Newsom, Joanna - Only Skin Lyrics

And there was a booming above you
That night, black airplanes flew over the sea
And they were lowing and shifting like beached whales
Shelled snails, as you strained and you squinted to see
The retreat of their hairless and blind cavalry

You froze in your sand shoal, prayed for your poor soul
Sky was a bread roll, soaking in a milk-bowl
And when the bread broke, fell in bricks of wet smoke
My sleeping heart woke, and my waking heart spoke

Then there was a silence you took to mean something
"Run, sing, for alive you will evermore be"
And the plague of the greasy black engines a-skulking has gone east
While you're left to explain them to me
Released from their hairless and blind cavalry

With your hands in your pockets, stubbly running
To where I'm unfresh, undressed and yawning
Well, what is this craziness? This crazy talking?
You caught some small death when you were sleepwalking

It was a dark dream, darlin', it's over
The firebreather is beneath the clover
Beneath his breathing there is cold clay, forever
A toothless hound-dog choking on a feather

But I took my fishing pole, fearing your fever
Down to the swimming hole, where there grows a bitter herb
That blooms but one day a year, by the riverside, I'd bring it here
Apply it gently to the love you've lent me

While the river was twisting and braiding, the bait bobbed and the string sobbed
As it cut through the hustling breeze
And I watched how the water was kneading so neatly, gone treacly
Nearly slowed to a stop in this heat in a frenzy coiling flush along the muscles beneath

Press on me, we are restless things
Webs of seaweed are swaddling
And you call upon the dusk of the musk of a squid
Shot full of ink, until you sink into your crib

Rowing along, among the reeds, among the rushes
I heard your song, before my heart had time to hush it
Smell of a stone fruit being cut and being opened
Smell of a low and of a lazy cinder smoking

And when the fire moves away
Fire moves away, son
Why would you say
I was the last one?

Scrape your knee, it is only skin
Makes the sound of violins
And when I cut your hair and leave the birds all of the trimmings
I am the happiest woman among all women

And the shallow water stretches as far as I can see
Knee deep, trudging along, the seagull weeps, "So long," humming a threshing song
Until the night is over, hold on, hold on
Hold your horses back from the fickle dawn
I have got some business out at the edge of town
Candy weighing both of my pockets down
Till I can hardly stay afloat, from the weight of them
And knowing how the common folk condemn
What it is I do, to you, to keep you warm
Being a woman, being a woman

But always up the mountainside you're clambering
Groping blindly, hungry for anything
Picking through your pocket linings, well, what is this?
Scrap of sassafras, eh Sisyphus?

I see the blossoms broke and wet after the rain
Little sister, he will be back again
I have washed a thousand spiders down the drain
Spiders' ghosts hang, soaked and
Dangling silently, from all the blooming cherry trees
In tiny nooses, safe from everyone
Nothing but a nuisance, gone now, dead and done
Be a woman, be a woman

Though we felt the spray of the waves
We decided to stay, till the tide rose too far
We weren't afraid, cause we know what you are
And you know that we know what you are

Awful atoll, oh, incalculable indiscreetness and sorrow
Bawl bellow, sibyl seacow, all done up in a bow
Toddle and roll, teethe an impalpable bit of leather
While yarrow, heather and hollyhock awkwardly molt along the shore

Are you mine?
My heart?
Mine anymore?

Stay with me for awhile, that's an awfully real gun
I know life will lay you down as the lightning has lately done
Failing this, failing this, follow me, my sweetest friend
To see what you anointed in pointing your gun there
Lay it down, nice and slow, there is nowhere to go

Save up, up where the light, undiluted, is weaving
In a drunk dream at the sight of my baby, out back
Back on the patio, watching the bats bring night in
While, elsewhere, estuaries of wax-white
Wend, endlessly, towards seashores unmapped

Last week, our picture window produced a half-word
Heavy and hollow, hit by a brown bird
We stood and watched her gape like a rattlesnake
And pant and labor over every intake

I said a sort of prayer for some rare grace
Then thought I ought to take her to a higher place
Said, "Dog nor vulture nor cat shall toy with you
And though you die, bird, you will have a fine view"

Then in my hot hand, she slumped her sick weight
We tramped through the poison oak, heartbroke and inchoate
The dogs were snapping, and you cuffed their collars
While I climbed the tree-house, then how I hollered

Well she'd lain, as still as a stone, in my palm, for a lifetime or two
Then saw the treetops, cocked her head, and up and flew
While back in the world that moves, often, according to the hoarding of these clues
Dogs still run roughly around little tufts of finch-down

And the cities we passed were a flickering wasteland but his hand
In my hand, made them hale and harmless
While down in the lowlands, the crops are all coming, we have everything
Life is thundering blissful towards death in a stampede of his fumbling green gentleness

You stopped by, I was all alive
In my doorway, we shucked and jived
And when you wept, I was gone
See, I got gone when I got wise
But I can't with certainty say we survived

Then down and down and down and down and down and deeper
Stoke, without sound, the blameless flames, you endless sleeper
Through fire below and fire above, and fire within
Sleep through the things that couldn't have been if you had not have been

And when the fire moves away
Fire moves away, son
And why would you say
I was the last one?

All my bones, they are gone, gone, gone
Take my bones, I don't need none
Cold, cold cupboard, lord, nothing to chew on
Suck all day on a cherry stone
Dig a little hole not three inches round
Spit your pit in a hole in the ground
Weep upon the spot for the starving of me
Till up grows a fine young cherry tree
When the bough breaks, what'll you make for me?
A little willow cabin to rest on your knee
Well, what will I do with a trinket such as this?
Think of your woman, who's gone to the west
But I'm starving and freezing in my measly old bed
Then I'll crawl across the salt flats, to stroke your sweet head
Come across the desert with no shoes on
I love you truly or I love no-one

Fire moves away
Fire moves away, son
Why would you say that I was the last one?
Last one

Clear the room, there's a fire, a fire, a fire
Get going and I'm going to be right behind you
And if the love of a woman or two, dear, could move you to such heights
Then all I can do is do, my darling, right by you

No one is doing, or ever has done anything like what Joanna does with Ys. I first head this record thirteen years ago and it could have come out yesterday; it could equally have come out forty years ago. Usually when a record this perfect comes out, the copycats quickly mirror it into irrelevance and the original wonderment is lost in the echo; but no one can do that with this album, they wouldn't know how. And I think that is the highest praise you can give Joanna for this recording; it's literally so unique that it will always stand completely alone, undiluted by copycats. It's singular, but more than this, it is perfect.

    Scrap a sassafrass eh Sisyphus!

  11. s.... c....

I remember hearing this for the first time...I was floored!...it was such a joyous melody that changed textures from one story to the next...so beautifully crafted!...I never forgot it...I had to pull over from driving to fully appreciate this wonderous masterpiece of song!...I've bought 3 of her albums so far...I love them so much...thank you joanna!!!

  12. S.... w....

No words! Utterly sublime in emotion.

  13. C.... Z....

    I’m a scrap of sassafrass....

  14. t.... t....

Just my opinion but I hear the death and resurrection of coming to spirituality. Of the love affair between humanity and nature and how it builds and destroys. Also the relation between relationships. When we attempt salvation we sometimes martyr ourselves. Also the pain that lies in freedom. In how we sacrifice self to gain perspective of truth and allign with the complete wholeness that is All. Mother and child, lovers, GOD and humankind... Just a song of infinity. That's what I get anyway. But this is my first time listening so a more indepth study, better yet a deeper revealation of how I feel about it may need to be done. That being said I enjoyed it immensely.

  15. M.... N....

This song always leaves me blissfully confused

  16. M.... N....

Beautiful. A song my brother and I sang when we were younger, so it's really nostalgic for me. It's a nostalgic story-telling song in the first place, so it only adds to the effect. This song can bring me to tears, with it's incredibly vibrant imagery. I love it, definitely a favorite.

  17. S.... B....

Sometimes, such as now, I listen to this song and just end up with my jaw open in awe that someone could create something this astoundingly beautiful.

  18. I.... J....

I love Joanna Newsom because I know that it will literally take most of (if not all) of my life to truly listen to, understand, and visualize all of her music.

  20. c.... ....

This song to me is perfect. It’s beautiful.
My favourite song in the whole world

  21. M.... P....

no words can describe what this song has meant to me over the last 12 years... but some of the lyrics in the video are incorrect just fyi

  22. c.... ....

Probably the greatest song ever recorded.

  23. C.... ....

    9:20 really gets me going

  24. S.... B....

    oh so good!

  25. k.... m....

If you listen to this song as a mother singing to her child, it makes way more sense.

  26. E.... C....

the line “scrape your knee: it is only skin makes the sound of violins” at 5:00 evokes such a powerful emotional response from me, i don’t know why. joanna newsom is so mind-blowingly talented, i don’t think talented even covers how magical she is. my heart legitimately feels changed after absorbing this song.

    E.... C....

Elsie Campbell makes me cry every time

    E.... C....

It gets me everytime, too. For me, it means, that it's okay to get hurt, to throw oneself in a possibly hurtful situation. You are strong enough to heal afterwards. But without allowing yourself this part of life, you will never be able to enjoy the happier times.

  27. P.... O....

Everytime I leave this song alone for a while I think, "maybe it wasn't that great."

It's always so much better than I remember.

  28. v.... g....

Ok so Bill Callahan was constantly horny (but always up the mountainside you're clambering), people judged her for fucking him (the common folk condemn what it is I do to keep you warm), Callahan may have had something like depression/anxiety/night terrors(the whole bombing dream sequence), she had his abortion/miscarriage but some part of her wanted to save or keep it (the brown bird part), the relationship was on the rocks (tho we felt the spray of the waves we decided to stay), this may help some peeps understand bits of the song

  29. J.... L....

The all my bones and onwards, tears me down, instant tears....Well actually the whole song makes me cry

  30. E.... S....

lyk if u cry evry tim

  31. S.... B....

Totally not gay man tears being shed.

  32. B.... H....

it's been a long time since my mind has been this fucking blown

  33. J.... C....

The more you listen to the song to more complex it becomes. I just now realized she referenced stone fruit multiple times in this song and it actually has a place in the story
"Smell of a stone fruit being cut and being opened"
"Silently from all the blooming cherry trees in tiny nooses safe from everyone"
"Suck all day on a cherry stone"
"Dig a little hole not three inches round, spit your pit in the hole in the ground"

  34. S.... B....

The meaning behind this song is quite depressing, but Joanna disguises it with beautiful melodies and heart wrenching vocals, truly one of my favorite Newsom songs. It's so brutally honest, and the beginning of the song is written so brilliantly starting off as if we've been thrown into the middle of a tale. I've always loved Newsom's narrating, and here she shines more then ever in 16 minutes and 53 seconds of pure gold. My favorite line is when she sings about the estuaries and how it conjoined with the shore out onto the ocean, where thankfully all her lover's actions are forgiven though she tries and tries to support him, and yet he follows through his infidelity and mischief... and still she stays by his side. Being a woman, being a woman... oh Newsom, you've had it hard. I'm only 16, and gosh I'm so In love with her music. Thank you, Joanna... you're a beautiful story teller.

    S.... B....

Also this deserved a Grammy for Best Rap Song.

  35. S.... A....

    fucking genius beyond compare.

  36. J.... W....

that little anecdote in the middle about the brown bird gets me every time. I forget that part is in this song and then I'm floored by how captivating it is.

  37. m.... g....

i always think my dog is biting her squeaky toy when this song starts

  38. T.... C....

According to her site, part of the last verse is "could move you to such heights" instead of "couldn't move you to such heights", just fyi

  39. A.... M....

    Goosebumps....

  40. M.... M....

    "sky was a bread roll,
    soaking in a milk bowl
    and when the bread broke,
fell in bricks of wet smoke"

How much better can imagery ever be than this?

  41. Y.... C....

This is the whitest thing I've ever listened to in my life and I listen to Father John Misty.

    Y.... C....

lol white people! am i rite!!!!! 2016!!!!!!!!

    Y.... C....

fjm wouldn't be fit to kiss the ground Joanna walks on.

  42. L.... G....

I listened to this song so much when my Dad was dying. It was the only thing that felt right. I remember listening to it in winter, watching the snow fall against the black night. Such a beautiful song. It was the only album I could listen to at that time.

    L.... G....

This feeling of relating to only one song for so long is hypnotizing. I understand you completely. <3

    L.... G....

    Sorry for your loss

  43. V.... C....

    very Kate Bush

  44. J.... Y....

little bits of the themes of eternal recurrence that are later more pronounced in Divers. still a beautiful and perfect song

  45. l.... ....

God how good this song is...

  46. M.... I....

5:33 - 6:00 is one of the most beautiful moments in all of Ys if you ask me

    M.... I....

Marcos Ioannou totally agree.Such an amazing moment

  47. J.... W....

    The. Lyrical. Master.

    👑

  48. B.... C....

Did you play this on a casette player and record it with a potato and then upload it to youtube?

  49. T.... ....

This is one of the most beautiful songs of our time. The powerlessness of all of us in the grasp of death and the power of nature. We do what we can, while avoiding what we can't. So instead we must stupor at the beauty and grasp to our loved ones when the fire comes.

    T.... ....

    I have no loved ones

  50. T.... K....

joanna sounds so good when she sings "then there was a silence you took to mean something"

  51. D.... C....

Come across the desert with no shoes on, I love you truly or I love no one.

  52. J.... C....

An epic poem of love and war.

  53. D.... L....

this might be the greatest piece of music ever written. as far as I'm concerned. just so breathtaking

  54. K.... K....

I wish I knew what it was about this song with which I resonate so well.

  55. s.... ....

    Amazing, totally and utterly amazing!

  56. K.... K....

I'm not sure what the story is here, but I can't sing it without nearly crying. I think I'm connecting to something deep within myself, and within the words, but I'm not sure what.

    K.... K....

This song manifests a lot of archetypes

  57. S.... M....

Man it's really hard to listen to this song on YouTube. The compression just kills it. Sounds all garbled and distorted.

    S.... M....

+Shawn McDermott jeez its not that bad u hipster :P

    S.... M....

+Alucard Hellsing I'm just a snob when it comes to this kind of stuff :)

    S.... M....

@Shawn McDermott nah actually tbh i realised halfway through listening ur totally right sz

    S.... M....

yeah it sounds awful here. but such a gorgeous song.

  58. L.... K....

To me, it almost sounds like her man went mad, and though she tries harder and harder to take care of him, she can't.

    L.... K....

+Lilly Kopp I hear hints of life and death, sickness and health, abandonment, betrayal, love, loss, and yes, madness too.

    L.... K....

"i love you truly or I love no one" you are right but he/she doesnt care. it's about loving someone unconditionaly. no matter where or to whom her/his lover will go, he/she knows that he/she will always love him.

    L.... K....

i thought it was about a cheating man who she still loves. she decides to forgive him. in the beginning he gives her an std

    L.... K....

To me it sounds like he's gone mad from PTSD after returning from a war, "There was a booming above you, Black airplanes flew over the sea, You froze in your sand shoal,
    Prayed for your poor soul"

  59. T.... ....

tfw when you realize all her songs are about andy fucking samberg

    T.... ....

    man, what the fuck.

    T.... ....

    It is I! Ras Trent!

    T.... ....

those songs are all in Divers. first three LPs are blessedly samberg-less. Divers is shit

    T.... ....

    TomatoOtters this song was pre-samberg

    T.... ....

you are so wrong and I hope you love yourself one day.

  60. T.... ....

this song is obviously about some no good man...or men that she can't get over. 6:00 going to meet this loser....and he picks though his pockets giving her sassafras is used to treat STDS

    T.... ....

+talkindurinthemovie Hmm. Ialways thought he was picking through his pocket linings and found it there, someone else having given it to him, maybe even her.

    T.... ....

    ever read Virginia Woolf?

  61. S.... ....

Please! Tell me what those Spiders are?

"I have washed a thousand spiders down the drain
Spiders ghosts hang soaked and dangelin'
Silently from all the blooming cherry trees
In tiny nooses, safe from everyone"

Is there any full (and right) interpretation of this lirycs? The only one I found is about sexual experience (what a misinterpretation).

    S.... ....

+Sheaker I believe this verse alludes to The Itsy Bitsy Spider which would mean that perseverance is the theme of the verse. The verse "Little sister, he will be back again." agrees with this interpretation and a second allusion to Old Mother Hubbard also supports the idea. As for the image I think that menstruation might be the references. Especially since there"nothing but a nuisance gone now dead and done". And she states "Be a woman . Be a woman". The sorrow might come from failed attempts to conceive also supported by "Be a woman"

    S.... ....

    +Jose Hernandez Thanks for that!!!

    S.... ....

Sheaker may not be a misinterpretation, the phrase “caught some small death” is a translation of a French phrase that means orgasming. I believe the spiders refer to some kind of guilty or internal demons though.

    S.... ....

i read an interesting interpretation on Genius that said the spiders represent unnecessary judgements and expectations hanging over joanna & her sisters lives. the blossoms/blossoming trees represent women thriving free from those “spiders”

    S.... ....

    it's about spiders

  62. A.... G....

It makes you wonder how she gets through live sets. Like it's one thing to write and create this song, and quite another to memorize and perform this along with other complex songs on the set list. Like 17 minutes of obscure lyrics... no conventional chorus, very few repetition... Truly impressive. This song is a modern masterpiece.

    A.... G....

@Rik B His wording is certainly odd but I can get behind the sentiment. Most music bands (with some notable exceptions) can't really stand up to the greatest musicians of the last century.

Sure, you still need tremendous amount of talent to be Bob Dylan, but his compositions aren't nearly as elaborate as Wagner or (for something more modern) Pink Floyd or Genesis. Doesn't take away from their art, but it's a different skillset.

    A.... G....

@Guida D Even while disagreeing with him, you give him too much credit. He's wrong and displayed his ignorance in an unjustifiable manner, denying the talents and efforts of countless musicians. I see why you're trying to establish understanding with his statement, but that's bound to be fruitless since what he claimed is untenable from any justifiable point of view.

    A.... G....

@Rik B I'm not defending him per se. It's just that I find *some* truth in his statement. Of course, his claim (conventional bands are not *real* musicians) is preposterous.

    A.... G....

    She is a genius!

    A.... G....

Search Joanna Newsom forgetting lyrics, kinda funny.

  63. H.... B....

These lyrics are some of the most puerile shite I have ever heard. I do however thrill to the sound of the dogs howling in my village at night.............................

    H.... B....

I believe it is called a conversation, or debate. I have deep and intimate knowledge of seagulls. Nasty birds with not an iota of compassion in them. Weeping just isn't going to happen. I didn't understand what a "raven quot." was or is....However I can well imagine a raven saying "nevermore" Intense birds with a deep understanding of royalty and ancient monuments.

    H.... B....

cute, I would call it a spat rather than a debate but all the same. Weeping may refer to the sound guls make it is kind of high pitched. I think raven are a bit quirky myself but I wouldn't question others opinion of them.

    H.... B....

Always question other peoples opinions....always. Threshing song...??  Spat..I like that. Skirmish, appealed to me. Was all meant rather tongue in cheek....Best Friends Forever...????

    H.... B....

that one simple she sings all night to ease the mood in a way similar to how one would sing to ease the burden of a job. I cannot question what is always implicitly subjective rather I allow there opinion to influence me in what way it will and move on.

    H.... B....

Harley Bretta if you think these are “random collections of words”, you are the uneducated one.

  64. d.... ....

Glorious, epic song about romantic love and all the pitfalls and levitations it carries within it by its nature.

  65. e.... ....

thank you so much for uploading this

  66. P.... K....

Why the hell is this not on spotify? This is probably, in my opinion, one of the most complete pieces of music ever created. It would do this world such a favor to make this as available as possible. Words cannot express how much I love this song,

    P.... K....

@GINSHINKZL s it's available a lot of places online in CD and Vinyl form.

    P.... K....

@Granbar yea... Gonna order it from amazon. Apparently JNew thinks Spotify is the "banana of the music induatry" lol

    P.... K....

+Paxel Karlsson "Complete" is the perfect word for it!

    P.... K....

Paxel Karlsson Spotify screws the artist out of money. Watch her interview with Larry King about why she chose not to collaborate with Spotify.

    P.... K....

Joanna has explained this. If you care about the artist, please buy physically or get a decent streaming service like Tidal.

  67. D.... S....

When she starts singing, at the beginning of the song looks like someone is squeezing a rubber dog toy. I love this song but the way.

  68. m.... ....

    Favorite 17 minute jam.

  69. W.... ....

i don't know it just founds like her singing is clashing with the music, and she's jsut making it up as she goes. O_O

    W.... ....

@Carson Thaler yeah the lyrics are definitely intriguing, but the music arrangement and the singing... goodness it doesn't flow tastefully to me.

    W.... ....

yes, it is a bit "brown", but does have it's sweet spots...

    W.... ....

    @Carson Thaler

The sweet spots are the bits of corn.

    W.... ....

that made me laugh pretty good... but then, it's all subjective...

    W.... ....

+Wally This is exactly what I thought when I first heard it. Now it's one of my favourite songs.

  70. W.... ....

i don't think i'm a fan of the tune. but i'd be able to appreciate the lyrics as a poem. :/

    W.... ....

well i think intelligence and philosophy should have more to it than just the triviality of common sense. it's great you take no offence. have fun going down your rabbit hole.

    W.... ....

Common sense keeps things applicable to reality. It is a proxy of intelligence. Philosophy is a math unto it's own and is the calculus version of common sense. The rabbit hole i inferred to belongs to everyone and does not belong elusively to me. But then, you'll see soon enough and end up going down it anyways...

    W.... ....

@Carson Thaler lol yeah ok i stand by what i said before. good day buddy.

    W.... ....

    cheers mate ;)

    W.... ....

Wally I love the song, but I can definitely understand appreciating the lyrics more; I definitely do. I think the song is a masterpiece though. This entire album is to me.

  71. b.... ....

One of the best lyrical pieces of our times!

  72. K.... ....

it means...what you need it to mean

  73. M.... ....

    best song in the world

  74. S.... P....

    My favorite form the album

  75. T.... B....

To me, this song is about the delight and fear and anguish and anxiety of love in sickness, loving the sick, and loving while sick ourselves.  How this world is so enormous and heavy and beautiful and intoxicating and smothering that it wrecks and ruins us.  How the infinite tiny miracles are barely enough - they are enough, but just barely - to keep us breathing.   And so much more.  This song is one of the greatest works of art to ever be created, and for the last eight years I've been extremely grateful to have it.

    T.... B....

she said this song was a recap of everything that happened in Ys told in a story. That's why it's such a ginormous song.

    T.... B....

the title was the last thing to be done, it came to her in a dream after the wrote the album.

  76. k.... j....

I love her Music so much...

  77. E.... P....

She married a dude that made a song called " I'm on a boat". So you can understand how I felt when I found out.

    E.... P....

Emily Padilla most women love a man who can make them laugh and based on her emotions put into her lyrics I'd imagine she isn't shallow enough to judge someone based on one facet of their life

    E.... P....

wish i didn't know that lol

    E.... P....

There's some humor in some (one, hehe (well maybe more)) songs.

Apparently he was a fan of her music before they met so he's probably a lot more intelligent than his characters are portrayed

As a musician. I understand cryptic lyrics. But this makes no sense. Like none of it

    P.... ....

@Jeeves574 I don't think the portion about the bird has anything to do with the desire to leave, and everything to do with the need to take care of something. Baby birds rely entirely on their mothers, so it would make sense for the bird to fly away only after being nurtured. I think it speaks to how deeply he's in trouble, and the way she tries to be delicate in her handling of both him and her own feelings. I also thought it had a few portions about reconciliation, but I think that word is a little too hopeful for the end of the song. When you listen to the conversation at the end(the portion with the male backup singer is being used to show his lines in the fight, starting with "All my bones..." and alternating), it's clear his instability is asking her to do the impossible physically and emotionally. The bough breaking isn't about pregnancy, but destruction. It's about destroying everything around them, and her attempt to salvage the pieces.

    P.... ....

there's nothing about being a musician that would make you understand "cryptic lyrics"

    P.... ....

As an idiot, I understand stupidity. But you are beyond idiocy. Like by a mile.

    P.... ....

Not everything is suppose to make sense. Some lyric writers are able to convey a feeling through the use of words, even when the listener doesn't understand what they say.

    P.... ....

As a 'musician', you should understand that language can be a mere tool to evoke emotional responses. Logic has nothing to do with it. This piece is a beautiful work of fine art.

Love the part with the  East-Asian style musical influences! 6:07 - 7:35 particularly reminds me of the stories of the Ming ji prostitutes from the novel Peach Blossom Pavilion.

That is my absolute favorite part😍

As stated in an interview this song connects all of ys songs together.
Too much to explain here. Check out songmeanings site if you'd like to make some sense of things. Its not perfect but will lead you in the right direction. Which id suggest doing as the songs open up to something much more sad and beautiful.
The bird part is about abortion/sawdust and diamonds.

It's just beautiful, just for the sake of beauty, the use of language, poetry + music together that say, I was here, love Joanna Newsom.  I agree with Billy, comment below, the lyrics mean whatever you say they mean.  I think there is one word that describes this feeling, but I am not eloquent enough to call out that word.  I just want my nieces (my daughter is the one who showed this song to me, so she already knows, and she publishes her own poetry on a regular basis) to hear this, and study on it.  There was this world.  A girl was born.  She learned how to read and write.  She learned music, how to play, read music, and sing.  SHE MADE THIS.  The line I quote most often--(I mean I did it again, this year, just to make a point in a conversation) out of dozens I feel are worth quoting is this, life is stumbling blissful toward death in a stampede.  That's what this song means to me.  It goddamn stuns me into raw humility.  All of us will die.  Soon.  And you can live as long as you can, be as happy as you can, love another person as hard as you can.  The End.  Maybe you can leave this song behind when you die, but...I don't think too many people can do this.  I will continue to enjoy listening and reading and observing the works of Art that we all contribute, and have a nice day, fellow human beings!  Hey, remember, it's you and me, until the end!  :-)  (I don't mean that in any religious way, calm down; I'm an Epicurean.)

I like that they're all real instruments being played.

Love Her! Don't believe the lyrics mean anything other that what you assign to them.

    B.... B....

that's the beauty of art!! :)

then you have not really read them.

    @Meredith Easterling
read the bible or some 'clear' shit, guess, it's more fitting for you. you can interprete artistic lyrics like you want.

    B.... B....

    lol what?

  86. S.... M....

this is my second favorite song of hers... i love this but it is kinda long, btw my first favorite song of hers is '81

  87. Q.... ....

This song just broke me. The whole tale of saving a sick bird and having the determination and knowledge to give it a proper death is beautiful! WHAT BROKE ME- having the miracle of "saw the trees tops, cocked her head and up and flew" followed by reality- "but back in the world...dogs still run roughly around little tufts of finch down"
having that opposition of romantic and beautiful "what should be" truth", followed by "no that bird died and the dogs are eating it"...seriously. metaphor much?

  88. T.... ....

I love that line as well.

  89. J.... S....

I have written my whole thesis listening to you, Joanna. Thank you so, so much. Your neautiful voice is the best way to concentration I have ever found.
