Newsies Original Broadway Cast - The Bottom Line Lyrics

[Pulitzer:]
Gentlemen, we need to sell more papers. There's an answer right before your eyes, but you're just not thinking this through
Nunzio knows, when
He's cutting my hair
Trim a bit here and then
Trim a bit there
Just a modest adjustment
Can fatten the bottom line

[Bunsen:]
What if we cut back personnel?

[Seitz:]
How about a few salary trims?

[Bunsen:]
We could lower the price of the paper

[Pulitzer:]
Bankrupting me even faster! let me try again
Shaving is tricky: the razor
Should float
Shave me too close and you
May slit my throat
Its the simplest solutions
That bolster the bottom line

[Bunsen:]
I've got it! if we charge the newsies sixty cents per hundred instead of fifty

[Seitz:]
They'd have to sell ten more papers just to earn the same amount as always

[Pulitzer:]
My thought exactly. It's genius

[Hannah:]
It's gonna be awfully rough on those children

[Pulitzer:]
Nonsense, they'll be learning a real life lesson in economics. I couldn't offer them a better education if they were my own
Give me a week and
I'll train them to be
Like an army that's
Marching to war
Proud of themselves and so
Grateful to me
They'll be begging to pay even more!
When there's dirt
On our shoes, boys
For god's sake, relax!
Why throw them out?
All we need is some wax
Listen well to these barbershop lessons
For they'll see you through

[Employees:]
When you're stuck in the muck you'll be fine
You'll erase any trace of decline

[Seitz:]
With a trim

[Hannah:]
And a snip

[Bunsen:]
And a shine!

[Pulitzer:]
And the power of the press
Yes! once again is mine!
The price for the newsies goes up in the morning!
Just a few common cents
Gents, that's the bottom line!

[Employees:]
Every new outcome
It's income for you
Thanks to that bottom line!

    Melody110476

  31. Marismella

I WISH he'd slit your throat..

    Taehyung's Bag

    Marismell *Sweeney Todd anyone?*

  32. Jaycee Andres

does no one realize the line "give me a week and I'll train them like an army going to war" cause it's completely ironic

    Cosmo Cosmoton

I think it's the idea of how army's had very little time to prepare for war and like how for the revolutionary war America's soldiers had little to no formal training- or one weeks training

    Kahtisemo

I think because within the week the boys DID form an army... Against him. XD

    tera boo

Also, "Shave me too close and you may slit my throat"?Pretty much, all of that is true but it backfired on him.:p

  33. Jorden Amir

    This really creeps me out.

  34. Manuel Orozco

Selling papers must have been really tough business at the end of the 19th Century!

  35. MrAwesomeLuis

They would actually have to sell 25 more papers, in order to make the same amount off of 100 papers. Math: At 100 papers, each making them .5 cent profit, they would get 50 cents from 100 papers. If they made .4 cents profit, from 100 papers they would get 40 cents total. In order to get 10 more cents in profit, they would have to sell 25 papers, because (25 papers)* (.4 cents profit per paper) = 10 cents profit. The point is they have to sell 25% more in order to make the same amount.

    Miriam Belliston

    Haha nice MrAwesomeLuis

    Kathryn Miller

    Woah math

  36. Ali Parry

I'm getting serious King George vibes from him.

  38. SchayBros

That last belt.... So good. It's not fair.

    Josh Freilich

Bad news: apparently, now it's just an option up.
The normal way to sing it now is just a vaudeville slide from the major third to the root.
    "That's the bottom liiiiiiiiiiii~ine!!!"

I like it, but I'll miss the one from the CD.
