. Family, friends and those who believe in us give us hope that we can conquer anything.
