Newsom, Joanna - Waltz Of The 101st Lightborne Lyrics

I believed they had got what they came for;
I believed our peril was done,
on the eve of the last of the Great Wars,
after three we had narrowly won.
(But the fourth,
it was carelessly done.)

I saw his ship in it's whistling ascension,
as they launched from the Capitol seat–
swear I saw our mistake
when the clouds draped like a flag,
across the backs of the fleet
of the Hundred-First Lightborne Elite.

As the day is long,
so the well runs dry,
and we came to see Time is taller
than Space is wide.
And we bade goodbye
to the Great Divide:
found unlimited simulacreage to colonize!

But there was a time we were lashed to the prow
of a ship you may board, but not steer,
before You and I ceased to mean Now,
and began to mean only Right Here
(to mean Inches and Miles, but not Years);
before Space has a taste of its limits,
and a new sort of coordinate awoke,
making Time just another poor tenant:
bearing weight, taking fire, trading smokes,
in the war between us and our ghosts.

(But I saw the Bering Strait and the Golden Gate,
in silent suspension of their golden age!
And you can barely tell, if I guard it well,
where I have been, and seen,
pristine, unfelled.)

I had a dream that i walked in the garden
of Chabot, and those telescope ruins.
It was there that I called to my true love,
who was pale as millennial moons,
Honey, where did you come by that wound?

When i woke, he was gone
and the War had begun,
in eternal return and repeat.
Calling, Where in the hell are the rest of your fellow
One Hundred-One Lightborne Elite?
stormed in the New Highland Light Infantry.

Make it stop, my love!
We were wrong to try.
Never saw what we could unravel,
in traveling light,
nor how the trip debrides–
like a stack of slides!
All we saw was that Time is taller than Space is wide

That's why we are bound to a round desert island,
'neath the sky where our sailors have gone.
Have they drowned, in those windy highlands?
Highlands away, my John.

Just saw her live. She didn’t play this song but shes still amazing.

  2. k.... ....

Life itself dancing on my grave.

You and I stopped meaning Now and only meant Right Here. Can someone tell me what that means?

    S.... A....

After time-travel is discovered, the distinction between the past, present, and future ("the Great Divide") becomes meaningless. Our conscious experience is anchored by our coordinates in time and space. If we could travel through time, the idea of "now" would no longer mean anything, and our experiences would only be defined by our physical location ("right here")

    S.... A....

@Simulacreage Woww. Thanks that makes sense

    S.... A....

I would also add a layer of metaphor. If she is also interweaving a love story and the loss of love then "Now" would be the idea of a current relationship, with a past, present and presumed future, and "right here" would be two people occupying a physical space but with no future relationship to imagine.

Sometimes you get too caught up in yourself. This is a song to listen to then

Joanna is such a poet. "Before space had a taste of its lemons". Gets me right in the feels every time.

    w.... ....

wheelinshirt " before space had a taste of its limits" although your line is pretty good too.

    w.... ....

they're not the official line but I love that nonetheless

  11. J.... L....

    gorgeous tune.

  12. A.... W....

The instrumental part reminds me of Gryphon from the 1970s... medieval funk baby

  13. L.... L....

    This music will live forever

  14. A.... S....

bearing weight, taking fire, trading smokes, in a war between us and our ghosts..

  15. D.... C....

this is pretty much the best thing i've heard in my life.

  16. D.... C....

might be the best song on a phenomenal album

  17. R.... K....

does anyone get a taste of 'ILLINOISE' by Sufjan Stevens when listening to this album??

    R.... K....

ROMAN KIRBY exactly what I was thinking

    R.... K....

I read this comment just as Joanna sang "To the great divide" and I got flash back to Casimir Pulaski Day, "On the floor at the great divide"

    R.... K....

I think more of Kate Bush

  18. a.... z....

boy has she enriched my life

    a.... z....

    mine too

  19. w.... ....

3 people didn't see time is taller than space is wide

  20. h.... ....

whats she doin with that bird on her arm

    h.... ....

There are no pockets in her dress... where else is she going to put it? FFS man, use your brain for a second.

    h.... ....

    just chillin

    h.... ....

    What ISN'T she doing?

    h.... ....

Fred Armisen told her to "put a bird on it"

  21. P.... ....

I love her voice. But I prefered the earlier work of just her voice and the harp. It was very unique. This sounds more like a lot of other things.

    P.... ....

I initially felt the same way about a couple of piano-driven songs on her previous record, but after more listens I felt as though Joanna has grown enough as a songwriter that she doesn't need to rely on a signature instrument to let her musical identity shine through, and started really appreciating those songs... some of them even became favourites of mine. It's still a matter of preference of course, but I certainly wouldn't describe this song as being conventional.

  22. e.... ....

I could honestly listen to this all day.

    e.... ....

exurb1a Yep! But hear some Kate Bush as well, if you haven't already. If there were ever a genre called "Magical," they would both definitely fall into it.... :)

    e.... ....

    exurb1a same

    e.... ....

Holy what are you doing here?

    e.... ....

Joanna's songs and your videos fill me with mingled feelings of wonder and melancholy. Lately, I have been contemplating a pivotal decision in my life and both medias really helped root my thoughts. So thank you, from the bottom of my heart.

  23. K.... E....

God how is this so good?

  24. c.... s....

As significant as mr zimmerman, no feen meat

  25. c.... s....

I believe they have got what they came for......

  26. G.... V....

This song is the saddest most touching apocalyptic a I do tune I've ever heard. I just read the lyrics for the first time and at first I was bummed to find that the word I thought had been the name Colin was in fact calling but then it was all made up for when I realized the last words of the song was my John and not some foreign word lol ......it's just the saddest most beautiful song.......never thought that Id find a song sadder than some of the o da on the milk eyed mender but here it is.....and for me.....and with this artist especially...... Sad is good 😉

    G.... V....

+Elan Holdorf Both this song and Anecdotes have that same effect on me. She's definitely my new favorite artist.

    G.... V....

+Elan Holdorf wait did you think it was 'Colin, where in the hell are the rest of your fellow 101 Lightbourne Elite'?

  27. G.... V....

this is one of the best songs ever

    G.... V....

For me it is the most memorable song from the last album.

    G.... V....

It reminds me of Doctor Who
