how come it seems like every female artist i adore is compared to kate bush? i'm genuinely asking, because i've never listened to kate bush past "running up that hill." it was a catchy, song, and her voice is recognizable, but seriously what's the big deal? i'm asking because it's starting to seem suspicious, like female musicians today can't be unique or original, they MUST be derivative or kate bush. i've seen this the most with st. vincent and joanna. did kate bush even play any instruments? if anything, i hear more joni mitchell in joanna than anything else.

Maybe you should try to listen to "Hello Earth", "Breathing", "This Woman's Work" or "Army Dreamers". Kate Bush created very creative pop music in her time... very progressive at some points. But you don't have to like if you don't, and she was not an accomplished musician as Joanna Newsom... she was more a singer, on stage performer and a gifted music crafter... she would play some piano and ukulele (!)... but maybe not at the level of Joanna Newsom. Personnaly, I prefer Kate Bush. But I do listen to lot of Joanna Newsom these days.

I used to feel just like you, I was pretty annoyed at all the comparisons to be honest. But this spring I started listening to Kate Bush and now I just see it. It's true that a lot of artists (female artists in particular) get compared to Kate, but it's not for nothing. Kate was a HUGE creative force and a literal icon in every sense of the word, she paved the way for female artists and the art pop scene in general. And what really hit me is that all these artists that are often compared to Kate have all said that they see her as a big inspiration, which means they've actually been influenced by her intentionally. So there's that, but not all artists that are compared to Kate are really that similar.. Joanna on the other hand kind of is? Like, as I said I really didn't understand the comparison at first, but the moment I listened to wuthering heights.. like the INSTANT Kate started singing I just thought "Okay, I get it". It's the really uncompromising unique vocal style and the complex lyrics they've got in common. They really are quire similar yet quite different.

This does sound like Kate Bush. Listen to Infant Kiss.

@Lisa O yeah, I know the legend. That's why I said it was bad, thought it was just too ordinary or urban to be used in her lyrics. Although Wikipedia makes it sound quite fancy. There's even a movie based on it starring Kate Mara.

I agree that common or, ugh, ordinary things cannot be in the repertoire of such an obscure and enlightened individual like Jojo Newsom. Only the truly unique and obscure things in life are intellectually stimulating, and deep enough to be understood and appreciated by the artistic people of the world like you and I.

This makes me want to go outside, and hug a tree.

+tomdissonance I get what you're saying, but as a massive Kate Bush fan myself, it's insane how much she sounds like her here. Not just the voice, but the lyrics and the music in general. I'm not saying she copied Kate Bush or anything, it actually makes me happy.

Kate's influence clearly heard in this lovely tune but it's not gratuitous Joanna taking the syntax and running with it.

Her music makes my eyes well and I don't know why. It moves my beyond anything I've heard before.

This woman is something else. I was listening to this pretty passively, enjoying the music, and then I caught a few lyrics, which caught me off guard, and looked them up for the whole song. And they just blew me away. This woman never fails to blow me away.

This is a good album, but for me, it doesn't run as deep as Ys. She wrote that when she was with Bill Callahan (he even singes backup on one track). Of course, the album he made during that period is terrible...tradeoffs.

It's so good it makes me curse.

If their relationship ends, I will be heartbroken. That's how genuine this song is.
