Lyrics are very powerful - but really! From a band, that through their ambition, tour all over the world. Hmmm sounds like a great deal of hypocritical bullshit, as does nearly all their lyrics sound. Music great, lyrics well written but empty - NMA!

TBH, I don't know a whole lot about NMA or the history, as I've only known of the band for a couple years - but an artist doesn't have to live their art for it to be meaningful or relevant regardless, imo.

Saw them play this in an old venue in Cork with arches and darkness and I thought I was going to die with emotion. Stunning band. Great song.

The legend of this song is that it was part written on the bus from Halifax to Bradford through Queensbury. The 576. Valleys of green and grey written on the back of a seat. Totally think its about me.

I lived in Leeds, worked in Guisely, Morley etc...as a back up nurse for Leeds Community Mental Health Trust. Many years ago....I know the valleys of green and grey. Yorkshire ...it is a strangely beautiful place.

From my favorite NMA album ov all time!!! (AND my favorite NMA song also!) I used 2 put this song on either at the beginning, or thee end ov thee all ages Goth night we had in Boulder, in thee early 2 mid 90's, at thee old 'Ground Zero', on The Hill... (Called 'Black Monday') Ironically, this was one ov thee only songs I could remember word 4 word while I was in prison, being rather shell shocked from that entire experience, (Jan. 2002- Aug. 2004), in which I had to do some time in 'Ad-seg' toward thee end sadly... (Administrative segregation/long term Hole confinement) I used 2 sing this song 2 myself (at thee top ov my lungs), in the very tall GREY concrete exercise hallway while in thee Ad-seg unit I was in while wearing thee forest GREEN prison suits thee Colorado Dept. of Corrections kindly provided me during my stay there! So thee title ov this song took on a whole new meaning 4 me! I also had a local Denver paper (The Westword)being mailed in 2 me while there and discovered that NMA was coming and playing at a club in Denver called 'The Climax', which my good friend Kurt Ottaway was booking the bands at! I was blown away and devastated I'ld not be able 2 attend!!! I drew the Celtic emblem from this album in black ink on the front ov thee envelope with flames around it and sent him a letter, begging him 2 try and get me a set list, a shirt, or their autographs, as he and I share a great love and respect 4 this band! I was overjoyed when seeing him, upon my release, 2 discover he had gotten a poster signed by thee entire band, in my absence, a tee-shirt AND a setlist!!! Now THAT'S a friend!!! Eternally grateful... :) :) :)

Thunder and Consolation (1989) Funny the songs were written in 1987/88 but released in 1989, why did they wait?

The original UK release of Thunder and Consolation ended at Archway Towers, the other tracks are from other sources and probably used as a bolster for Europe and USA market. Doesn't matter though, great band ,great tracks.

Also, having been to the place where NMA Originated, and given the rain sounds in the intro, it's possible the 'grey' refers to the sky, rather than the brown and red of the buildings.

NMA is fronted by Justin Sullivan. That's an Irish last name and a Roman Catholic first name.
Probably why he chose "New Model Army" for the name of his band; I get the impression he doesn't like himself much.

It's amazing how you can remember almost every single word eh? I recently re-ordered Thunder and Consolation and Ghost of Cain, from the NMA site, stuck two fingers up to Amazon a while ago :) 225, Green & Grey & Bodmin Pill are my favourite tracks, but every single song on those 2 albums is absolute quality. Starting to get to know the newer stuff but i think this was their better era. Peace

Totally agree mate. Started to listen to them again last year just in time for their 30th anniversary tour. Absolutely love this song, brings back so many memories good and bad, always will be my favourite NMA track. Peace.

Greeks, Germans, Brits, Americans. This is good, we need the world to unite. not just to listen to this awesome band. We need to unite to rid ourselves of the bankers governments, monarchies and corporations that are currently running the show, murdering people and ruining lives and economies just so they get fat. Been listening to NMA again for the forst time in twenty odd years. Lyrics are more poignant today then they ever have been. Talk about finger on the pulse! One of the true great bands
