Newman, Randy - Louisiana Lyrics

What had happened down there was the wind had changed
Cloud rolled in from the north and it started to rain
It rained real hard and it rained for a real long time
Six feet of water in the streets of Evangeline

The river rose all day, the river rose all night
Some got lost in the flood, some got away all right
The river busted through clear down to Plaquemine
Six feet of water in the streets of Evangeline

Louisiana, Louisiana
They're tryin' to wash us away
They're tryin' to wash us away
Louisiana, Louisiana
They're tryin' to wash us away
They're tryin' to wash us away

President Coolidge come down in a railroad train
With a little fat man with a notepad in his hand.
President say, "Little fat man, isn't it a shame
What the river has done to this poor cracker's land?"

Louisiana, Louisiana
They're tryin' to wash us away
They're tryin' to wash us away
Louisiana, Louisiana
They're tryin' to wash us away
They're tryin' to wash us away
They're tryin' to wash us away
They're tryin' to wash us away

Hurricane Betsy too. The same year the MRGO (Mississippi River Gulf Outlet) was finished. It served as a path for the water surge. Rumor was they blew the Arabi levee and left a barge lose at the 9th ward to break that levee at the Industrial Canal. Poor Evangeline.

As only Randy can do. He comes from a long line of musical success in his family. Composers and arrangers for the movies going way back to old Hollywood. Randy represents his family very well, they all must be very proud of him as he is of them. An American Treasure for sure. jamiepalumbo.com

They're having floods like that now. When I worked in Louisiana I remember Mr Renaud Crochet telling me about the 1927 flood in south Louisiana. (This was in 1978 that I knew him.)

Yea I live in Henderson LA and were pretty worried about it part of the leve had collapsed near my house and the water is getting higher , and they havent even opened the morganza spillway yet so were worried about when they do open it that it will be too much

@chris whut I hope you all are ok. I lived in Morgan City and Pierre Part. I live now in Hampton Roads in Virginia where we have bad storms at times but not like what you are having.

  33. B.... f....

Randy Newman depicts some of the American failures in a melancholic / optimistic way (enough to produce a catchy and talented song each time like Baltimore/short people), finding inspiration in an dramatic event like this one. Like Springsteen, he's a long time partner of the American collective unconscious. Love him and his subtle vulnerability. Love from France to your great country. May we stay partners in many ways. ;)

Ray Benson sings this sometimes on live shows and Marcia Ball does a great version too. Great song, super photos, thanks for posting.

Puerto Rico on our minds, as Twatter does nothing but brags about doing nothing. Has there ever been a worse human? Hat tip to Mr. Newman for an outstanding composition.

  49. D.... L....

Takes me back,  not to 1927 but it's easy to see  & feel so much of this diverse state of Lousiana...having grown up in Houston & friends in this state...What a state...

  50. D.... S....

Perhaps one of the very best Songs Newman has ever done. It chronicled the plight of Poor Southerners under a Republican Administration that didn't give a damn about them in the context of a National Disaster.

I'm born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. But Randy's songs of New Orleans, Louisiana, and other places in America, make me feel like they are also where I came from. I've visited New Orleans a few times, and spent a few days in Carville back in the 70s. Those places and their people enchanted me and will live with me forever.

  55. D.... S....

One of his absolute best songs of all time. I used to listen to his music for the usual top hits, but this one made me a believer in him, and the message he tries to convey.

  56. M.... L....

Randy has no peers. His imagery is perfection.

One of America’s greatest song writers - period

  62. C.... p....

I was just watching an interview with Mr. Newman on The Library of Congress channel. I recommend it, obviously. However, being new to You Tube, I was puzzled by the Comments being closed. Is this common? If so, is it the behavior of the people writing their opinions? I understand the man has written some ironic and sometimes possibly troubling lyrics in his songs, but that is the function of Art. Sad. A great artist. A great American.

  63. L.... C....

Beautiful and touching compilation of historical photos to Randy Newman's timeless song.  In the same spirit, we have posted a new video called  called "Human Kindness: Heroes of Houston Hurricane Harvey," with an inspired new recording of Randy Newman's, "I Think It's Going To Rain Today,”  and a choreographed montage of photographs of actual Houston Hurricane Harvey Heroes that are both heartbreaking and heartwarming.
