New Model Army - Green And Grey Lyrics

The time I think most clearly
The time I drift away
Is on the bus ride
That meanders
Up these valleys of green and grey

I get to think about what might have been
And what may yet come true
And I get to pass the rainy mile
Thinking of you

And all the while, all the while
I still hear that call
To the land of gold and poison
That beckons to us all

Nothing changes here very much
You used to say it never will
The pubs are all full on Friday nights
And things get started still

We spent hours last week with Billy-Boy
Bleeding, yeah, queuing in casualty
Staring at those posters we used to laugh at
Never-never land, palm trees by the sea

Well, there was no need for those guys to hurt him so bad
When all they had to do was knock him down
But no one asks too many questions like that anymore
Since you left this town

And tomorrow brings another train
Another young brave steals away
But you're the one I remember
From these valleys of the green and the grey

You used to talk about winners and losers all the time
As if that was all there was
As if we were not of the same blood family
As if we lived by different laws

Do you owe so much less to these rain swept hills
Than you owe to your good self?
Is it true that the world has always got to be something
That seems to happen somewhere else?

For God's sake
Don't you realize
That I still hear that call?
Do you think you're so brave
Just to go running
To that which beckons to us all?

And tomorrow brings another train
Another young brave steals away
But you're the one I remember
From these valleys of the green and the grey

No, not for one second
Did you look behind you
As you were walking away
Never once did you wish any of us well
Those who had chosen to stay

And if that's what it takes to make it
In the place where you live today
Then I guess you'll never read one of these letters that I sent
From these valleys of the green and the grey

Got 12" vinyl and 7" picture disc. Played them to death. What a thought provoking song this is. The north is at times a grimm place I know I live there born there will die there but songs like this make it a better place we are proud of.

This one isn't about nationality or locality. Don't think just because you are from the North it's about you. This is universal, eternal. Great fucking band. Great fucking band!

Lyrics are very powerful - but really! From a band, that through their ambition, tour all over the world. Hmmm sounds like a great deal of hypocritical bullshit, as does nearly all their lyrics sound. Music great, lyrics well written but empty - NMA!

    c.... d....

You had to be there, man. You obviously weren't...

    c.... d....

TBH, I don't know a whole lot about NMA or the history, as I've only known of the band for a couple years - but an artist doesn't have to live their art for it to be meaningful or relevant regardless, imo.

    c.... d....

    @Lintu .
You'll have a shit band with that mentality bro! Gotta live it to give it, gotta blow it to know it! ... 👌

The legend of this song is that it was part written on the bus from Halifax to Bradford through Queensbury. The 576. Valleys of green and grey written on the back of a seat. Totally think its about me.

    P.... T....

Well it certainly wasn't written about them - they chased the posters of never-neverland and the wrote a song demeaning everyone else who did the same thing. Why are all socialists such fucking hypocrites.

    P.... T....

Phil  Your story is heartbreaking. BUT I couldn't care less about it. NMA is just great.....

    P.... T....

charles d..I doubt any of the band would class themselves as socialists and besides, who said Art can't be contrary? Not to mention writing in the 3rd person. If this sticks in yr craw check out Drag It Down. You might melt!

I lived in Leeds, worked in Guisely, Morley etc...as a back up nurse for Leeds Community Mental Health Trust. Many years ago....I know the valleys of green and grey. Yorkshire ...it is a strangely beautiful place.

great band and perhaps my favourite nma tune?

  56. B.... W....

From my favorite NMA album ov all time!!! (AND my favorite NMA song also!) I used 2 put this song on either at the beginning, or thee end ov thee all ages Goth night we had in Boulder, in thee early 2 mid 90's, at thee old 'Ground Zero', on The Hill... (Called 'Black Monday') Ironically, this was one ov thee only songs I could remember word 4 word while I was in prison, being rather shell shocked from that entire experience, (Jan. 2002- Aug. 2004), in which I had to do some time in 'Ad-seg' toward thee end sadly... (Administrative segregation/long term Hole confinement) I used 2 sing this song 2 myself (at thee top ov my lungs), in the very tall GREY concrete exercise hallway while in thee Ad-seg unit I was in while wearing thee forest GREEN prison suits thee Colorado Dept. of Corrections kindly provided me during my stay there! So thee title ov this song took on a whole new meaning 4 me! I also had a local Denver paper (The Westword)being mailed in 2 me while there and discovered that NMA was coming and playing at a club in Denver called 'The Climax', which my good friend Kurt Ottaway was booking the bands at! I was blown away and devastated I'ld not be able 2 attend!!! I drew the Celtic emblem from this album in black ink on the front ov thee envelope with flames around it and sent him a letter, begging him 2 try and get me a set list, a shirt, or their autographs, as he and I share a great love and respect 4 this band! I was overjoyed when seeing him, upon my release, 2 discover he had gotten a poster signed by thee entire band, in my absence, a tee-shirt AND a setlist!!! Now THAT'S a friend!!! Eternally grateful... :) :) :)

    B.... W....

Small world. I remember going to ground zero once or twice back in the day when I was drifting back and forth cross the country, and eventually settled in Colorado for a while. I was at that show, and hope life has treated you better since you got out.

The original UK release of Thunder and Consolation ended at Archway Towers, the other tracks are from other sources and probably used as a bolster for Europe and USA market. Doesn't matter though, great band ,great tracks.

I live in Leeds and this song is all about the local area and i tell you this is a perfect essay into this area.

    m.... g....

    @SIyDoll
    Yeah, that's what I mean...

Also, having been to the place where NMA Originated, and given the rain sounds in the intro, it's possible the 'grey' refers to the sky, rather than the brown and red of the buildings.

    m.... g....

It was wrote about the hills around Bradford.

    m.... g....

I never thought of it like that.
I also assumed he meant the buildings

    The greatest song ever written

  84. d.... ....

It's all a load of balls... Welcome to Ireland. This bus ride is grey for ones who know what this journey is.

    d.... ....

NMA is fronted by Justin Sullivan. That's an Irish last name and a Roman Catholic first name.
Probably why he chose "New Model Army" for the name of his band; I get the impression he doesn't like himself much.

  85. S.... ....

It's amazing how you can remember almost every single word eh? I recently re-ordered Thunder and Consolation and Ghost of Cain, from the NMA site, stuck two fingers up to Amazon a while ago :) 225, Green & Grey & Bodmin Pill are my favourite tracks, but every single song on those 2 albums is absolute quality. Starting to get to know the newer stuff but i think this was their better era. Peace

  86. s.... h....

Totally agree mate. Started to listen to them again last year just in time for their 30th anniversary tour. Absolutely love this song, brings back so many memories good and bad, always will be my favourite NMA track. Peace.

  90. S.... ....

Greeks, Germans, Brits, Americans. This is good, we need the world to unite. not just to listen to this awesome band. We need to unite to rid ourselves of the bankers governments, monarchies and corporations that are currently running the show, murdering people and ruining lives and economies just so they get fat. Been listening to NMA again for the forst time in twenty odd years. Lyrics are more poignant today then they ever have been. Talk about finger on the pulse! One of the true great bands

    S.... ....

This is the best comment i ever read written by a smart person and 5 years later this bullshit is still ruling our world. Is there hope for humanity that keeps on ignoring the very meaning of its significance?
