Neutral Milk Hotel - Bucket Lyrics
Shadows on my wall
They creep and crawl in burning white
They dream of waterfalls
Catching slow bright streams of light.
Bucket full of fear
But it's alright
I'm on an isle
And I've still got time to fly away
Shadows in my dreams
They're painting scenes of time with you
I'm hoping all these things
and the strength they bring will pull me through
Bucket full of fear
But it's alright
I'm on an isle
And I've still got time to fly away.

Neutral Milk Hotel Bucket Comments
I just love this band more and more as time goes on, wish I'd caught them when they were touring
Glycerine brought me here.
I guarantee Gavin Rossdale never heard of NMH in the mid 90s. People are aware that literally hundreds if not thousands of songs share the same chord progressions right?
Neutral Milk Hotel didn't release the sound of winter, so they're automatically better.
Shadows on my wall
They creep and crawl on through the night
They dream of waterfalls
Catching small bright streams of light
Life can be so weird
A bucket full of tears
But it's alright
I've seen the light
And I've still got time to fly away
Shadows in my dreams
They're painting scenes of time with you
I'm hoping all these things
And strength it brings will see me through
And life can be so weird
A bucket full of tears
But it's alright
I've seen the light
And I've still got time to fly away
Isn't it fear the first time then tears the second time?
It's "I'm on an isle" not, "I've seen the light" Also, it's "they creep and crawl through burning white" Not, "the night"
so many songs share the same chord progression..
I love this song so much, I made a sort of music video for it on my channel! It does lack something most NMH songs have... I'm not sure what that is exactly, but I still love it!
I love the distortion especially
I'm interested in the music video you made, but when I look on your channel I cannot find it. Did you take it don't for some reason?
I wish Jeff Mangum would make a version of this with just the acoustic guitar and vocals.
/watch?v=78nG0umO8j0
It starts at around 0:35
@Alex Ellisson
thanks m8!
Oh but there is. He used to play this song in our living room in Ruston, LA, with only an acoustic guitar and Jeff's voice long before NMH became as big as they are now. I feel incredibly fortunate to have been friends with and involved in some of these guys other projects way back then.
Tired Eyes
Wow, that's amazing!
Only decent song this shitty band has ever released
@The Neverists yep, i am entitled to my opinion. thanks fam
Harambe Dindunuffin
Wow could you stuff any more dead memes into that username?
there is a character limit on youtube usernames so no unfortunately
The Neverists "fam"...lmfao
OoOoh boy you must like getting yelled at
Let's put this to rest. This song came out in 1992, Glycerine came out in 1995.
Booker O'Hare hahababa
I know this comment is a billion years old in internet time, but for the record, Jeff wrote this in 89/90.
@Seniour BurritoFace True
Let's get real guys, is a lot like glycerine. Not just the chords, but the strum pattern and tempo even are similar. Nobody is saying anyone copied anyone, but that's it's just kinda hard to hear this song and appreciate it the way it was meant to be when another song sharing a similar structure is more burned into our heads. Which sucks :(
Tyler Notluf now i keep hearing it:(
You realize this was made in 1992 right?
literally all the music these guys have made is good......like...since forever ago, all the way up through now
It's music. It's something to enjoy, don't ruin it for yourself with too much thought.
LIFE CAN BE SO WEEEEEEIRD
How strange it is to be anything at all... ;)
Yeah, the acoustic suffices for rhythm.
You should listen to My Bloody Valentine's "Sometimes" if you like that.
I love the idea of using heavy distortion and no drums.
The distortion is so thunderous that it almost makes a percussive sound
Doesn't include tracks from the tapes, though.
jimmy fallon was in a band?
robert shelton ?
Its actually F, C, Dm, and A#.
Your point still stands nonetheless.
why people use A# instead of Bb? it triggers me idk why
It's in the key of F so it should be Bb yeah
Seriously, they are chords. No owns the fucking chords. Just listen to the music.
Yeah because using G Em C and D means you copied every song before that including vivaldis bssoon concerto in mi minore. Get real guys.
Are we really going to pretend the chord prog is the only reason it sounds like glycerine 💅🏼
Just to clear up any confusion: this is NOT the version on Beauty, nor is it the version on Invent Yourself a Shortcake. It's from a 1994 compilation called "Periscope: Another Yo-Yo Compilation."
Periscope Another Yo Yo compilation

Does anybody know how they get that heavy, distorted sustain on guitar?
darwinsfinches i’m pretty sure that’s achieved by editing post-recording
@ReximusTyrannus you can buy the vinyl box set with all the demos, singles, and albums from neutral milk hotel, google it
I wish there were copies of all the demo tapes from NMH. I'd buy them all.
what is a bush?
@toobsockproductions
Indeed. Besides, I HARDLY HARDLY doubt Bush knew of Neutral Milk Hotel back then or if anybody in particular. Even when Aeroplane came out, it's not like it was the biggest album of the year or anything.
@giantrobotbil I REMEMBER THAT!
Damn this guy blew up
@mytoecold Crazy, i was just randomly browsing neutral milk hotel and i see your comment. i met you at a ben kweller show and you dubbed me Jason Mraz. i guess i can't call you 12 year old kid anymore.
this sounds like way better quality than the "beauty" version. where did you get this one?
wtf drew why have i never seen this comment here i love you too much right now why are you here
bush sux this is a hidden masterpeice
Theres a video called axis of awesome 4 chords..watch that
Damn it people! No one copied anyone! Lots of songs use this chord progression!!
@acorn2taco
I agree.
Omg. this song. this song. i ♥ it! it somehow reminds me of when i was a 5 year old little girl playing outside in the summer. amazing. (: the picture really fits the song too lol
I see this as a good song to listen to after a breakup ...
am i crying? i think i'm crying. i love this song so much. so amazing.
Can you guys quit all the juvenile discussion over chord progressions?
Even "Baby for pree" and "where youll find me now" have similar chord progressions now what? whos cooler(both being NMH compositions).
On another note :
NMH's way cooler than bush yeah;)
Same chords as a LOT of major pop songs. Just in a different key. Go search up "Four Chords Axis of Awesome". This is a four chord song. It's still pretty damn amazing.
its alittle slower also!
@ZombieInvasion5446 Music has a tendency to repeat and copy itself,
sometimes intentionally sometimes accidentally.
The differences between punk and classical are very few.
Thats weird that "My Dream Girl Don't Exist" has the same chord progression as "When I Come Around" by Greenday, "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" has the same one as "Monster Mash" by Bobby Boris Picket, and "Bucket" has the same as "Glycerine" by Bush, NMH does them the best though
Shit, this is way better quality than the demo my friend gave to me. I mean it's the same version and everything, this one is just much clearer (the demo I have is really staticy).
I like the organ version of this song much better
Bush didn't invent this chord progression. These chords have been used in countless songs; just look at the "4 Chords, 36 Songs" video. "Let it Be," "Don't Stop Believing," "No Woman No Cry," and lots of other songs with the same chords preceded both this song and "Glycerine."
It doesn't matter if Glycerine was written before this.
This was written before Glycerine though.
This song was on a demo tape called "Beauty" that Neutral Milk Hotel put out in 1992. Glycerine is from the album "Sixteen Stone" which came out in 1994.
oh ok. I guess maybe I missed or forgot that part. thanks for the reply.
I dont recall hearing about him saying that. Weird. Where did you hear he said that?
I love this song. I do prefer the organ version, though. check that out if you havent yet.
its fuckin glycerine what came out first im gussint this
Same chords as "Glycerine," but a MUCH cooler song :)
