Newsom, Joanna - This Side Of The Blue Lyrics
Svetlana sucks lemons across from me
And I am progressing abominably
And I do not know my own way to the sea
But the saltiest sea knows its own way to me
And I find myself toeing the embarcadero
And I find myself knowing the things that I knew
Which is all that you can know on this side of the blue
And Jaime has eyes black and shiny as boots
And they march at you, two-by-two, re-loo re-loo
When she looks at you, you know she's nowhere near through
It's the kindest heart beating this side of the blue
And the signifieds butt heads with the signifiers
While across the sky sheet the impossible birds
In a steady, illiterate movement homewards
And Gabriel stands beneath forest and moon
See them rattle and boo, see them shake, see them loom
See him fashion a cap from a page of Camus
See him navigate deftly this side of the blue
And the rest of our lives will the moments accrue
When the shape of their goneness will flare up anew
And we do what we have to do, re-loo re-loo
Which is all you can do on this side of the blue
Oh it's all that you can do on this side of the blue

Newsom, Joanna This Side Of The Blue Comments
Just heard this on France Culture, thought it was Emiliana Torrini, or Laura Veirs, and no, it was her, totally unknown to me. And, just, waw.
Please research the flat Earth!
I wish I could play this on the piano

Came from McJuggerNuggets The G.A.M.E
Headshot! Shoulder Shot! Headshot! Arm Shot!
The G.A.M.E
This is like a mix of a June Carter ballad and Bjork, i love it!
She is just so great.
Ryan I am enlightened. life would've ended without this artist and I would feel the loss. thank u man thank u love n miss ya
never heard of her before today, but she got everything in her sound that's lacking in music today, AUTHENTICITY
+beatleneil indeed authenticity, truth and innocence
She makes nursery rhymes for the learned hip. She wrings my soul out like the dirty washcloth that it is, and leaves me clean and New. She is what's great about talent that cannot be hindered, art via necessity.
it's the kindest heart beating this side of the blue ...

Marc Fuller “Melisma,” maybe
@Marc Fuller melisma
This has always been my fav melody, beautiful song
Best hipster lullaby ever. Love it.
Her solution to purposeless existence.
A great artists asks more questions then they answer. The lyric should be open to the interpretation of the listener, so as to generate discussions. The lyric doesn't have to mean anything to the writer and in many cases doesn't. The mood is more important than the meaning. They take you to a place you haven't visited before. A small vacation in your head.
Brilliant explanation
I believe this is my favorite Youtube comment ever. Thank you.
bbbeans seriously right?
This is like a long cruise not a small vacation :-)
Very nicely said
I remember many years ago when this song was used on an Orange Advert. First time I saw it was on the big screen before a movie. One minute and four or so seconds of this song. I hardly clocked what it was supposed to be advertising but nothing has been the same since the first time I heard Joanna Newsom.
Same, there was a period in the 2000's when Orange would have really interesting obscure music like this and I would Google who the artists were, and this is how I came across Joanna Newsom
My introduction to Joanna Newsom was exactly the same, I was totally blown away by this song, and subsequently The Milk Eyed Mender has become one of my favourite albums. I was lucky enough to see her at the Royal Albert Hall in London a few years back, a magical evening.
YES! THIS IS HOW I FOUND HER
Same, I remember the advert well. It was about a black out in NYC
Me and my mate always shouted "Sucks Lemons!" when it came on haha!
I can't help but cry listening to this, I don't know whether it makes me happy or sad though..
This song changed everything...
This song as inspired me for nearly 10 years x
Now my son who is also called Gabriel says this song is about him! Who to believe? Lol!
Actually I would say that the time signature, the tempo and the simple harmony give it more of a sea shanty feel which is entirely appropriate for the subject matter.
she should make a collaboration with Daniel Johnston
At first I didn't like her voice, but it grew on me in.. oh.. about 4 seconds.
I like the country feeling of the music that complets perfectly the lyrics
she knows something
beautiful
how is that?
I have an eight year old Son called Gabriel who has Aspergers. He LOVES to hear his name in this song, and her description of the Gabriel in this song could not be more like my Gabriel! I delight in this song for that reason!
I like that. Beautiful.
she is literally the bomb
If I could only listen to one song for the rest of my life, it might be this one.
sub·merse (sb-mûrs)
tr.v. sub·mersed, sub·mers·ing, sub·mers·es
To submerge.
P.S.It was a reference to the song. I.E. to submerge in water "The Other Side Of The Blue"
The spirit of information is okay, but let's not shit on a good song.
this song just reminds me of drifting in the ocean, floating among the sea creatures and billowing about like a jellyfish
and just giving your life up to become a part of the sea, to never return
it's a very calming and melancholy song
fuck all of you and your mindless interpretations. this song is written about me.
:') se trata de la voz de una sirena que cepilla su cabello sobre una roca...
My favourite song. I love it. It's brilliance.
i was just jokin around and was in a good mood. i pressed play and started crying how weird is that
@sonrev Leave her alone. She's mine. My ownl My prescious;
This song works with everything. I put it on at work and it makes me feel like work is such a happy place to be, and when you're walking around it makes my city feel like New York duriing a blackout :)
i first heared this song on the orange commercial when new york has a blackout and everyone comes out of the houses and have a party on the streets! ive played it for a few of my friends and they think im mental! but its awesome i could easily listen on repeat over and over its the kind of song that makes me smile and feel good about myself. defo in my top 10 thanks for posting it
*cries*
Hopelessly in love. Might be what feels like to believe in God.
@tomgilly08 I guess what I'm getting at is that In an ugly world, it's nice to attach and submerse yourself in something softer....that is more akin to our nature. Beautiful things in a not so beautiful place we are. I find that this music is much more warming to my spirit than let's say for example....Converge, or Disturbed, or Lamb Of God. Not that those bands don't have their time and place. But the music we create is a response to both how we feel inside and how this world makes us feel.
is human nature really so perverse. pshh
