New Order - Nothing But A Fool Lyrics

I saw her face
In a dream last night
And it hurt so much
Yes, it hurt so much
She was in my mind
As I drank my wine
And now I count the costs
Of the one I lost
She went away
To a different place
And she was never to return
Whatever happened to that girl?

Sometimes you don't know what you've got
You think you're better than the rest
And the world belongs to you
But you're nothing but a fool
If you can hold her in your hands
If you can feel her in your heart
Don't ever let her run away
Don't ever let her drift away
Cause it will break you later on
When you're left there on your own
Don't ever let her slip away
Don't ever let her drift away

It's a crying shame
It caused so much pain
It's sad that way
It was me that day
Cause I turned you away
Like I didn't know who you were
I was such a fool
I was so cruel
And the years went by
And without a word of lie
I still love you
But what can I do?

Hold her in your hand
Feel her in your heart
Don't ever let her drift away (let her drift away)

Hold her in your hand
Feel her in your heart
Don't ever let her drift away (let her drift away)

Can't stand lesbians or clones, and this band seems to only support both.

    Good song.

But the beginning reminds me of Bon Jovi - Wanted Dead or Alive...

    GLORIOSO, PURO NEW ORDER.

  6. M.... ....

This is pure love and i love this song & New Order

  7. P.... L....

Okay I just heard this for the first time and freaking balled on the street trying to contain it. For the people who think this is cheese, I cant imagine youve ever lost anything important. This hit me like a cross bow through the chest. Plain and simple genius as usual. New Order and Bernard Sumner have MASTERED the art of saying just enough with lyrics overlaying absolutley brilliant unmistakable NO music. Not to mention, this song feels like it could be a response to SUB CULTURE, where he is young, arrogant, and stubborn. "In the end you will submit..." Well, they didn't, and this song is the result. "One of these days when you sit by yourself, you'll realize you cant shaft with out someone else"...woooops, Nothing But A Fool is Bernard admitting he was wrong in retrospect. Just brilliant some 30 years later... Thank you New Order.

    P.... L....

People who dislike Bernard's lyrics in general just haven't lived long enough to relate to them........

Your analysis is spot on m8. Bernard is one of the most underrated lyricists ever, his work in general is quite underappreciated. I hate how people just dismiss him as "not Ian Curtis" and New Order as "not Joy Division". I mean, both bands are excellent (I actually consider them to be the same band but in different stages). Less poetic but more relatable

  8. M.... R....

I love this tune. The verses have exactly the same structure as Joy Division's 24 Hours (unintentional I guess) which makes it beautifully poignant

  9. B.... C....

After 7 tracks of Music Complete you would think things couldn't get any better and then this belter starts .... After 35 years New Order can still surprise me I just hope they bring out more music.

  10. R.... H....

By far, their best song in years, and should've been a single.I have no idea why they release some of their lesser tracks as singles, and leave the real beauties as album tracks. The backing vocals and strings on this are just pure heaven, and have they even played this live yet ?

  11. h.... l....

Everytime I listen to new order they force me to look at life and the way that I view it, like don't take things for granted and if you do this is what happens.

  12. M.... B....

eu3 new order tudo fazer ser bom me agrada eu gosto mas quero saber porque escutem somzeira muito bom cara quando ser muito ruim ser tão ruim ficar boa eu não entendo iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii y ~

  29. P.... C....

I heard this song for the first time on February 2016. I was travelling from Madrid to México and I listened this song at least 10 times. I love New Order and I have a Gibson SG just like Bernard Sumner.

  34. T.... B....

  35. A.... N....

    i cant belive

  36. S.... M....

    this track is awesome!!!

  37. R.... ....

  38. A.... i....

How do they produce such great songs after all these years. Heavenly

  39. M.... B....

    The 80's brought me here

  40. n.... ....

    Why do people comment!?

  41. P.... ....

Can't wait to see NO tonight in NYC!!!!!

  42. J.... R....

Just me hearing apocalpyse now at the beginning then

  43. N.... S....

Having followed Bernad et al since the very early days I wasnt looking forward to another album showing how a band slips away. But this album slaps you even if it really hurts when you see people associatjng them with fluff like the Pet Shop Boys - This track has all the trademarks us old timers remember and I'll overlook some of this album just hear them drive this song. Long live the bass

    N.... S....

I used to think Pet Shop Boys were fluff until I heard Introspective. I recommend you give it a go.

  44. J.... D....

    Deadwood much?

  45. C.... M....

    disco music

  46. m.... g....

    TEMAZOOOO

  47. M.... 1....

Final section really reminds me off the classic "All Day Long" from Brotherhood album.

  48. U.... T....

I love ❤ this song 🎶 very well done x

  49. P.... C....

    Love it

  50. O.... M....

    que chingona esta esta rola!!!!

  51. T.... T....

My favorite song off the new album. Took their sound to some new places while staying in touch with what I love most about NO.

  52. B.... N....

brilliant - but should end before the backing vocals really kick in & ruin it

    B.... N....

+Mauricio Noguera Gotta have a few long endings, its the old NO tradition :)

  53. D.... A....

    'nothing but the best'

  54. M.... A....

Awesome song. I have been listening to New Order since the 80s. This new album is extraordinary. They've still go it!

    M.... A....

+Mary Ann Bashaw Me too, and I've been buying all their new, since then. Never enough!

    M.... A....

totally agree..I go back far enough to have enjoyed joy division ..and this just may be my favorite song they ever recorded..and they have many

  55. A.... C....

No es de las mejores del album pero tampoco es mala

  56. A.... T....

My wife and myself are travelling from Amsterdam to Paris on wednesday the third of november to see New Order.
We're both 50 Up and New Order is part of our history together. Our favorite song?.......Ceremony! I let you know how it was when we get back to Amsterdam!

    A.... T....

Ceremony is also part of my life with my wife, back in the late 80’s when we started to date in Brazil. Cheers!

    A.... T....

Ceremony is also my favorite. Wife and I are going in January to see New Order in Miami Beach. We are sooooo excited.

  57. s.... b....

    my fav on this album

  58. S.... ....

This tune is the only one i like..unfortunately I do not like this new album..

  59. '.... R....

Stretching here, but, only time I had chance to see NO was at Jones Beach in 1987 with Echo & Bunnymen and Gene Loves Jezebel. Any chance of an American tour in 2016? And coming to Memphis? (I told you I was stretching!)

  60. K.... B....

The epic 'Nothing But a Fool' is the most moving / heartbreaking / 'longing' track on this album. It's my favourite song (at the moment) followed by, in order of preference - The Game, Tutti Fruity, Academic, Plastic, Stray Dog, Superheated, Singularity, Restless, Walking on the Highline, Unlearn This Hatred. Any-either way, I'm totally astounded how complete this album is.

  61. A.... S....

About the most enjoyable seven minutes and forty three seconds you can ever experience!

  62. S.... ....

I have been listening to New Order since the golden 80`s and it is amazing that they are still going strong in their music production! This tune is one of the best on this album!

  63. J.... G....

I go all the way back even to joy division days and this is phenomenal work. !!!!

  64. A.... H....

    Absolutely unmistakably New Order.....love it

  65. 3.... ....

Play this live for the sake of fucks.

  66. J.... B....

This track is so good, hope their playing it live, really enjoying this album,

  67. G.... ....

Love this song. Classic New Order, yet modern.

  68. f.... ....

    A+ music... great New Order

  69. V.... ....

    Loving this one, soooo good

  70. t.... ....

une pincée de Doors, de Joy Division, de pop music..., du très bon New Order ! vivement le prochain album !

  71. P.... M....

Peter hook probably will kill him self

  72. L.... H....

    Totally Brilliant!!

  73. D.... K....

Just for the chorus portions alone, this is my favorite song on the album. Fantastic!

    D.... K....

Dave K Those girls absolutely nailed it,and maybe that's why they don't do this live.Such a shame,as it's the best song on the album.

  74. H.... P....

half of this album is classic new order - up there with 'here to stay' and 'guilt is a useless emotion' - of the more recent classics

  75. B.... S....

This reminds me of the Brotherhood - Low Life era.

    B.... S....

that is true.... Broterhood is back again but fresh and superb

  76. A.... ....

Best song in years. Class. Melancholic masterpiece, Barney sounds desperate again.

  77. G.... W....

ace song album brilliant see you in Nov

    G.... W....

    You seen them live

    G.... W....

Yes, in 2013. Would have liked it to see them promoting this album on this the tour but oh well.

    G.... W....

It's my first time been a fan for years

    G.... W....

    I'm excited for you. You'll have a blast! :)

    G.... W....

    Defo cheers

  78. L.... M....

    It's got real presence ..

  79. A.... L....

Could do without the cheesy backing vocals that seemed to take up minutes at a time. Otherwise, decent tune, lyrically and instrumentally.

    A.... L....

+Amanda Laggan don't ever let her drift away...

    A.... L....

Amanda Laggan Damn ! Those backing vocals are my favourite part of those song, and it's what makes it different from whatever else they have done.I've been a fan of this outfit (Stiff Kittens/Warsaw/Joy Division/New Order and will absolutely include Hooky and The Light in this)since 1978,owned hundreds and hundreds of their material, but in all honesty, this one track has put itself in front of all that they have released, that's a big call, especially with their back catalogue, but, this song just veers far away enough,to make it sound different than the "old" New Order.

    A.... L....

Thank you. Someone who knows what theyre talking about.

  80. B.... ....

My favourite song, hear the echos off Joy Division in this beautifull track

  81. D.... H....

As a longstanding New Order fan...IMHO this new album is just dreadful, it's not even remotely as good as their 80's output; NO jumped the shark with that bloody awful World in Motion football track.

    D.... H....

    +Douglas Hall

Pretty sure you are not the majority as Music Complete has been critically acclaimed all round,oh and World in Motion is the best football song ever only Neworder could make John Barnes rapping sound fantastic !!

    D.... H....

+David Hill I dunno, Regret came ofter that, the last truly great NO record

  82. Q.... D....

Best song on this album. It's actually two songs in one. Very interesting transition from the first part to the second. Well done

    Q.... D....

+The God Effect Ah, you're too kind! :) I just write how I feel, lacking on the technical/objective side but can one really be objective when it comes to music? I don't know! Yes, I know of Electronic (only one of the side projects I was aware of heh). I never really felt them much. I think Monaco is better from what I'm hearing ;) By all means, suggest away any live shows/bands you like. I appreciate the insight! Btw, have you listened to that Duran Duran album yet?

    Q.... D....

I did, thanks to you :)    It was the surprise of this year.  A great album, brings me back.  I'm also a big fan of Underworld, especially their beginning stuff, Dirty Epic (a masterpiece), Pearl's Girl, etc.  Saw them in
Chicago back in 1993 when they just released their first of  many awesome albums.  Interesting lyrics, great rhythm, nothing can touch them in my opinion.  Check it out if you already haven't.

    Q.... D....

    +Big Ebola BLT?

    Q.... D....

+The God Effect A bit unfair comparing anyone to New Order, because they'll always come off second best in any New Order fan's eyes. New Order have had their lows, but their highs cannot be bettered, not even by modern day geniuses like Arcade Fire and dare I say Muse. We all have our different minutes of bliss though. I really like the Perfect Kiss, but its not as blissful as BLT, Your Silent Face or Temptation imo.

    Q.... D....

+The God Effect I'll agree with it being the best song on the album, although I like Tutti Frutti too, but the chorus of Nothing but a Fool is magical and lifts it up so high, I can live with having to wait two minutes for it.

  83. D.... M....

Favorite song on the new album.

  84. C.... G....

    Sonic Youth guitars?

    C.... G....

    +Chris Guevara Smashing Pumpkins.

    C.... G....

+Chris Guevara First thing I thought of. That part is standard SY, the others are followers. I still hear SY when it starts every time. Not bad, just odd combining the two for me

    C.... G....

+Chris Guevara Bob Mould guitars. Closed case.

    C.... G....

Agree Chris, also reminded me of Silversun Pickups but they were heavily influenced by Sonic Youth anyway.

    C.... G....

Nah,they were doing this shit before Sonic Youth, only got refined a bit more on this beautiful track.

  85. P.... R....

Sounds like a Smashing Pumpkins song. While good, it doesn't fit NO/JD. That bass is so Smashing Pumpkins. If Billy sang this song, it would be great.

    P.... R....

+Perry Ritter Bill would never admit to being "Nothing but a Fool."

    P.... R....

+Perry Ritter Spot on, Perry. I just mentioned how much of this album reminded me of Billy Corgan's The Future Embrace. I absolutely agree with you.

    P.... R....

+Brian Marks Haha, indeed. That lovable, egoistical twat is faultless.

  86. C.... T....

    a masterpiece

  87. b.... ....

    yes this is brilliant

  88. D.... ....

Reminded me a bit of w.a.s.p.s the crimson idol lol

  89. A.... H....

    beautifull

  90. P.... H....

    Gives me the goosebumps!

  91. d.... ....

    Love it!

  92. .... A....

    love It

  93. P.... E....

    Beautiful, Preciosa Cancion!!

  94. D.... B....

    Vou chorar.

  95. A.... W....

This is the least embarrassing track on the record and the chorus actually provides the only chills to be found anywhere!

    A.... W....

+Andrew Wells peak capitalism talking about music releases in terms of lawsuits like a paralegal AI program from the near-future or s/t I love things that read like chat transcripts from an 80s cyberpunk novella about the exhausting mundanity of dystopian preoccupations

Love this track too, for entirely different reasons, it has sold me on the album!

    A.... W....

+Andrew Wells   is Plenum still going?

    A.... W....

+Andrew Wells Fuck off going on about Hooky, doesn't sound like sunrise to me, move on, Hooky's a grumpy git who's more interested in his past then the future

    A.... W....

+Andrew Wells I don't think the album's embarrassing at all. Much of it is brilliant. Best record since Technique.

    A.... W....

+John Van LOL only in theory... but then it was always only a theory ;)

  96. F.... J....

Damn .. This is amazing .. 30 years a fan and still u produce lyrical magic !! Thank's for keeping it Real 🙏🏽

  97. j.... ....

    sick tune!!!

  98. M.... ....

Love the Enio Morricone style intro and that chorus with those strings, just awesome!

    M.... ....

the intro reminds me of the 'don abandons alice' song on 28 weeks later

    M.... ....

+Monkey Magic It reminds me of the guitars at the beginning of Unkle's Eye For An Eye.This is my fav song on the whole album.

    M.... ....

    +Mauricio Noguera true
