Newsom, Joanna - Divers Lyrics

A diver is my love
(and I am his, if I am not deceived),
who takes one breath above, for every hour below the sea;
who gave to me a jewel
worth twice this woman's life (but would cost her less
than laying at low tide,
to see her true love phosphoresce).

And in an infinite regress:
Tell me, why is the pain of birth
lighter borne than the pain of death?
I ain't saying that I loved you first,
but I loved you best.

I know we must abide
each by the rules that bind us here:
the divers, and the sailors, and the women on the pier.
But how do you choose your form?
How do you choose your name? How do you choose your life?
How do you choose the time you must exhale,
and kick, and rise?

And in an infinite capsize:
Like a bull tearing down the coast,
double hulls bearing double masts–
I don't know if you loved me most, but you loved me last.

Recall the word you gave:
to count your way across the depths of this arid world,
where you would yoke the waves,
and lay a bed of shining pearls!
I dream it every night:
the ringing of the pail,
the motes of sand dislodged,
the shucking, quick and bright;
the twinned and cast-off shell reveal a single heart of white.

And in an infinite backslide:
Ancient border, sink past the West,
like a sword at the bearer's fall.
I can't claim that I knew you best,
but did you know me at all?

A woman is alive!
A woman is alive;
you do not take her for a sign in nacre on a stone,
alone, unfaceted and fine.
And never will I wed.
I'll hunt the pearl of death to the bottom of my life,
and ever hold my breath,
till I may be the diver's wife.

See how the infinite divides:
and the divers are not to blame
for the rift, spanning distant shores.
You don't know my name,
but I know yours.

  27. M.... C....

    Beautiful voice and lyrics

  28. k.... ....

Even though Paul Thomas Anderson directed this, nothing does Joanna justice until you see her in concert and wonder at her ability to remember lyrics song after song... and music that does not follow the usual A B A B C format. She is indeed a genius. 💖

  29. A.... F....

I love that her songs are longer then others

  30. B.... B....

Discovered Joanna Newsom by her own reputation (not Andy's influence) a few months back. Definitely loving her style.
Similar tho not 100% identical (non-harpist) artists to those who already love Joanna's style of music:
Kate Bush (Reccomendation: In Search of Peter Pan)
Björk (Some of you might've seen this coming - I'd reccomend her latest ''The Gate")
    Suzanne Vega (Reccomendation: Fancy Poultry)

    Honorable mention:
Regina Spektor (Not as atmospheric but sometimes similar: Après Moi)

I know I might catch some hate from established audiophiles, but I just hope some fresh ears with a penchant for new impressions are ready to enjoy :3

  31. R.... M....

Such a wonderful video. It really lives up to the song quality.

  32. T.... ....

Man I'm getting some Simon and Garfunkel, Jose' Gonzales, Imogen Heap, a little Radiohead, and Crosby/Nash vibes from this. In other words this is phenomenal!

  33. a.... 8....

Existing just to hear this one time would be enough.

  34. B.... P....

I put a boulder down, and Joanna Newsom appeared in a burst of foliage to announce "Yahaha! You found me!"

  35. B.... I....

This would sound amazing amped up with huge sounds and a huge voice. Maybe orchestra and rock drums and dio or someone on vocals.

  36. A.... D....

Hold in loving awe, them that can make beauty out of nothing.

  37. G.... R....

    Amazing 💚

  38. D.... S....

I'm a big Paul Thomas Anderson fan but this doesn't work IMO. The song is too dramatic and the video makes it seem kind of corny. In fairness, I don't think music like this can even have an effective music video. It's just not an appropriate format for this style.

  39. M.... O....

Reminds me so much of Kate Bush ❤️

i’m a fan of b99, and when i heard that andy samberg’s wife was an acclaimed harpist/artist, i knew i had to check her out (it just seemed bizarre to me, frankly). but the first time i tried to listen, i couldn’t stand her voice? it was just too grating for me, at first. (‘81 is actually the song that had me falling in love with her.) cut to me now, a year later, enraptured by her voice and her music and her lyrics. i’m so glad i gave her another try, because i can’t stop listening to her.

  43. L.... ....

The opening reminds me so much of the song "Dragon Boy/Bottomless Pit" from the Spirited Away soundtrack. I love it.

It’s beautiful like the chance encounter of an umbrella and sewing machine on a dissecting table , as a reincarnation of Kate Bush !

She is the most beautiful germanic woman I've ever seen. If she's french or dutch or what have you. Man she's just so breathtaking especially with that voice and her harp skills! Mama mia!! 😍

her voice is annoying as fuck.

Now this is a representation of Joanna Newsom that I can get used to —an omnipresent, god-like vision in the clouds that makes angel sounds over the mountains and tree tops.

  58. R.... ....

This kind of emotion is what’s missing from popular music today, this song evokes true feelings of sadness within me and I cannot commend the writing enough, truly an amazing song.

I'm seeing her live tomorrow in fallowfield, Manchester

  68. D.... B....

PTA has good taste. Fiona Apple, Joanna Newsom...

  69. D.... d....

    You are simply magical.

  70. R.... ....

The people who used to say she couldn't sing are a bit quiet these days like.

    R.... ....

@008Invisibleman maybe, I'm not very classy so it's possible. Not good to me doesn't mean not good to all. I love me some t-swift

    R.... ....

Joanna has a terrible vocal technique which nonetheless fulfills all the requirements to sing her music. Vocal technique does not equal quality singing

    R.... ....

@008Invisibleman Hey, I like Taylor Swift and Joanna Newsom. Completely different things, but Swift is plenty subtle in other ways.

    R.... ....

You can say you don't like her vocals, but to say she cant sing is retarded.

    R.... ....

She can indeed sing but it doesn't sound particularly good.

  71. L.... N....

joana newsom always look scary, her face, her voice dont know why. I cant really say what style of her music. it sounded strange, dont know should I classify her music newage, jazz, duwop, country, classical, pop ....it combination of alot of things and just sounded freak.

  72. r.... ....

I love the accompaniment. Her voice drives me up the fucking wall.

  73. C.... G....

5th word she said and I'm already holding back my tears. Love you Joanna ❤️

  74. Y.... ....

let joanna and aurora perform together!!1

  75. H.... b....

She sing with the splended wonder of a child sort of rythm and and canter but also with an intimate story telling ability that draws you in like an old soul speaking wisdom. I'm enchanted

  76. J.... B....

Joanna is one of the most talented Female Lyricist of all time. Like her or hate her, you have to recognize her amazing talent. I think she is amazing, distant cousin of Robert Frost.

  77. E.... S....

When I listen most of the time I have no idea what she is saying but to see this I can decipher words, lip read I guess. It makes sense now.

  78. J.... K....

This is the one they used for the new Hungry Howie rolls, rolls were so good, song's alright too.

  79. J.... P....

I really tried to like her. This is total garbage.

  80. B.... V....

The 4th album sounds really good. I wasn't sure where she was going after Van Dyke Parks ruined her second album.

    B.... V....

Ummmmm, come again? His orchestrations were great.

  81. B.... ....

now this is how u deconstruct patriarchy through song , lmao

  82. E.... ....

Oh, this one pushes very hard. I will yield to that sword point and live on.

  83. M.... M....

    Great video!!

  84. k.... 2....

i can't believe Andy Samberg is married to her

  85. I.... ....

i think God is the diver and she is speaking of the sacred marriage between God and the soul.

  86. J.... L....

    This is a tune!

  87. T.... ....

Seeing Joanna's chest rise and fall with each breath makes me whimper inside.

  88. M.... F....

I think of her as a modern bard. Her singing is breathtaking, her storytelling is fantastic and the harp ties it all together nicely.

  89. P.... B....

When she stops singing for a few seconds as "A woman is alive" plays -- shivers!!

  90. k.... ....

I don't understand this, I hate her voice but at the same time I'm drawn to it.

  92. N.... P....

Joanna Newsom's music is one of the best things that has ever happened to me. Some 60 years from now, if I realise I am on my deathbed, I would put her entire albums on play and silently pass away, crying and so, so satisfied that I didn't miss her music.

    N.... P....

Yes, and also the films of Andy Samberg!

    S.... J....

Eh, who is? I'm a huge Bush fan, but I've come around to appreciating Newsom in her own right. (Not every quirky female artist needs to be compared to Bush then dismissed). Have One on Me and Divers are a couple of my favorite albums in recent years.

  96. A.... N....

No. He got this all wrong. She doesn't peer through this song she completely owns her perspective on mythology as a master of this ode to the relationship btwn a trying male and the unknowable femininity -

  97. E.... ....

  98. G.... ....
