Bob Cummings The Rumor was her last 80s album actually. Good album too. The Rumor and Love and Let Live are awesome. Then came I Need Love which is even better.

Not the most conventional of sounds, but I think this song is the perfect product of the 80's with some drum machine sound and some wonderfully done electric guitars at the same time! "But honey, you gotta know I didn't plan it" .......love it!!

Soul Kiss was actually an attempt to be in line with the new MTV phenomenon at that time.. as well as the newest (awful) mid-80's synthesizer and keyboard sounds. Unfortunately, this wasn't Olivia's true style.. she wasn't being true to herself, and her fans knew it. No one bought into this revamped look.. this wasn't going to be another "Physical." In fact, the media practically ignored it. I remember (being a die hard Olivia fan).. going into a record store at the time and the Soul Kiss promo pictures of Olivia were on a small display. I asked my mom if she could buy me the album and she said no. My mom stated, "she's going too far now." I wonder how many other "moms" or just regular fans thought the same. It was just too sexy and too much of a directional change for Olivia and it wasn't tastefully done. She just couldn't pull this off.. it was a commercial failure ('Soul Kiss' was the only song that barely reached the top 20) and with the rest of the songs being blandly mediocre.. the album inevitably bombed.

This video looks more like 1981 where they threw some stuff in front of a camcorder. A sophisticated theatrical look was common by 1985. Duran Duran, Eurythmics.

Soul Kiss was Olivia's best and most experimental album.  I wished Olivia would have pushed more edgier albums afterwards.  She only went backwards.  Culture Shock has that 80's horror Halloween, Friday 13th sound to it.

It was her attempt to compete with the new generation of singers like Madonna. Trouble is Madonna was a whole generation younger and Sheena Easton beat her to it and was able to pull it off, while ONJ could not.

Interview with Eric Singer

KF: You mentioned 1985 so I have to stay in that time period for this question. A person who looks like you appears in Olivia Newton-John's "Culture Shock" video. Was that you, and if so, what can you tell us about that gig?

ES: Yeah, that's me. Actually that was filmed in 1984. It was recorded at the old Starwood Club in Hollywood. And that was done because I was playing with Lita Ford at the time.

I'll give you a couple of fun tidbits. Olivia Newton-John was pregnant at the time so that's why you never see a lot of good body shots and her clothes are kind of looser. She was like five or six months pregnant during the taping of that. And her nephew played bass in the video, I remember he was Australian and he told me he was her nephew. And I was just hired to be in the video and the way it happened was, David Mallet -- I think he did some stuff with KISS actually...

KF: Yes, he did "Tears Are Falling" and some stuff with Def Leppard.

ES: Yeah, he did a lot of big video stuff back then. He had done a couple of Lita Ford videos and when he went to do the video they wanted to use a more rock-looking band for Olivia Newton-John's video. So he called up one of the guys in Lita's band and said, "Hey, I want to use the band guys for this video." Well, I had done Lita's videos. Randy Castillo was the drummer before me in Lita Ford. The other two guys, Gordon Copley and Bobby Donati, were also in Lita's band. And I think David Mallet called Gordon, the bass player, and said he wanted to use us for Olivia's video. So Gordon called me up and that's how I got hired.

This song seems so out of line with Newton John's persona. Maybe with a sense of humour or irony it would have worked. But it is performed in earnest and we don't buy it. Very definitely a low point in ONJ's catalogue.

I remember when this came out.. there was talk that the Physical controversy helped it sales, and they really pushed it with her SoulKiss effort... it seem so forced, it failed..I didn't care for it..Why can the 3 of live together...? Really?

ah, the 80s, an era when the pop song and the metal "look" were married...and if they are going to put a "metal" looking band in the video, there has to be more guitar than just a tiny solo (and more crunch)...olivia looks great though...

Soul Kiss is on my mp3-player... and this song is one of my favorites... it's hard to face the many sides and facettes of Olivia. But since I love them all...she's so much more than great!

This is when ONJ started to buy into the 80's big hair, over-done excessive look. It's a shame because she blew the doors off any woman of her time without a drop of makeup. She seriously could wear a burlap sack and still win a beauty AND talent contest. Damn.

I don't remember it all, as it has been so long ago. In 1984 she lived with her future husband Matt Lattanzi and a close female friend. Which started a lot of rumors.
